About the Author
Professor of English and Women's Studies at The Pennsylvania State University, Cheryl Glenn is widely known for her scholarship, leadership, and teaching. Besides authoring The Harbrace Guide to Writing and co-authoring The Harbrace Handbooks, she is author of the prize-winning Rhetoric Retold: Regendering the Tradition from Antiquity Through the Renaissance; Unspoken: A Rhetoric of Silence; Rhetorical Education in America; and several other titles. Glenn's rhetorical scholarship has earned her many awards, including three National Endowment for the Humanities awards, the Conference on College Composition and Communication's Richard Braddock Award, Rhetoric Review's Outstanding Essay Award, and Best Book/Honorable Mention from the Society for the Study of Early Modern Women. She has served as President of the Coalition of Women Scholars in the History of Rhetoric and Composition, and is a member of the Conference on College Composition and Communication (CCCC) Executive Committee, Chair of the Modern Language Association (MLA) Division on the History and Theory of Rhetoric and Composition, and a member of the MLA Delegate Assembly. Glenn's teaching and scholarship have earned her three university teaching awards. She has recently served as Chair of the Conference on College Composition and Communication, the largest organization of writing and rhetoric teachers in the world.

Professor of English at Central Washington University, Loretta Gray has three degrees related to her interest in composition and applied linguistics: Master of Arts in Teaching English as a Second Language (School for International Training), Master of Arts in Spanish (Middlebury College), and Doctor of Philosophy in Applied Linguistics (Boston University). She has experience teaching English to non-native speakers in Mexico, Spain, and the United States. In addition, she taught Spanish at Clemson University and applied linguistics at the School for International Training. Dr. Gray has been teaching composition and applied linguistics courses at Central Washington University in Ellensburg, Washington, since 1992. She also is co-author of the textbook Rhetorical Grammar.

All I need to make the change

All I needed to change my name in California was in this book, all my questions were answered and it's even a fun book to read. Well written and informative, my name change proceeding went smooth and easy. If only they would stop hiking up the price to change your name. Geez!!! Just make sure you always buy the latest edition of the book incase any laws change. But definitely buy this book if you're going to change your name.

Having used NOLO PRESS books over the years, this one is no different. It is a great help, and great for the lay person who wants to legally change their name. I highly recommend it. It is easy to read and understand. You do not need to hire an attorney. Get this book, read it, follow it, and do it yourself! Highly recommend! The price is more than worth it! (Call the County Clerk in your county to ask how long the process takes, just so you know, especially if you have any time problems, such as upcoming marriage, etc.).

Pretty good, needs some updating

This guide was used by my wife to change her name. The book overall is quite useful, however there are some challenges and I will attempt to delineate them below.

Pros:
- Gives a decent step by step process for you to navigate through the requirements to change your name in CA.
- Shows the forms and sites necessary.
- Attempts to let you know what to expect.

Cons:
- Several areas are vague. Not sure if this is due to differences in various counties, or what, however there are areas, such as dealing with the newspaper requirements, dealing with the clerks that could use some further detail to be completely helpful.
- Attempts to capture all possibilities, yet falls a bit short overall. Obviously not every situation will apply to every person, yet this book makes it challenging to determine which situations apply to your specific case and which do not.

Overall this was a heplful tool, certainly not perfect, contains some challenges to overcome. I suppose the bottom line is could we have done without the book? I think the answer is 'probably' in our specific case.

About the Author
Born in Belgium, the daughter of an American minister, Jo Ray McCuen-Metherell had moved from Brussels to Paris to Bern, Switzerland, by the time she was seven years old. In Bern, she attended the Freies Gymnasium and spoke not only fluent French and German but also English, which was the language spoken to her by her American parents. After enduring World War II, Jo Ray's parents sent her and her brother to Pacific Union College (in the Napa Valley), where Jo Ray received a B. A. in English. After teaching English and French in high school for several years, Jo Ray started to take night classes at the University of Southern California in order to earn an M.A. and Ph.D., which would allow her to teach in college. While working on her doctorate, she was first hired to teach English at Glendale Community College and later to serve as Dean of the Evening College. A chance meeting in 1973 with Anthony C. Winkler, a successful novelist, led to a literary partnership that has produced 15 coauthored textbooks used at colleges and universities across the United States.

Born in Kingston, Jamaica West Indies, Anthony C. Winkler was educated in Jamaica at Excelsior College, Mount Alvernia Academy, and Cornwall College, the last two being in Montego Bay. He was also educated at Citrus Community College, Glendora, California. Winkler taught briefly at Pasadena City College and for a year at Moneague Teachers College in Saint Anne, Jamaica, an experience chronicled in GOING HOME TO TEACH (1995). From 1968 to 1975 Winkler had sales territories as a bookman for Appleton Century Crofts textbook publishers, and later for Scott, Foresman. In 1969 he decided he could write textbooks as well as anyone and through a chance meeting with the sales representative of another company, he submitted the manuscript POETRY AS SYSTEM and was offered a contract for its publication. Eventually, he met Jo Ray McCuen-Metherell and the two became textbook writers and collaborators. Over the years they have produced more than a dozen textbooks, most on rhetoric and writing. In addition to Winkler's textbooks, his body of work includes, among other books: THE PAINTED CANOE (novel, 1983); THE LUNATIC (novel, 1987); THE GREAT YACHT RACE (novel, 1992); DOG WAR (novel, 2006); TRUST THE DARKNESS: MY LIFE AS A WRITER (autobiography, 2008); THE BURGLARY (play, premiered in Toronto in 2005); THE LUNATIC (movie, filmed in 1991); THE ANNIHILATION OF FISH (movie, 1999); and BOB MARLEY, AN INTIMATE PORTRAIT BY HIS MOTHER (biography, 1996, with Cedella Booker).

About the Author
Julie Newman, Ph.D., has worked in the field of sustainable development and campus sustainability since 1993. In 2004, Julie was recruited to be the founding Director of the Office of Sustainability for Yale University. At Yale, Julie also holds a lecturer appointment with the Yale School of Forestry and Environmental Studies where she teaches an undergraduate course entitled – Sustainability: From theory to practice in institutions. In 1997, Julie assisted with the establishment of the longest-standing sustainability office in the country at the University of New Hampshire, Office of Sustainability Programs (OSP). Prior to her work with the OSP she worked for University Leaders for a Sustainable Future (ULSF) overseeing the development of the Environmental Literacy Institute. In addition to her work on campus, Julie has taken a leadership role in bringing together peer institutions both regionally and internationally. In 2004 Julie co-founded the Northeast Campus Sustainability Consortium established to advance education and action for sustainable development on university campuses in the northeast and maritime region. She also co-coordinates a sustainability working group of the International Alliance of Research Universities [IARU] as well as a Sustainability Working Group for the Council of Ivy Presidents. Julie has worked internationally on issues of sustainable development as a Peace Corps volunteer in Guatemala and subsequently collaborating and consulting with universities in Europe, China, Japan and Australia. Her research has focused on the role of decision-making processes and organizational behavior in institutionalizing sustainability into higher education. Julie lectures and consults for universities both nationally and internationally, participates on a variety of boards and advisory committees and has contributed to a series of edited books and peer reviewed journals. Julie holds a BS in Natural Resource Policy and Management from the University of Michigan; an MS in Environmental Policy and Biology from Tufts University; and a Ph.D. in Natural Resources and Environmental Studies from the University of New Hampshire.

William N. Bender began his career by teaching eighth- and ninth-grade students in the public schools. He worked in higher education for 28 years and published over 60 research articles and 24 books in education. He specializes in instructional strategies for all students and is recognized as a national leader on instructional tactics, response to intervention, and differentiated instruction. Dr. Bender believes his job is to inform audiences across the nation of innovative, up to date information, based on current applied research. Dr. Bender received his Ph.D. in Special Education from the University of North Carolina and currently consults with schools and districts in the United States and Canada.

Karla Reiss is the award winning author of Leadership Coaching for Educators; Bringing Out the Best in School Administrators. She founded The Change Place, LLC in 2004, a coaching and consulting firm dedicated to the continuous improvement of individuals, teams and organizations after 30 years in education, publishing and sales. She and her team of certified coaches offer several levels of coaching training programs to leaders of school systems, government and non-profit organizations, businesses and individuals who wish to learn a coaching style of leadership, including Powerful Coaching for Powerful Results™ certification program, CKEY; Coaching Kids, Empowering Youth™ and various related programs. The Change Place, LLC also provides executive and leadership coaching services, workplace and leadership assessments and products that support others to lead professional and personal change. She is also a frequent speaker at national, state and local conferences.

As a school administrator, Reiss worked with more than 50 school districts in a variety of school improvement roles, the majority as coordinator of professional development at Western Suffolk (NY) Board of Cooperative Education Services. She has conducted numerous professional development programs and school improvement opportunities for K-12 staff and district leaders. She is certified in strategic planning and served on the New York State Education Department’s statewide steering committee for Comprehensive District Education Planning. She was president of New York State Staff Development Council and served on the Executive Board of the Long Island Association for Curriculum and Staff Development.

Karla Reiss is a graduate from the Institute of Professional Excellence in Coaching in 2002 and received additional coach training at the College of Executive Coaching. She holds a bachelor of science degree, a master’s degree in special education and a professional diploma in school district administration. Her professional and personal inspiration and transition into the world of coaching was a result of the invitation to participate in Oxygen TV’s program, The Life Makeover Project in 2002. She has applied all of the coaching techniques and strategies described in this book to her own life and now helps others courageously transition their lives, leadership style and organizations to fulfill their goals, hopes and dreams.

Consider other coaching books

I ordered this book along with other coaching books and was so disappointed reading the first chapter I am opting to not read any more. It infers the leader has no qualities to address instead implies the employee/s are in need of possible coaching....from a disqualified leader? The "coaching" questions were leading and posed could insight defensive responses, ie: "What makes you think that?" What kind of a dream world are you living in when business is filled with hidden adgendas, layoffs, and decreasing benefits? Pg.21"Keep in mind assumptions are usually hidden and people will likely reveal them to their supervisor or leader only when the relationship supports honest, open communication without repercussion. " How many people are working under the fear tactic (another book to avoid, What I didn't learn in Harvard Business School) witnessed multiple employees who have been fired without change in leadership? A better book to write is coaching for the actual leaders to sort out the employee turnover, the waste of human resources and more importantly the cost to the human spirit.

Thorough and Concise

During the course of a French business class, we used this book as the central text. After that semester, I was sincerely impressed by the cogent and clear explanation given by Berg in this book. It is divided into sections (modules) that facilitate comprehension both at the undegaduate and graduate levels. It is easily divisible, providing lenency concerning curriculum planning and course structure. Perhaps the most striking of Parlons Affaires! is format; it was designed as a prepatory text for the Diplome de francais d'affaires (DFA) administered by the Chamber of Commernce and Industry of Paris (CCIP). In this fashion, the book is indispensable for 1) an introduction into the french business world and lexicon; 2) those who wish to prepare for the DFA; 3) any person desiring a better understanding of french business operations. Finally, I recommend, without reservation, this text. Choose it and you will not be disappointed! Il vaut la peine!

I used this book in my business French class and I thought that is was a good choice for people with notions of basic French.
It covers the business vocabulary through texts and exercises. That for me was the most helpful part as it gave me a quick overview of the business vocabulary. I was able to incorpate this into my knowledge of French and fake my way through business conversations.
It also gives readers an overview of French traditions, habits, and other quirks, which is both amusing and informative :-)

About the Author

Kate Kennedy develops and leads professional development workshops for educators on how to use value-added analysis, formative assessment, and other research-based strategies and tools for school improvement. A Director at Battelle for Kids in Columbus, Ohio, she also develops online learning resources to support educators’ efforts to apply these strategies to accelerate student progress. Kate has traveled from Ohio to Hong Kong, and many interesting places in between, to help educators help kids.

Before joining the staff at Battelle for Kids, Kate studied education leadership at Teachers College in New York City and was an ESL, English Language Arts, and Social Studies teacher in the Los Angeles Unified School District.
