About the Author

Dr. Sameer Hinduja is a professor in the School of Criminology and Criminal Justice at Florida Atlantic University and Co-Director of the Cyberbullying Research Center (www.cyberbullying.org). He is recognized internationally for his groundbreaking work on the subjects of cyberbullying and safe social networking, concerns that have paralleled the exponential growth in online communication by young people. Outside of research and evaluation expertise, Dr. Hinduja provides training to schools, youth organizations, parents, and teens on how to avoid online victimization and its real-world consequences. His interdisciplinary work is widely published and cited, and has been featured in numerous local, state, national, and international media outlets.



Justin W. Patchin, Ph.D., is a professor at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire. He received his Ph.D. from Michigan State University. His research explores the intersection of teens and technology, with particular focus on cyberbullying, online social networking, and sexting. He travels around the United States (and abroad) training educators, counselors, law enforcement officers, parents, and teens on how to prevent and respond to adolescent misuses of technology. Dr. Patchin is Co-Director of the Cyberbullying Research Center (www.cyberbullying.org) and has written six books and numerous articles on adolescent behaviors online. He has spoken at the White House and the FBI Academy, and has appeared on CNN, NPR, and in the New York Times to discuss issues related to teens' use and misuse of technology.

Important, timely, and accessible

*In the spirit of full disclosure, I was honored to have been asked by the authors to provide a small "breakout box" segment, providing insight into the Canadian initiatives being introduced by students who are working to raise awareness of cyberbullying. Truth be told, this is a book I would have gotten no matter what, as you'll see from my review*

I first became familiar with the topic of cyberbullying in doing research for my Masters thesis. In doing so, I referred often to the authors' first book Bullying Beyond the Schoolyard: Preventing and Responding to Cyberbullying. Reading it from cover to cover, I not only learned about cyberbullying in as comprehensible a fashion as possible, I also learned how to cope with incidents, as well as how to TEACH the subject. Then came Cyberbullying Prevention and Response: Expert Perspectives and once again, from the authors themselves as well as other experts, I learned even more about the topic, why it's important, and how to deal with the behavior.

Having graduated now, I am a Cyberbullying Educator, and more than ever, the topic is crucial to the well-being of our society. This book addresses the link between the school environment and cyberbullying/sexting. That is vital, because with the nature of cyberbullying (more often than not, taking place off school grounds, and not during school hours), many educators ask, "why is this my problem? Why is this an educational problem?" "School Climate 2.0" answers those questions, and more. The book provides educators with the needed questions they should be asking of themselves, their schools, and their students. Many educators - already overtasked with curricular responsibilities - may feel the challenge of recognizing cyberbullying and its effects a daunting one. There's no question it is. But Drs. Hinduja and Patchin address those concerns with clear, organized, and research-based chapters that include concrete examples, actual cases, illustrations of the behaviors being discussed and practical steps to take to prevent, respond, and understand what is going on with youth and technology-based communication.

The book delves deeply into adolescent behavior, providing valuable insight into how kids are using technology and how technology is abused. So often, I hear asked (or am asked myself), "why is cyberbullying such a problem today? What is different?" The authors answer those questions in such sections as "Why do teens engage in sexting?" and "whom do targets tell about their experiences with cyberbullying?"

Besides practical information, this book thoroughly deals with the rights of the school and personnel on a legal, and ethical level. With laws being tabled that are designed to prevent bullying and cyberbullying, this aspect of the field is in the spotlight. With jargon-free chapters, the authors walk us through effective prevention, responses, and policies every educational institution should know and uphold.

Many reference books are useful only when needed, i.e. keep it on the shelf and refer to it when you need to know about some specific aspect of your topic. This one - as with its predecessors - is a book one can read, all the way through, and come out at the other end knowing there has been a profound knowledge base achieved. The writing is accessible, the information is imperative for every stakeholder, and the beneficiaries are our children because we are better armed with knowledge on how to best help them when cyberbullying becomes a problem; as you'll learn from this book, and its predecessors, cyberbullying is likely to become a problem for mostly every kid at some point. If it is their problem, it is ours. And it is our responsibility to know how to be there for them with the appropriate answers when we're needed.

I recommend this book to everyone - parents, educators (from the support staff, to teachers, principals and guidance counselors), and students. In fact, anyone who cares about the future of our society, who recognizes that technology is here to stay but must be re-examined in terms of how it can be misused, must read "School Climate 2.0"

An important resource for educators and parents

Hinduja’s and Patchin’s School Climate 2.0 covers two very recent and troubling trends amongst teenagers, cyberbullying and sexting. The authors begin with an overview of both concepts, and each is defined thoroughly, yet the definitions are easy to comprehend and digest. In addition, the text is full of many real life examples, ripped from the headlines, of cyberbullying and sexting incidents that have gone viral and led to serious problems including school shootings, and teen suicide. Hinduja and Patchin showcase empirical research that demonstrates the real frequency of cyberbullying and sexting; perhaps not surprisingly, neither are as a common as media distortions would have us believe. Yet, the authors assert that both are serious problems with very real psychological damage and fallout to be experienced by victims and tormentors alike. The authors use these revelations as a springboard for the discussion of a framework that educators can utilize to improve their school climate and strengthen it against cyberbullying and sexting. However, the book isn’t just for educators. It is filled with countless practical tips, suggestions and prevention strategies that parents should find beneficial as well. The only obvious downfall with a book of this nature is the change of technology. For instance, the book was published in 2012, and contains no reference to SnapChat. SnapChat, in particular, poses a serious problem. While Hinduja and Patchin stress that teens are likely to dismiss the problems of sexting due to lack of forethought, SnapChat seemingly feeds this by enabling photos to be deleted instantly. Of course, the Internet being the Internet, nothing is completely deleted. However, programs like SnapChat are likely to lure teens in to an even greater sense of false security about sexting behaviors. Thus, a separate discourse on untangling the specific logic behind SnapChat based sexting might be a nice addition to a future version of the text. Otherwise, the text is a through and concise overview of cyberbullying and sexting with emphasis on prevention and response.

To say that the book School Climate 2.0, by Dr. Hinduja and Dr. Patchin is phenomenal in creating awareness and sharing knowledge and best practices about this online problem would be an understatement. Cyberbullying is a comparatively new issue across the world. Along with the inventions of communications technology comes great benefits but also great risks that can’t be ignored. Cyberbullying is a topic that needs to be taken seriously. Before a bully would only have power over their victims on occasions where they would physically interact with their victims. With new ways of interacting there comes new ways of hurting others. Texting, social media, and the internet itself were created for a beneficial purpose. Unfortunately, it is now being misused as mediums to hurt others in a way that can affect the victims at all hours of the day. In my honest belief and strongest opinion I believe that this book should be used in the education system to create more awareness to teens themselves and make them realize that social media, texting, and other forms of technology can become dangerous with misuse that can lead to severe consequences. It is never right to bully someone online and it is never right to send explicit photographs of oneself that we would never want other people to see. This book not only informs readers of the dangers of cyberbullying and sexting but it also encourages the reader to take action and fight against these major issues before they become an epidemic. What makes this book stand out is the connection that the authors establish with the readers. Any scholar can become interested in this topic and begin research on it, but when someone who has experienced the phenomenon as a child decides to dedicate their life to educate and help prevent bullying it brings more passion and insight to the topic. This is no ordinary book - it is a must read for everyone who works in schools these days.
