About the Author
Dennis Sargent was the Director of the Small Business Development Center at Linn-Benton Community College in Albany, Oregon. He has advised over a thousand small business owners and taught numerous seminars. Dennis is the author of Your Business Plan, published by the Oregon Network of Small Business Development Centers, now in its fifth edition, with nationwide sales of over 100,000 copies. He is also a lead author of NxLevel: A Guide for Entrepreneurs. Recently, Dennis was part of a team that wrote a business planning book for use by the Oregon Native American Business and Entrepreneurial Network (ONABEN). Dennis is a Certified Public Accountant and earned his Masters of Science in Business at Oregon State University.
Martha Sargent is a retired Associate Professor of Business at Western Oregon University. She designed, initiated and taught in the Entrepreneurship program at the university. Martha is the primary author of the Instructor's Guide to Your Business Plan, published and distributed by the Oregon Network of Small Business Development Centers. She is a lead author of NxLevel: A Guide for Entrepreneurs, business training materials published by the Western Entrepreneurial Network, used throughout the United States. In 2004, Martha received the university's Excellence in Teaching Award. Martha is a Certified Public Accountant and former Certified Management Accountant, and received her MBA from Oregon State University.

Very Basic Introduction

This is a great introductory book. It is far too basic for anyone who has been involved in the high-level management of a company during their career.
Step One is "Focus on yourself". 46 pages help you look at "what you want to do in retirement, what you value in life, where you want to live." A fascinating look at yourself to see if you even want a business or if other things are more important to you at your particular stage of life.
Step Two is "Inventory your resources". 56 pages examine your "skills, time, and money" available.
Step Three is "Generate great business ideas." 37 pages "show you lots of ways to find exciting business ideas." This part of the book was more vague and not as helpful as I was expecting it to be.
Step Four is "Choose your best busines idea." 34 pages "walk you through a series of reality checks." Much more content should have been developed here.
Step Five is "Get ready to launch your business." 71 pages review the basics: "legal issues, how to finance your business and write a sound business plan, how to handle income taxes and find good health insurance." Very basic overview of these topics would be good for anyone who has never had exposure to the information at all.

Great resource for retirees

"Retire--and Start Your Own Business" is a very useful, practical resource
for retirees like me who are considering starting their own business. The book is full of examples, anecdotes and short, simple exercises to help the reader work through all the important considerations in starting a business. The authors walk the reader through a very logical process, using clear jargon-free language. I chose not to read the book cover-to-cover, but instead focused on the topics that were of the most interest to me. The book's layout made that very easy to do. The authors point the reader to many additional resources which I appreciated. I would recommend this book to friends and family without reservation!

Don't Pass This Book By!

Excellent, thorough book covering aspects of starting a business beyond writing a business plan.
This book is for anyone entrepreneurial, not just retiring folks; I wish I had it years ago.
I have worked as a consultant, and tried to start a business, and found myself limited by, and unable to find, pertinent information that I needed to be successful. For me that was the accounting and tax portions of the business, pre-internet it was hard to figure out, and expensive to hire an accountant. This book covers everything you need and more, as it takes you on a personal self exploratory journey.
It's good reading even if you don't start a business.
Highly recommended.
