About the Author
Pat Swenson holds a Master of Fine Arts Degree in Creative Writing from Goddard College and a Master's Degree in English from California State University, Northridge (CSUN) where she currently teaches English and Humanities. During her 20-year tenure at CSUN, she has developed and maintained a comprehensive website providing online resources for K-12 educators. She also served as both webmaster for the Humanities Program and as faculty representative on the Educational Technology Committee. Her efforts on the Committee culminated in securing online course offerings in the English Department. The recipient of numerous educational grants, she coordinated and evaluated key pilot programs to advance the implementation of online curricula.
Nancy A. Taylor holds a Master's Degree in English Literature from California State University, Northridge (CSUN) where she currently teaches English and Humanities. For the past 15 years, she has taught traditional and online courses and has served on the English Department Educational Technology Committee. She has been awarded numerous educational grants related to the integration or improvement of online technology as it relates to learning and curriculum, including the development, implementation, and evaluation of pilot programs and expanding the functionality and applicability of educational websites. She has also served as a webmaster for the Humanities Program.

Information filled gem of a book!

What a great resource Online Teaching in the Digital Age is for teachers. Some people may be put off at the high price for such a small book. Don't be. In a life filled to capacity with information it was a pleasure to be able to find what I needed quickly and easily in it. Besides, the price is dictated by the publishing industry, not the authors. Online Teaching is an excellent resource for current and future online teachers.
The format and concision of this excellent book allows readers to go directly to areas of interest, such as "Choosing Course Features and Learning Tools" or "Moderating a Chat Discussion." With detailed explanations, examples, and computer screen shots, this book covers every aspect of an online course from planning, teaching, and troubleshooting to post-semester review. I found the sample syllabi in the Appendix especially helpful.

This is a useful "how to" guide bringing together up-to-date best practices information. The book can provide new perspectives and tips for even veteran instructors. I have learned a number of new techniques. Recommended.

The Future of Teaching

Pat Swensen and Nancy Taylor's Online Teaching in the Digital Age is a wonderful addition to the 21th century teacher's toolbox. As more and more universities and colleges realize the advantages of both real-time and asynchronous classrooms for their students, more instructors will need a map to this new way of reaching students. This practical and very user-friendly book offers a way to answer the many questions those of us who already teach, or who will teach in the future, on-line courses. It will settle our nerves and give us courage to just do it. I highly recommend this book for all teachers in all disciplines. The appendices with sample syllabi and schedules are worth the cover price alone!
