About the Author
Carol Friend is an Associate Professor in the English/Languages department of the Liberal Arts Division of Mercer County Community College in central New Jersey. She has coordinated the Developmental Reading department since 2001 and the ESL department since Spring 2013. Carol has been a college professor since 1982 and has taught developmental reading, English composition, and ESL for over 30 years. She received her undergraduate degree from Michigan State University, her graduate degree from San Francisco State University, and her TOEFL certificate from the Notre Dame de Namur University. Her textbooks include THE LEAST YOU SHOULD KNOW ABOUT VOCABULARY BUILDING: WORD ROOTS, 8th Edition; JOURNEYS: READINGS ACROSS THE ACADEMIC DISCIPLINES; and THE OPEN MIND, 3rd Edition.

Laura D. Knight is a Professor of English in the Liberal Arts Division of Mercer County Community College in central New Jersey, where she coordinated the English department's writing program for more than ten years. Laura has taught all levels of writing as well as reading, film, history, and literature at various colleges since 1980. She received her undergraduate degree from the State University of New York at Potsdam and her Masters of Humanities and Masters of English degrees from the State University of New York at Buffalo. In addition to teaching, she scores the English portion of the Praxis teacher's certification examination for Educational Testing Service. Clear, Consise, and Effective Learning

The Least You Should Know about Vocabulary Building: Word Roots is a slim yet effective book. The book is divided alphabetically into word roots from Greek and Latin -- A, An, Anthro, Bi, Bio, (etc.). Each word root starts with an explanation of the root, and then words using that root are listed with the definition, the phonetic pronounciation, and a sentence. Exercises follow. Clear, consise, and effective, those who want to increase their vocabulary and learn the roots of words will benefit from this book. Once you learn that root, other words' meanings become understandable. I particularly like that each section is managable, no more than 30 words for each root and that the exercises (answers in the back) reinforce the root's meaning. High school students, beginning college students or those who want to increase their vocabulary for better reading comprehension will benefit from this book.

This is a great book to have. I had it before because it was required in one of my college classes and I just feel like this is a book that I want to have. Has great vocab words and you see all the words in this book all the time.

About the Author
Katherine Ackley earned a Master's degree in English from Purdue University and a Ph.D. in English from Ball State University. She taught at the University of Wisconsin, Stevens Point from 1979 to 2002. In addition to teaching in the English Department, she was coordinator of the Women's Studies Program for 10 years and Assistant Dean of Graduate Studies for five years. Her research interests center on women in literature, with emphasis on literary representations of women's issues and, more recently, British crime writers. Her books include THE NOVELS OF BARBARA PYM (1989), WOMEN AND VIOLENCE IN LITERATURE: AN ESSAY COLLECTION (1990), MISOGYNY IN LITERATURE: AN ESSAY COLLECTION (1992), ESSAYS FROM CONTEMPORARY CULTURE (2004, 5th Edition), and PERSPECTIVES ON CONTEMPORARY ISSUES (2015, 7th Edition). She has published dozens of articles and has received more than 20 grants for research and development. In 1992, she became the first woman to receive the UWSP University Scholar Award.

Mr. Wood began his educational career as an English teacher, teaching high school and university level literature and writing classes for 14 years. He then served as the Communication Arts Consultant for the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education for five years. During his time at DESE, Mr. Wood wrote the state’s Curriculum Frameworks for Communication Arts, led the development of the state’s communication arts assessment, and started the state’s first intensive K-3 professional development model for improving reading instruction (the Missouri Reading Initiative). During his time as a teacher and state educational consultant, Mr. Wood became fascinated with exploring the biological underpinnings of effective teaching and learning. He left DESE in 2000 to become a full-time educational consultant and presenter so he could share his passion for brain-compatible teaching practices with educators around the world. He now serves as President of Open Mind Technologies, Inc., an educational consulting firm. The author lives in Missouri with his wife, Debbie, and has three sons. A Great How-To for Teachers Willing to Stretch

This is the perfect research-based guide for a teacher intrigued by the potential of music in his/her classroom but clueless as to how to pursue it. Allen and Wood are detailed and specific in laying out strategy after strategy for how and why to use music, K-12, with chapters on "Music to Work To," music for "Calming the Restless Natives," "Using Pump-Up Music to Energize Students," and more. They also provide long lists of titles of recordings from the full range of pop genres (R&R, hip hop, country, etc.) as well as a smattering of classical titles (Would there were more of these!). In the appendices there are lists of "Songs That Match Classroom Activities": e.g., "Color Songs," "Name Songs," "Movement Songs," etc. And should a teacher need the strength of research to convince her/his administrator that this music thing is not just a frill, the authors provide ample references and notes to support their claims of music's efficacy in enhancing classroom teaching and learning.

Good teachers play music in their classroom;Great teachers utilize it

I have always used music in my classroom to set the mood but The Rock 'n' Roll Classroom helped me to realize how much more it could do. Signaling transitions, timing events, and controlling student energy and focus are tasks I had to deal with every day. I worked hard, too hard, with my words and own energy to do them successfully. This book helped me figure out how to let the music do the work for me. By selecting the right songs to signal our routines my whole classroom management system became easier and more enjoyable. I am no longer clapping, flashing lights or raising my voice to gain attention. Students are happier; I am happier. Now at the end of the day my kids aren't the only ones left with energy!

William Shakespeare may have been referring to romantic love, but those of us who have ever participated in any activity accompanied by music can tell you that music has a way to touch us, inspire us, revive us, and pep us up! To feel happy and passionate about the task at hand.
The Rock n Roll Classroom is a dynamic, interactive and refreshing approach to bringing learning, creative thinking, and movement into the classroom. Students, and teachers, need to feel free to combine academics and multiple ways of learning and enjoyment in the process. Neuroscience research has proven that music stimulates various parts of the brain at once - visual cortex, neurons, motor cortex and cerebellum - just to name a few. Much research has linked music to happiness. Rhythm and movement stimulate learning and activate a higher level of processing. Consider watching early childhood students learning Itsy Bitsy Spider complete with hand movements. How much more quickly they learn the words - and how much more enjoyable is the learning for all involved? Where does it say that this must stop when we get older? Join me and so many others in exploring The Rock n Roll Classroom and instituting smiles, learning, laughter, deeper meaning, and FUN in learning. With that being said, I ask you: what would be wrong with all that brain activity and happiness in the classroom? Loving learning? I think Shakespeare would emphatically say, `Play on!'

About the Author
Carla Larese Riga received her Master of Arts from Stanford University and has worked toward a PhD at the University of California, Berkley. She has over 30 years of experience as a dedicated professor of Italian at various institutions, including Santa Clara University, Stanford University, Foothill College, and De Anza College. She is a scholar of romance languages and is fluent in Italian, French, and Spanish.

Chiara Maria Dal Martello, a native of Vicenza, received her Laurea from the University of Urbino in English / Spanish and Italian Languages and Literatures, and she is currently a Ph.D. candidate in English Linguistics at Arizona State University. She has taught Italian Language and Culture at Big Bend Community College in Vicenza, Italy, and has been teaching at Arizona State University (ASU) since 1996 where she is now a Lecturer in Italian in the Department of Languages and Literature. While at ASU she has developed a new curriculum for the first- and second-year program, including online Italian courses, as well as two new upper-level courses, Italian for the Professions and History of the Italian Language. With her colleagues she is currently developing a new multimedia curriculum for the second-year Italian courses. She specializes in second-language acquisition, bilingualism and gender studies.

Ciao! is being used at my university for the first three semesters of Italian courses, so I have had an opportunity to thoroughly use the text. While I am a new student of the Italian language, I have studied the French language since for several years using some outstanding texts.

It seems there are few major Italian textbooks on the market, and unfortunately none of them seem particularly good pedagogically speaking. This book is "good" howevever, I would not recommend it for self-study for several reasons:

1. The organization of the text is not particularly logical. Grammar rules are scattered throughout the chapters. It is not until halfway through the text that the student learns the possessive pronouns (his, her, their, our, your, theirs, etc...) yet, they are used frequently in the dialogues and exercises leading up to their actual discussion in the text. My problem with this is that the student is goes too long without learning how to use the possessives and has too much of an opportunity to develop incorrect usage and sentence structure during the first half of the book.

2. The corresponding CD contains only the dialogues which are found at the opening of each chapter. While its nice to have these to listen to, the student would benefit much more from hearing the vocabulary words pronounced! This was probably one of the most frustrating challenges I faced when learning Italian-- lack of access to a quality audio lexicon.

3. The exercises are good- but there is no answer key. Again, for students, having a resource like an answer key is essential for developing proper sentence structure and avoiding the development of poor habits. The corresponding workbook (Ciao! Quaderno degli esercizi Workbook and Lab Manual will cost you another $70.00 and does have an answer key available (Audioscript (with Answer Key) for Ciao!, 6th for which you'll need to shell out an addition $10.00. However, the workbook with answers is by no means deserving of your $80.00, so hold off on purchasing those.

4. The cultural interludes which are found at the conclusion of each chapter are extremely complicated and completely written in Italian starting from the first chapter. Needless to say, the student doesn't learn much about the culture since its too difficult for a novice student to read!

There are some positives to the text however. There are a number of up-to-date idiomatic expressions and new technology (such as cell phones) are included in the vocabulary lists. It is a nicely illustrated book and the chapters are limited small, manageable selections so that the student doesn't feel overwhelmed. With the right instructor, one can learn quite nicely out of this book in a classroom setting.

For the self-learner, who does not have daily access to an Italian-speaking friend, I recommend the following alternative texts which may prove more effective for home-study:

6. Italian for Dummies (With Audio CD)
7. Routledge Intensive Italian Workbook (Routledgeintensive Language Courses)

Ciao textbook book

This is a good review book for Italian learners. It does not go into the depth that an initial course in Italian would, but it serves the excellent purpose of reviewing for those who have already been thru all of the grammar. There was no CD in this book because it came to me used.

Very good legal reference for the non-lawyer.

"Nolo's Plain-English Law Dictionary" by the Editors of Nolo, Gerald N. Hill and Kathleen Thompson Hill is promoted as, "This is `not' you grandfather's law dictionary." This law dictionary is written in clear English and contains compete definitions of legal terms you need today.

As an attorney, this book will not replace my "Black's Law Dictionary" which is the standard for legal dictionaries, but this lighter, plain-English text is very convenient to have on hand. For most people, this text is all they would need when wondering about a legal term.

To illustrate the differences in dictionaries, let's look at the word "partner." Most of us know what it means, and it is a common word that we use in business all the time. The definition in "Nolo's Plain-English Law Dictionary" is:

"One of the co-owners and investors in a partnership. Each partner claims a share of the the (sic) business's income or losses on the partner's individual tax return. General partners are responsible for the debts, contracts, and actions of all the partners in the business. Limited partners do not share responsibility for partnership debts and cannot share in management decisions." (Note that I found a typo in the definition noted with the (sic)).

"Black's Law Dictionary" provides much more under the listing of "partner."

"A member of partnership or firm; one who has united with others to form a partnership in business." The there are definitions for each of the following: Dormant partners, full or general partner, junior partner, limited partner, liquidating partner, nominal partner, ostensible partner, quasi partner, secret partner, silent partner, special partner, and surviving partner.

"Black's" contains much more than "Nolo's," but that is what you expect, and for most people who are not attorneys, "Black's" has much more than is needed, and is not as easy to understand as "Nolo's." The size and cost of the books is very different too. "Black's is a very large and heavy book, and much more expensive. "Nolo's Plain-English Law Dictionary" is smaller, paperback, easier to grab off the shelf or take with you, and costs less.

If you would like an easy to understand law dictionary, full of the most common terms non-lawyers will most likely need, this book will be a very good addition to your reference library.

OK - Online Resources are Often Better

This book is pretty good if you want to read it from A to Z, as a means of rounding out your legal vocabulary.

For word lookups, better to use [...] or [...] There is also an online version of this dictionary at Nolo's website.

I compared 20 Nolo definitions with those available on [...] and Wikipedia. The Nolo definitions are usually clear and helpful, but in most cases the [...] definitions were just as good. Most of the Wikipedia articles were superior.

The book's definitions vary a lot in length and quality. Most of them are 30-80 words. Many cover the legal meaning of a word that is different from its everyday meaning (cure, discovery, injury, probable cause). Most of them give a short tutorial on legal principles that surround the word (very helpful). Some definitions are unnecessary or unhelpful:

insured -- The person or entity who is covered by an insurance policy.
family -- A group of people related by consanguinity or affinity.
harass -- To engage in harassment.

Pronunciations are provided for some difficult words, but not others (like escheat, laches, nihil, veniremen).

It is 100% focused on U.S. law.

Sometimes a physical reference book is handy. But Nolo has not crafted this into a reference masterpiece.

Like a college student trying to puff up his term paper, Nolo has made the book about 40% larger and heavier than it needs to be. It has overly generous line spacing and more than a few pointless entries: (distinguish, income tax, legal, receipt, rent).

Over 200 amusing sidebars include quotes, anecdotes, and (legal theme) movie summaries. These will help you through it if reading the book from cover to cover.

Legal "Starter" Dictionary

A lawyer, law student, or paralegal can never have too many law dictionaries! This one is a "starter dictionary", with simple, generalized definitions of terms that an individual might overhear or otherwise encounter while working around legal professionals. It's a dictionary to consult when you don't want to interrupt a conversation to ask what is being talked about.

However, the word selection is somewhat spotty. For example, the PKPA (Parental Kidnapping Prevention Act) and UCCJEA (Uniform Child Custody Jurisdiction and Enforcement Act) are defined, but there is no mention of the equally important ICWA (Indian Child Welfare Act). Also, there are definitions for "community property" and "separate property" but none for "transmutation" or "tracing". Many of the included terms aren't legal terms at all, at least not in the traditional sense. Examples of these are the Internet terms "phishing", "cybersquatting", and "dooced".

A major shortcoming of the dictionary is that many definitions are vague and wander off into discussions of related concepts. For example, "forum" is defined as: "The court in which a lawsuit is filed or in which a hearing or trial is conducted. The appropriate forum depends on which court has personal jurisdiction over the parties and the subject matter of the case." Some definitions don't quite hit the mark with me. For example, "BFP" is defined as: "Slang for bona fide purchaser." To me, the term is not slang, but an acronym in wide use. Perhaps the authors believed that "acronym" wasn't "plain English"--even though Google searches for texting terms like "BFF" will take you immediately to online dictionaries of acronyms.

For law students, the definitions are not precise enough. For example, "adverse possession" is defined, in part, as: "A means by which one can legally take another's property without paying for it," and goes on to say that the requirements usually include continuous and open use for a period of five years or more, and paying taxes. Black's Law Dictionary includes the additional information that law students will need, which is that acquisition of title by adverse possession requires nonpermissive use that is actual, open, notorious, exclusive, and adverse for a statutory period. Also, for persons representing themselves in court, the definitions are probably not precise enough.

An odd feature is the inclusion of short quotations, bits of legal trivia, and movie descriptions--identified respectively by drawings of a loudspeaker, a gavel, and a film canister. These items are scattered randomly throughout the dictionary. They are entertaining, but suggest that the dictionary doesn't take itself particularly seriously, given that they don't seem to illustrate any definitions on the pages where they appear.

In short, this dictionary is no substitute for a standard legal dictionary. The dictionary is useful for understanding legal terms in a general sort of way, and it may be helpful in unlocking the meaning of the definitions included in a standard legal dictionary. It also may prove to be enjoyable casual reading for prospective law students, legal buffs, and dictionary buffs like myself. This dictionary will go onto my bookshelf of legal dictionaries, but it definitely won't be the one that I reach for first.

About the Author
Dieter Sevin, a native of Germany, was Professor of German at Vanderbilt University. He received grants from organizations such as the American Philosophical Association, American Council of Learned Societies, German Academic Exchange Service, and the Vanderbilt Research Council.

Ingrid Sevin, a native of Germany, has been teaching German and French at the high school and college level in the United States and in Germany for more than ten years. From 1987 to 2002, she was the editor of the German audio-magazine SCHAU INS LAND.

About the Author
Jean Wyrick is Professor Emerita of English at Colorado State University, where she was Director of Composition for 11 years. She has more than 25 years of experience teaching writing, training writing teachers, and designing writing/writing-across-the-curriculum programs. Her other textbooks include THE RINEHART READER and DISCOVERING IDEAS. She has presented over a hundred workshops and papers on the teaching of writing, American literature, American Studies, and Women's Studies.
