About the Author
Gail Dines is a professor of sociology and women’s studies at Wheelock College in Boston, where she is also chair of the American studies department. She has been researching and writing about the pornography industry for over twenty years. She has written numerous articles on pornography, media images of women, and representations of race in pop culture. Her latest book is PORNLAND: How Pornography has Hijacked our Sexuality. She is a cofounder of the activist group Stop Porn Culture!

Clint C. Wilson II, EdD is professor of Journalism at the Howard University School of Communications and graduate professor in its Graduate School of Arts and Sciences. A recipient of the Honor Medal for Distinguished Service in Journalism from the University of Missouri, Wilson has published scholarly work on the relationship between people of color and mainstream general circulation media in Journalism Educator, Columbia Journalism Review, Quill, and Change. About the Author

Beverley Holden Johns brings her 35 years of experience working with students with learning disabilities (LD) and/or behavioral disorders (EBD) within the public schools to her current post as learning and behavior consultant and an adjunct instructor for MacMurray College, where she teaches the course on special education law, adaptations for the general education classroom, and EBD.

Johns is the lead author of ten books (and co-author of another) including Reduction of School Violence: Alternatives to Suspension, Techniques for Managing Verbally and Physically Aggressive Students, Surviving Internal Politics Within the School, Safe Schools, Teacher’s Reflective Calendar and Planning Journal, Effective Curriculum and Instruction for Students with Emotional/Behavioral Disorders, Students with Disabilities and General Education: A Desktop Reference for School Personnel, Getting Behavioral Interventions Right, Preparing Test-Resistant Students for Assessments: A Staff Training Guide, The Ethical Educator, and Motivating the Unmotivated Student. She has written a workbook to accompany a video for paraprofessionals entitled The Paraprofessional’s Guide to Managing Student Behavior and over 40 articles. She is co-author with Janet Lerner of the seminal college LD textbook, the 11th edition of Learning Disabilities and Related Mild Disabilities, and they are currently working on a college textbook on Students with Special Needs in General Education: Practical Adaptations and Teaching Strategies.

She is the 2000 recipient of the CEC Outstanding Leadership Award from the International Council for Exceptional Children, Past International President (and current board member) of the Council for Children with Behavioral Disorders, and the 2007 Recipient of the Romaine P. Mackie Leadership Service Award. Johns is listed in Who’s Who in America, Who’s Who of American Women, Who’s Who in American Education and Who’s Who Among America’s Teachers.

Bob Algozzine is a professor in the Department of Educational Leadership at the University of North Carolina and project codirector of the U.S. Department of Education-supported Behavior and Reading Improvement Center. With 25 years of research experience and extensive firsthand knowledge of teaching students classified as seriously emotionally disturbed, Algozzine is a uniquely qualified staff developer, conference speaker, and teacher of behavior management and effective teaching courses. He is active in special education practice as a partner and collaborator with professionals in the Charlotte-Mecklenburg schools in North Carolina and as an editor of several journals focused on special education. Algozzine has written more than 250 manuscripts on special education topics, including many books and textbooks on how to manage emotional and social behavior problems.

Mara Sapon-Shevin is Professor of Inclusive Education in the Teaching and Leadership Department of the School of Education at Syracuse University. She teaches in the University’s Inclusive Elementary and Special Education Teacher Education Program that prepares teachers for inclusive, heterogeneous classrooms. She frequently consults with districts that are attempting to move towards more inclusive schools and respond more positively to student diversity, providing workshops and support for teachers, students, parents and administrators.

Mara presents frequently on inclusive education, cooperative learning, social justice education, differentiated instruction, friendship, community building, school reform, and teaching for diversity. She works with other educators and community members to design workshops and learning experiences to help participants build relationships across ethnic and racial groups and collaborate for friendship and peaceful co-existence. Mara can often be found leading conference groups in community building, singing and dancing.

The author of over 150 books, book chapters and articles, Mara is also the co-author of a seven session curriculum entitled, “Endracism/Endinjustice: Challenging Oppression, Building Allies” designed for high school and college students. She is the co-producer of a DVD entitled “and nobody said anything: Uncomfortable Conversations about Diversity” that explores critical teaching incidents on social justice for faculty in colleges and universities. Her most recent book is Widening the Circle: The Power of Inclusive Classrooms (Boston: Beacon Press, 2007).

Geoff Colvin draws on his experience as a classroom teacher and administrator, researcher at the University of Oregon, and national public school consultant. Recognized as a national expert on the subjects of school safety and violence prevention, Colvin has provided inservice training for teachers and administrators in more than 100 school districts and agencies nationally and internationally. He recently served as research associate at the University of Oregon and independent consultant in the areas of schoolwide discipline, school climate, school safety, and violence prevention, and has also directed a juvenile detention school and a program for seriously emotionally disturbed youth. Colvin has authored more than sixty publications, books, book chapters, journal articles, and video programs on the subject of teaching and managing students with problem behavior.

Dieter Sevin, a native of Germany, was Professor of German at Vanderbilt University. He received grants from organizations such as the American Philosophical Association, American Council of Learned Societies, German Academic Exchange Service, and the Vanderbilt Research Council.

Ingrid Sevin, a native of Germany, has been teaching German and French at the high school and college level in the United States and in Germany for more than ten years. From 1987 to 2002, she was the editor of the German audio-magazine SCHAU INS LAND.

If you're purchasing this for a class...

WAIT until the class begins. I bought this book via Amazon a few weeks before my courses began. Once I received the syllabus, I was told that I had to have a shrink-wrapped version that includes a "key-code". This is for accesing an online workbook and other accompanying material-which my professor does use/grade.

I ended up purchasing another copy of this book (for $200) from the bookstore, with the key code. So I've spent $300+ on two books and one key-code...now I have an extra German book. I'm hesitant to sell it too, 'cause I don't want to put someone in the same position I was in.

The site that uses the key-code and provides the online material (Quia) is not very clear on what you need to purchase if you have the book already...if it even sells that. I e-mailed them, and it's equally vague. Most of my classmates and I who were in this situation just avoided the headache by buying from the bookstore instead of trying the online site. Of those who did buy from the site, most ended up purchasing the wrong package, and getting either another book anyway or only part of the online sections, for more money.

I've also done some searching, and have found this to be a problem with many students, in many language courses. (I guess the bookstores aren't done figuring out how to put us father in debt...joy...)

So my advice:
Save your money and talk to your professor before purchasing from a non-academic site. Or just eat the cost and use the bookstore. $200 is a LOT cheaper than $300+.

It is a good book, though. (Which is why it's received 3 stars.) The info seems practical and handy. :-)

Just don't let 'em screw over any more students!

Cyndi Banks is a professor of criminology and criminal justice and Dean of University College at Northern Arizona University. She has more than 24 years experience of research and project implementation in developing countries in the fields of juvenile justice, probation, justice policy, and child rights. She has worked as a criminologist in Papua New Guinea, Bangladesh, Iraq, Kurdistan, Timor Leste, Sudan, and Myanmar. She is the author of numerous articles and books, including Criminal Justice Ethics; Youth, Crime and Justice; Developing Cultural Criminology: Theory and Practice in Papua New Guinea; and Alaska Native Juveniles in Detention.

Very helpful for Renters

She covers everything in this book. Tells you where to find more info for your state. One or two topics were a little too brief but not important areas. A good book to familiarize you with renter pitfalls. We had a bad experience which caused me to but this. Very helpful, indeed. I recommend buying it before you ever have a problem for landlords will try to circumvent the law and this pretty well ruins such attempts. She urges good caution as well. Sensible advice. Get it today so you don't get taken or ripped off with a bad lease term. Know your rights or you won't have any.

A good reference tool

Renter's Rights was a great book to read before going to see apartments. I was able to formulate questions and anticipate problems that could arise. The leasing agent was impressed with how prepared I was with such detailed questions. She could tell I had done my homework. This is a great reference for before and after renting an apartment. A thorough reading is not necessary, merely glancing will still provide you with a lot of helpful information.

Be prepared! Read this first.

All the Info You Need!

I had a bought and borrowed a few for-sale-by owner books in order to help me sell my spec houses, but was always very disappointed with how and general and vague they were. This book, however, told me all the info I needed in a very easy-to- follow, step-by-step format. I really feel like I totally understand the process now, thanks to this book. If you follow all the advice and suggestions, you will definitely save thousands on realtor fees.

Did what it was supposed to do

I sold my house in San Francisco without a broker (my first house sale). The buyer actually drew up the sales contract but this book helped me understand who should pay for what fees.

The only thing that this book lacked that could have gotten me in trouble was that it failed to mention a San Francisco-specific report called the 3R report (the City issues it to list all permits that it has issued for the property). Fortunately I had a friend who was a realtor who checked to make sure I had all the forms.

Good reference book..a bit on the thin side though

This NOLO book is intended for home owners in California who wish to sell their home on their own and would like a valuable resource to wade through the many variables in order to reach this goal.

This book contains 13 chapters with a little over 200 pages. Each chapter is divided logically covering an important aspect of house selling such as "Offers, Counteroffers, and Negotiations(chp10)" or "What If Something Goes Wrong During Escrow?(chp12)".

There's also an included CD with all the important forms such as "Deposit Receipt" and "Form Title". Overall I found the info in this book to be helpful and I did reference it quite a bit when I was in a rough spot.

The problem I had is not with what is in the book, but it is with what is not in the book. More often than not, I would run into a section that would ask me to read another reference book for more info or to consult such and such to get more details.

While I understand that there isn't a book that can contain all needed information, I found that this NOLO book did this more often than not(compared to other NOLO titles). And overall the book is a bit on the thin side.

So overall I would say yes, this book contains helpful info and would be useful to anyone in California looking to sell their home on their own; but it seems a bit limited and more often than not you might find yourself reaching for another reference.

About the Author
Raquel Maria Halty (Ph.D., Harvard University), a native of Uruguay, has lived extensively in Uruguay, France and the USA. Professor Halty has been a member of the Simmons College faculty for many years, prior to which she was a member of the faculty at Northeastern University and Tufts University. She teaches language courses, as well as a variety of advanced courses in literature and civilization. She is currently teaching several courses ranging from an introduction to Latin American literature, to contemporary fiction and cultural history. She is particularly interested in the relationship between politics and art in Latin America, as well as the works of women writers. She serves as Director of the Graduate Program in Spanish and Director of the Simmons in Cordoba Program, which she founded, and has been a member of the International Relations Program Steering Committee since its inception. She has also been instrumental in establishing the Short-Term-Courses Abroad program. She is a member of the Board and Executive Committee of the International Institute in Spain, a Massachusetts Charitable Corporation.

Angela Labarca (Ph.D., Ohio State University), a native of Chile, is Professor of Spanish and Director of the Spanish LBAT program in Madrid and the intermediate program in Valencia. She has published several articles and chapters in volumes on the psycholinguistics of second language reading and testing, and has co-edited two books on second language acquisition. She has also written or co-authored more than 18 textbooks for the teaching of Spanish and English at all levels as well as standardized Rasch-analyzed language tests. In a career spanning 34 years of college teaching in four major universities, she has taught all language levels, including Scientific, Business and Medical Spanish and English. She has also taught numerous graduate courses on language acquisition research and testing, has directed dissertations and a research program, and trained instructors and TAs. She is very active on the international level and has taught at the Universities of Rome, Seville and Sofia, and trained instructors in Argentina, Bulgaria, Germany, and Italy. In the U.S., she is a technical translator and language and culture consultant to the profession, universities and corporations.

About the Author
Guerin, an editor/author specializing in employment law, is author or co-author of several Nolo books, including The Manager's Legal Handbook, Dealing with Problem Employees, Nolo's Essential Guide to Federal Employment Laws, Workplace Investigations, Create Your Own Employee Handbook, and Nolo's Guide to California Law. Guerin has practiced employment law in government, public interest, and private practice where she represented clients at all levels of state and federal courts and in agency proceedings. She is a graduate of Boalt Hall School of Law at the University of California at Berkeley.

Richard Stim specializes in small business, copyright, patents, and trademark issues at Nolo. He practices law in San Francisco and has represented photographers, software developers, crafts people, publishers, musicians, and toy designers. He is the author of many books, including Music Law, and Profit From Your Idea. Stim also produces audiobooks, and performs and records with two bands.

Decent Starter Book

This book provides a broad overview of things to consider when starting your own business. The title refers to beginning a "side" business, presuming that you still have another primary source of income which is perhaps why it does not seem very detailed. Since I have a business background, much of this book seemed very simplistic to me, but for the person lacking a business background who wants to start his or her own business, it does provide a good set of things that a person would need to know before getting started.

That said, if you are really serious then you will need more than this book. You may need to consult professionals in the financial or legal realm, and also do more research because what you find in this book is pretty much just the basic groundwork stuff without a whole lot of details. For example, in the section on accounting, there is a very brief explanation of a balance sheet and income statement, not enough to really provide enough information to a person who is not familiar with these concepts. If you are talking about doing a side business that remains pretty small then maybe that is okay but if you are planning on starting something that may eventually become your primary source of income, then you are going to have to get more in-depth information in pretty much all of the areas covered by this book.

For someone thinking about starting that side business, this book would be helpful. I have read other Nolo publications and in my opinion this seems to be one of the weaker ones. Most of the others have been excellent and I can't say that about this book. It's good, but like I said, very basic.

OK for initial motivation; not enough info to really start

If you're toying with the idea to pad your income with a side job, this book is a decent start. It gives you some suggestions about what to do, links to further resources (often other Nolo books), and some good tips on topics as diverse as marketing or how to deal with various types of business people, including lawyers. I went through the book easily and found it well- written and understandable.

However, it is when I tried to get some hard info out of it that I ran into trouble. For example, the one website that was recommended for doing little IT jobs on the side turned out to be a depressing place where people desperately bid for jobs for extremely little money ("$12 if you configure my email software"). Also, the tax chapter didn't seem to really belong: I had to read it multiple times and still couldn't figure out whether I'd have to pay self- employment tax as a day trader or be subject to schedule C, etc...

In summary, it's a decent book to develop some ideas and learn some basic terms. Anything more factual, Google has been more educational for me so far.

Marketing and advertising. Doing business online, driving traffic to your site and using a site like PayPal to get paid online.
Managing your money, including record keeping and bookkeeping, getting loans, collecting accounts, taxes and deductions.
Protecting your personal assets including limiting liability, insurance and risk reduction.
Drafting contracts, protecting business ideas and ways to save on legal fees.
Licenses, permits, registering a business name and trademarks.
Tips on working from home, hiring employees and independent contractors.
