About the Author
David Aldstadt received his Ph.D. from The Ohio State University in 2002. His specialty areas are French cinema, modern French culture and literature, and language teaching. He is currently an assistant professor of French at Southern Methodist University, where he teaches courses in French language, literature, culture, and film. He recently received a University Research Council grant to fund research at the Marcel Carne archives at the French Library in Boston.
Jean-Louis Hippolyte received a Ph.D. from the University of Colorado in 1998, and he is currently an Assistant Professor of French at Rutgers University (Camden). His area of specialization is Twentieth-Century French Literature, with a focus on the extreme contemporary. His teaching interests include French language and culture, contemporary literature and criticism, and French cinema. He is currently working on a book on the topic of uncertainty in literature entitled Fuzzy Fiction.

Great textbook!

I, too, disagree with the student who gave the negative feedback below. This text gives a concise account of French history and culture, and shows how individual eras are reflected in the cinema of the time. I found it to be a very interesting way to teach French culture. My students loved the book as well as the variety of films that are included in the course (i.e. avant garde, Nouvelle vague, women's cinema, Francophone cinema). Particularly useful is the layout of the text, which allows the professor to choose between two films for each chapter, depending on his/her knowledge and the direction of the individual class. The exercises in the book are very well-suited for the intermediate French student, allowing him/her to practice the language in spoken and written form. This is one of the best textbooks I have used, and I will use it again!

Great Textbook!

This is one of the most complete textbooks about the history of French cinema that I've ever used in my classes. Yes, the book is not a hardback (which makes it lighter for my students to carry around) and yes there are "fill-in" type exercises, but these are great!
I disagree 100% with the previous reviewer. This book, although expensive, is absolutely great!

Way overpriced

It was enough of a sticker-shock to find out I had to pay $60 for a textbook from my Intro to French Cinema class because it was a new edition. So I bought, get it, open it up... and discover it is not a textbook at all, but a flimsy workbook. It's paperback, not even a half an inch thick, printed on low quality paper, and has all sorts of fill-in-the-blank activities. How can these people get off charging so much for a pathetically small, one-time use workbook that's not even well put together?
Professors-- you owe your students something more economical than this book!
