About the Author
Mark R. Pogrebin is a Professor and Director of Criminal Justice in the Graduate School of Public Affairs at the University of Colorado at Denver. He has conducted numerous field studies in the areas of police undercover work, tragic events, Afro-American policewomen, emotion management, women jailers, psychotherapists’ deviant behavior with clients, women in prison and on parole, and the strategic uses of humor among police. He has published three books and numerous journal articles and has had over twenty of his publications reprinted in anthologies. Professor Pogrebin has his M.A. from the John Jay College of Criminal Justice, City University of New York, and Ph.D. from the University of Iowa. A nationally-recognized authority in the field of criminal justice, Dr. Pogrebin held faculty positions at Florida State University and the University of Iowa prior to joining SPA in 1976. His present interests lie in the areas of criminology and penology, sociology of law and organizations, administration of justice, deviant behavior, and qualitative research methods.

About the Author
JOHN W. SANTROCK, Ph.D., is a leading author of college success and psychology textbooks. In addition to college success strategies, his research interests focus on the nature of family processes and the social development of children and adolescents.

JANE S. HALONEN, psychology professor, author, and critical thinking expert, is dean of the College of Arts and Sciences at the University of West Florida. Michael Reisch is the Daniel Thursz Distinguished Professor of Social Justice at the University of Maryland, Baltimore, School of Social Work. A former Woodrow Wilson Fellow and Fulbright Scholar, he has held faculty and administrative positions at the University of Maryland, University of Michigan, University of California, Berkeley, University of Pennsylvania, San Francisco State University and the State University of New York, Stony Brook, and been a visiting professor at universities in Europe, Asia, and Australia, . He has also directed national, state, and local policy advocacy organizations, political campaigns, social service agencies, and professional organizations. Reisch is the author, editor and co-editor of over 15 books and monographs and has written over 400 articles, book chapters, and conference papers. His work has been translated into ten languages. He is currently a SAGE advisor and series editor for Social Work in the New Century.

Easy-to-use textbook!

This book was a very easy-to-use textbook for my MSW program. The only thing lacking in this book is a focus on policies revolving around aging. I think the aging population is extremely important and should be considered in the next edition. This book is otherwise a simple, easy to navigate book.

Bray is an author and legal editor at Nolo, specializing in real estate, immigration law, and nonprofit fundraising. She is co-author of Nolo's Essential Guide to Buying Your First Home and also edits a number of Nolo's small business books. Only for major organizations

As a parent, I'm involved in fundraising for our child's school and also do volunteer consulting to a number of child related not for profits. I had chosen this book in hopes of learning how to more effectively raise funds for both.

This is a wonderful book if you are raising funds for a large not for profit...particularly in structuring proposals and major solicitations. However, this is not the book for the "kitchen" fundraiser...the parent or not for profit volunteer whose tools are limited to evening hours,personal passion and a few hundred dollars to spend at a big box office supply store.

I would love to read a book (of better yet, several) on fundraising tactics for schools and not for profits with limited means.

Should be issued to every nonprofit board member!

As a member of as non-profit board, I was immediately interested in this book. While I enjoy supporting my organization's mission and contributing my time, talent and resources, development isn't my strong suit. This book is for both novice and experienced members of non-profits and should be standard issue to every employee and board member. After reading this book, I handed it to our executive director with lots and lots of sticky notes giving my ideas on what we should be doing differently. Don't you just love board members like me!

The book's audience is the staff and board of a non-profit, but the primary focus is that of a board member and how you can direct the organization. We as board members need to take that overview of the organization in order to help it see the big picture. However this book expertly advises readers not just on the big picture of how to raise money for your organization, but covers the minutiae - such as writing effective solicitation letters, how to perform big and small tasks, and most importantly, how to effectively thank and recognize donors.

No stone was left unturned in this book and it is a fundraising bible. Experienced development directors can use it as a checklist to make sure they aren't focusing on one area while ignoring others. The organization I'm on the board of right now goes for the big asks and big events, but forgets the small stuff. Other groups I've been involved with are great on the individual donations but never apply for grants or foundations. In particular I appreciated the section on legacy and estate gifts which I just recently went to training for. Darn, if I had this book I could have completely avoiding getting up on a Sunday morning for a three hour training session on how to ask donors to add our organization to their will or make us beneficiaries on their life insurance or retirement policies.

If it involves raising money in any way, shape or form for your organization, this book covers it in great depth. Many readers will skip to the section their organization is in most need of help. Don't. Each section is golden in its advise and suggestions. Even in those areas I thought our non-profit did well in, I saw clear areas of improvement and how we can integrate other ideas in our giving community.

As a board member, I was excited, enthused and ready for action after reading this book. How many executive directors wouldn't love to be able to give that to a board member? No need--just give them this book and your job is done. Not really. An director's job is never done, but at least this book give your board understanding the importance of development and how everything that you do as an organization involves development.

Pros: A definitive guide to helping our organization raise money in every way shape and form.
Cons: Absolutely none, expect maybe for the fact it means I can't ignore development issues as as board member anymore. Great, more work for me.

About the Author
Randall E. Groth is an Associate Professor at Salisbury University. He brings to the book the experience of a former secondary school mathematics teacher, a current supervisor of student teachers, and a university perspective as secondary-level mathematics educator. As a former secondary teacher, Groth taught all levels of mathematics from remedial pre-algebra, algebra, and geometry to advanced placement calculus. As a supervisor of student teachers, he has seen firsthand the difficulties prospective teachers have as they enter the profession. As a university faculty member, he has taught mathematics education courses for prospective teachers for the past ten years. Groth has also published over 30 articles in peer-reviewed venues for mathematics education and received a distinguished faculty award as recognition of his strengths in teaching, scholarship, and service.

Great source to consider for a Secondary Mathematics Methods Course

Groth has brought together important elements of research supported practices for teaching mathematics and this is combined with samples of four-column lesson plans. Currently I plan to use this in my next methods course. Below are a few highlighted features - both strengths and areas to improve. By the way as of writing this, I don't know Groth and I had to google to see whether Salisbury was in the US.

Some Specific Strengths
Grounding in mathematical habits of mind broken into different discussions for number and operations, algebra, geometry, statistics and probability citing important sources such as Driscoll,
Four sample lesson plans at the conclusion of each of the five content-focused chapters.
A segment on teaching through problem solving is included as central in the classroom.
When references are given at the end of a chapter, Groth adds a brief description of the source.
He provides useful samples of what several reform-oriented curricula look like.
Groth has included appropriate sets of both mathematical tasks and pedagogical tasks. Important questions are demonstrated such as "Solve the problem in two different ways... Which way of solving is more efficient? Justify your position"

A Few Areas to Improve:
A few more citations behind each of the myths or "Assumptions" discussions held about learning mathematics. These are big issues and it would be useful to show more than one researcher debunking the myth.
Groth should consider a deeper segment on teacher questioning and add examples to the lesson plans. I'd refer him to Driscoll (1999) for guidance on this.
Still a bit more on helping new teachers recognize when a lesson is genuinely based in problem solving and perhaps some discussion on how teachers balance relevant algorithmic practice with central problem solving - this would be useful.
While the source "Adding It Up" is mentioned in an appendix, I would hope that in a future edition Groth might recognize the importance of this work and consider sharing the strands of mathematical proficiency given.

The strengths outweigh the areas for improvement when I compare this to some other secondary methods books.

About the Author

Relevant, straightforward advice on investing and lifestyle issues faced by all retirees, early and late.

As one of the early semi-retirees profiled in the book and related to the author, it would be fair to suspect my recommendations here, but I can assure you that Bob has written a complete and concise book addressing the issues to be faced if you wish to break out of the day to day grind of the modern day work force. It may seem like I would be automatically privy to all of this information by virtue of my relation, but the plain truth is that I needed this book, especially the detailed information about where to put my money to make it work the hardest for me. All of the theories and studies from the last 75 years have been boiled down to easily digested and implemented solutions, which I am now in the process of carrying out. Bob also addresses lifestyle issues that I am currently going through, and it helps to know that I am not unique in the problems I am facing regarding constructive use of my time and mind. This information alone is important to all retirees, early or not. It is critical to all humans that we have something stimulating to do every day to avoid sliding into early dementia and depression. Bob covers these subjects and more from an experienced point of view. (This is not to infer that he suffers from dementia, at least not the type brought on by early retirement!)

Bottom line is that for the price of 3 Happy Meals you can set an incredible foundation for the rest of your life, no matter when you actually leave the work force.

Tons of good, usable financial and motivational advice

I read this book cover to cover after getting it and am now going through it more slowly, taking notes on all the useful bits of advice. To be honest, I'd never thought about "semi-retirement" until I heard of this book, and it's proved to be the one idea that excites me.

The tone is pitched just right for people who have been saving and investing for years and are informed but still need some basic guidance for this new period of life. The book gives you strong kudos for living below your means and then helps you figure out how that translates into leaving the rat race earlier than you could ever have hoped for. I especially liked the chapters "Put Your Investing on Autopilot," "Take 4% Forever," and "Do Anything You Want, But Do Something." Each of them have very specific advice, examples, and resources and appealed to me in their simplicity.

I really couldn't have found a better book as I contemplate leaving corporate America at age 48, and I plan to refer back to it many times. Now I feel more ready and excited "to pursue the rest of my life"...

Excellent resource on several levels

If you have spent the last twenty years working toward the dream of Early Retirement as I have then this book will give you the tools to complete your plan. It is very well written and organized. It is an easy read yet has lots of useful detail that I found myself re-reading to not miss any information.

The book also is so detailed that once you complete the planning that it walks you through you will have the confidence to move forward with you life. It really does address the emotional side of Early Retirement also.

If you want to make a positive change in your work life and retire early then read this book!

Excellent, Everything You Need to Know

This book is a legal guide to owning and running a craft business. I do a lot of fiber crafts, and this book answers my questions regarding selling my products. It is easy to read, and covers topics in depth, including how to price your products; your work space; doing business online; hiring employees; business forms of all types, which are included on a cd; copyrights; design patents; names and trademarks; licensing; taxes; and lawyers, contracts and lawsuits.
Richard Stim also includes some case examples and tips to begin a successful business.
For me, this information allows me to examine how to form a craft company; which way to proceed initially; how to handle the business aspects and legalities, particularly taxes, and more, including further resources.
In the past, I have done consulting work (not in crafts) and found it difficult to obtain the information I needed on how to administer my own (one person) business, and spent a lot of money on accountants and lawyers. With this book, all that information is readily available and up to date, I wish I had had it then.
The information here is also solid for businesses other than crafts, and would cover most home businesses with invaluable help.
The book is also very current in recent legal changes, such as CPSIA requirements, which can be quite pertinent to a crafts business.
I cannot recommend this book highly enough to anyone contemplating selling crafts informally, or starting a more structured business.

"Two and a half years later and those designs are still making money."

There comes a time in the life of most crafters where they have to decide to either stay in the realm of their local farmer's market or try to break out into the big leagues. The growing pains can be brutal, and it pays to prepare. NOLO's "The Craft Artist's Legal Guide" is the kind of book crafters should buy, read, re-read, study like a college course, and keep on the shelf for frequent reference. It isn't exhaustive and it isn't fun reading, but there are some lessons that no one should learn the hard way and many of them are here.

Hiring a rep, filing for copyright, launching a website, paying taxes, suing the pants off anyone copying your toilet paper holder, and more are clearly laid out in a mostly cohesive manner. There's also a CD with numerous legal forms all made up for you; the forms alone are worth the price of the book. Nothing fancy, but legally solid and boy will you need them. The best chapter I think is actually the first, a practical breakdown of wholesale and retail pricing. Excellent.

There are however, a few drawbacks. The advice on potential markets is frankly dated; nothing about the vast upscale natural foods markets that gladly purchase handmade crafts (everything from artisan soaps to organic clothing). For the right kind of craft a natural foods market is going to be a much better bet than an art gallery. As noted in the guide, galleries have an annoying tendency to go bankrupt. NOLO also repeatedly advises craft artists to ask other artists for referrals when searching for reps or researching costs; this seems like fobbing off answers to me. If your work is already sold at an organic market, for example, you could ask the merchandiser or buyer who they would recommend. They have strong reasons to refer you to excellent sales reps and they tend to know everybody in the area (and perhaps even nationally).

In summation, this NOLO guide is heavy on legal technicalities but sometimes sketchy when discussing how the independent crafter industry really works. Before buying you might want to peruse the table of contents and make sure the subjects discussed answer questions that apply to you and your business (Some NOLO guides are more comprehensive. For example, the NOLO "Healthy Employees, Healthy Business" Guide covers virtually every aspect of creating a wellness program, legal and otherwise.) If the topics are of interest to you, or if you are at the point where you want to file for copyright or set up a corporation, this is well worth an investment and rates:

Before you hire a lawyer, consider this book, whose subtitle is "Protect Your Work, Save on Taxes, Maximize Profits," as a concise guide that can provide every artist: illustrator, musician, sculptor, writer, painter, digital artist, etc., with the tools necessary to conduct and protect their craft. It will provide you with the essentials that you'll need to get started, inform you about the in/outs of buying/ selling/ leasing or protect your valuable work from unnecessary litigation.

But, this is much more than an overview of a legal guide. At the heart of it is, however, is a congenial discussion concerning the broad cross-section of issues (business, legal, budgetary and ethical) that any artist would normally come into.

Additionally, there are discussions dealing with taxes, various types of insurances, marketing for the internet, print and radio and distinguishing between the various ownership models: sole proprietorship & partnership, Limited Liability Partnership ("LLC"), and Incorporation.

Subjects covered:
+ Contracts and responsibilities (facsimiles of releases)
+ Calculating a budget (basic principles)
+ Discussion on known and rare forms of insurances.

About the Author
David Matsumoto received his B.A. from the University of Michigan in 1981 with High Honors in Psychology and Japanese. He subsequently earned his M.A. (1983) and Ph.D. (1986) in psychology from the University of California at Berkeley. He is currently Professor of Psychology and Director of the Culture and Emotion Research Laboratory at San Francisco State University, where he has been since 1989. He is also Director of Humintell, LLC, a company that provides research, consultation, and training on nonverbal behavioral analysis and cross-cultural adaptation. He has studied culture, emotion, social interaction and communication for over 30 years. His books include well-known titles such as Culture and Psychology, the Cambridge Dictionary of Psychology, and Cross-Cultural Research Methods in Psychology. He is the recipient of many awards and honors in the field of psychology, including being named a G. Stanley Hall lecturer by the American Psychological Association. He is the series editor for Cambridge University Press’ series on Culture and Psychology. He is also Editor-in-Chief for the Journal of Cross-Cultural Psychology.

Mark G. Frank is a professor and Director of the Communication Science Center at the University at Buffalo. He received his Ph.D. in Social Psychology from Cornell University in 1989, and afterward received a National Research Service Award from the National Institute of Mental Health to do postdoctoral research with Dr. Paul Ekman in the Psychiatry Department at the University of California at San Francisco Medical School. He had previously been on the faculty in the School of Psychology at the University of New South Wales in Australia, as well as the Communication Department at Rutgers University in New Jersey. He has published numerous research papers on facial expressions, emotion, and interpersonal deception, with much of the work funded by The National Science Foundation, Homeland Security, and the Department of Defense. He is also the co-developer of an automated computer system to read facial expressions. He has used these findings to lecture, consult with and train virtually all US Federal Law Enforcement/Intelligence Agencies, as well as local/state and select foreign agencies. He has also given workshops to US and foreign judges and magistrates. He has presented briefings to the National Academy of Sciences and the US Congress on Deception and Counter-terrorism. Finally, he has appeared in over 80 print, radio, and television appearances to talk about his work, including Time Magazine, New York Times, CBS Evening News, CNN, Fox News Channel, National Public Radio, The Learning Channel, the Discovery Channel, the Oprah Show, and so forth.

Hyi-Sung Hwang received her M.A. from San Francisco State University, and her Ph.D. from the Center for Psychological Studies of the Graduate School of Human Behavior, Berkeley, CA, 2009. She is a Research Scientist at Humintell, LLC, and Visiting Scholar at San Francisco State University. Her research interests are in emotion, nonverbal behaviors, and culture. She is an expert at the Facial Action Coding System and in the conduct of research examining facial expressions and other nonverbal behaviors. She is co-creator of many of the training tools used to teach law enforcement officers, national security personnel, and intelligence agents, as well as individuals in many other professions how to recognize micro and subtle facial expressions of emotion. She has also co-authored numerous scientific articles and book chapters on nonverbal behavior, facial expressions, and culture, and has made presentations of her research nationally and internationally.

It is a must read if you are interested in behavioral sciences!

I just finished reading Dr. David Matsumoto's most recent book, Nonverbal Communication: Science and Applications.
This book is the book that has been missing from library shelves across the world!

The field of non-verbal communication is an ever evolving field. Numerous research projects are conducted every year and many authors continue to write books each year. However, it was time for someone like Dr. David Matsumoto to make clear and precise points on the subject.

Surrounded by two leading experts, Mark G. Frank & Hyi Sung Hwang, they were able to write a quality and informative text that has great simplicity and is easily understood. All three were able to create a much needed addition to microexpression training that has a sizable quantity of references.

From the first pages, I immediately felt that I was holding a great reference for non-verbal communication, carefully written by experts who know what they are talking about.

The first part of the book is written by the three previously mentioned authors, in collaboration with other professionals and colleagues and each chapter is documented, with clear and precise references, which makes it easy to follow up on studies and current research in the field.

The second part presents an implementation of the concepts discussed in the first part. The authors are professionals who explain how they use their knowledge of nonverbal communication on a daily basis. Although very interesting, I must admit that I enjoyed the first part more.

This book is a masterpiece written by three recognized experts in the science of non-verbal communication.

great book

Bought this for my son as a gift. He just graduated with his psyc degree and is going into law enforcement. You know it's a great book when you child ask for text book as a gift after they've graduated and they carry it with them for weeks reading every detail in it. He said what he's read will help him greatly in law enforcement and it will be a good reference guide for years to come.
