About the Author
Stewart writes and edits books on landlord-tenant law, real estate, and other consumer issues. She is the co-author of First-Time Landlord, Nolo's Essential Guide to Buying Your First Home, Every Landlord's Legal Guide, Every Tenant's Legal Guide, Leases and Rental Agreements, and Renters' Rights.
As Nolo's managing editor, Portman oversees editorial work on all Nolo books. She specializes in residential and commercial landlord/tenant law, legal issues related to courts, landlords and tenants, and neighbor disputes. She is the author or co-author of Every Landlord's Legal Guide, Every Landlord's Guide to Finding Great Tenants, Every Tenant's Legal Guide, Renters' Rights, Negotiate the Best Lease for Your Business, Leases & Rental Agreements, The California Landlord's Law Book and California Tenants' Rights. Portman received undergraduate and graduate degrees from Stanford University and a law degree from Santa Clara University. Before joining Nolo in 1994, she practiced law as a public defender.

Very helpful for Renters

She covers everything in this book. Tells you where to find more info for your state. One or two topics were a little too brief but not important areas. A good book to familiarize you with renter pitfalls. We had a bad experience which caused me to but this. Very helpful, indeed. I recommend buying it before you ever have a problem for landlords will try to circumvent the law and this pretty well ruins such attempts. She urges good caution as well. Sensible advice. Get it today so you don't get taken or ripped off with a bad lease term. Know your rights or you won't have any.

I found this book to pretty much be a waste. Everything was very general. You pretty much need to get a state specific book to get what you want to know.

A good reference tool

Renter's Rights was a great book to read before going to see apartments. I was able to formulate questions and anticipate problems that could arise. The leasing agent was impressed with how prepared I was with such detailed questions. She could tell I had done my homework. This is a great reference for before and after renting an apartment. A thorough reading is not necessary, merely glancing will still provide you with a lot of helpful information.
Be prepared! Read this first.
