About the Author
Katherine Ackley earned a Master's degree in English from Purdue University and a Ph.D. in English from Ball State University. She taught at the University of Wisconsin, Stevens Point from 1979 to 2002. In addition to teaching in the English Department, she was coordinator of the Women's Studies Program for 10 years and Assistant Dean of Graduate Studies for five years. Her research interests center on women in literature, with emphasis on literary representations of women's issues and, more recently, British crime writers. Her books include THE NOVELS OF BARBARA PYM (1989), WOMEN AND VIOLENCE IN LITERATURE: AN ESSAY COLLECTION (1990), MISOGYNY IN LITERATURE: AN ESSAY COLLECTION (1992), ESSAYS FROM CONTEMPORARY CULTURE (2004, 5th Edition), and PERSPECTIVES ON CONTEMPORARY ISSUES (2015, 7th Edition). She has published dozens of articles and has received more than 20 grants for research and development. In 1992, she became the first woman to receive the UWSP University Scholar Award.

A book worth keeping.

As a student I was required to purchase this book.

I certainly did not expect this book to be so enlightening to read. Not only were the articles interesting, but mostly nice and short. Also I liked how it was divided into twenty chapters, some of which include film and television, media studies, criminal behavior, terrorism and war, & education.

One day, I was just flipping through the book, and because I had in interest in the criminal behavior chapter, I read all of the articles on my free time. Oh wait, but that is unheard of!

The book's pretty niffty. And in combination with the fact that I can't sell it back for jacksquat, I'm keeping this badboy and using it for some nice leisure reading.

Great condition. Worn corners, but no highlighting. I thought it was too good to be true, but it was the real deal in great condition. It saved me $50 compared to the price of the book store!

Book quality is very poor

The item was shrink-wrapped but the cover was covered in weird flakes of white gunk. The "book" cover is too shoddy and flimsy for $35-- the spiral binding is already starting to fray and tear right after I took it out of the packaging.

Consult the Style Manual Instead

The book is okay and gives you some tips for composing a term paper; however, if you already have the proper style guide, there is no reason to buy this book.

Now if it's available on reserve in your school library, it is not a waste of time to read. But, I would not buy it again.

Well structured and indexed and funny

The law can be a dry and dull read, but these authors have introduced just enough humour to make the effort worthwhile. The names of almost every party in the numerous cases sprinkled throughout the book are puns or double entendres, and some of them are a little tricky to figure out, making for a nice diversion when the subject might otherwise have been tedious.
The whole arrangement of the book is meant to reflect the entire legal process and is extremely logical and accessible. It is excellently cross-referenced and makes frequent reference to the relevant sections of state and federal laws. The writing style is conversational and quite readable.
The authors take great pains to comment on those aspects of law that vary from state to state, which I found helpful considering how I was raised in one state and now live in another and took certain things for granted.
All the legal terms that are introduced are carefully explained, and facsimiles of the various legal documents, such as search and arrest warrants, are included at the end of each chapter.
One unusual feature that shows the depth of the authors' treatment is how they comment on the emotional state that defendants, victims and court personnel are typically in at various stages of the proceedings. They use this to explain how that may influence people's behavior and argue for or against certain courses of action, such as talking to police alone or waiting for a lawyer to arrive, etc.

Outstanding resource

This book provides an excellent overview of criminal law for the layperson. The authors provide a sound overview of complex topics without getting bogged down in the endless minutia inherent to criminal law.
It is also refreshing that the authors do not waste the reader's time by interjecting ideological and social policy opinions into the book.
Whether your interest in criminal law arises from intellectual curiousity or from finding yourself "in the system", I don't believe you will find a better introductory book than this.

Getting it right

An excellent source book for "getting it right" for lay persons who want to "cut to the quick" in the search for answers to legal problems concerning the criminal law system. No mumbo jumbo legalese here, just straight talk in plain English. Kudos to you and your effort.

Mª Victoria Garcia Serrano (Conquista de la Sierra, Spain) studied Hispanic Philology-Linguistics at the Universidad Complutense de Madrid. She received her PhD in Contemporary Latin American Literature from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Her areas of research are literary theory and writing by Hispanic women authors.

Cristina de la Torre was born in Cuba and moved to the United States as a child. She received her undergraduate degree from the University of Miami, Florida, and her Ph.D. in Spanish from Emory University. She spent several years in Madrid, Spain, where she was inspired to begin her dual career as professor of Spanish and literary translator.

About the Author
Jo Anne Hartel got a Master's Degree in Teaching ESOL from the School for International Training in Brattleboro, VT. She taught ESOL, Reading and Writing to adults at the Community Learning Center in Cambridge, MA since 1976.

Betsy Lowry has a BA in psychology from Wellesley College, 1969. She earned a MA in French Literature from University of Texas, 1983. After moving to Boston in 1985, Betsy taught ESOL for 14 years at the Community Learning Center in Cambridge, where she has been the director for the past 4 years.

Whit Hendon is a graduate of the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. He works at the Community Learning Center in Cambridge, Massachusetts and teaches a literacy level class using Sam and Pat.

Negative Stereotypes

I found the content of the stories to be somewhat stereotypically offensive. Sam and Pat are a married couple. The book describes Sam as a "fat man" and his wife Pat as a "good cook." Pat is a lunch lady who serves "icky" fishsticks to the children at school. Sam loses his job because he stays out late and oversleeps. I'm not sure that this is the best representation of a typical married couple in the United States!

An excellent book for adult students learning English. For students who don't know the abc sounds yet, I use the abc English books first (www.teachabcenglish.com), then move on to this book and Sam and Pat 2 next.

I am working with adult English Language Learners and like this book for them. Adults can relate to the stories and it is written to follow a primarily phonics approach with some longer words.

About the Author
Phyllis Lim, Ph.D., taught intensive ESL for over 20 years at the Center for English as a Second Language at the University of Arizona, directed the MATEFL Program at Bilkent University (Turkey) as a Fulbright Senior Scholar for two years, and directed the English Language Center at the University of Sharjah, UAE, for five years. She also received Fulbright teaching scholarships to Slovenia and Italy as well as an English Language Fellowship to Libya. Her first introduction to living and working overseas was a semester teaching EFL at the Beijing Institute of Foreign Languages in 1983 on an exchange program with the University of Arizona.
