About the Author
Anthony Mancuso is a corporations and limited liability company expert. He graduated from Hastings College of Law in San Francisco, is a member of the California State Bar, writes books and software in the fields of corporate and LLC law, and studies advanced business taxation at Golden Gate University in San Francisco. He has also been a consultant for Silicon Valley EDA (Electronic Design Automation) companies, most recently working on a C++ open-source integrated circuit database project team. He is the author of several Nolo books on forming and operating corporations (both profit and nonprofit) and limited liability companies. His titles include Incorporate Your Business, How to Form a Nonprofit Corporation (national and California editions), Form Your Own Limited Liability Company, The Corporate Records Handbook, and LLC or Corporation?. He wrote and programmed Nolo's LLC Maker and Incorporator Pro software programs, which generate state-by-state articles and other forms for organizing corporations and LLCs. His books and software have shown over a quarter of a million businesses and organizations how to form a corporation or LLC. INVALUABLE!!!!

I love non-fiction books that actually do what they claim will do -- and this book definitely falls into that category!

I am founding a private school in Houston called "Summerhill School for Gifted Performers" and was advised that I needed to form a nonprofit corporation and apply for 501(c)(3) tax exempt status. I didn't even know how to start THINKING about that! My friend recommended this book and said to just read each step and follow it. I was suspicious, but girded my loins and dove in. It was evident right away that this book would take me very carefully and very thoroughly through each tiny step of the process.

I am about halfway through the book and have cut my way right through a good-size pile scary red tape. I have registered our school's name, chosen a board of directors, and filed our articles of incorporation with the secretary of state's office. It was actually MUCH easier than I thought it would be. Next steps: bylaws and 501(c)(3) application.

You COULD hire an attorney to do all of this for you, but why?!? This book makes it very possible to do all this on your own!

Like having a lawyer in a book

Anthony Mancuso has packed a lot of legal expertise in a easy to understand book. Here's some strengths of the book:
* Checklist very handy to accomplish all the tasks in the correct order
* The author asks common questions and then answers them clearly
* Advice on what to do and what to avoid
* It's like having a lawyer in a book

Weaknesses:
* Bylaws a bit overly long for small, new nonprofits
* Not enough emphasis on the need for accounting help to file annual IRS Form 990. Lawyers usually walk out of the picture after 501c3 status is achieved, leaving the accountants to help with annual filings.

I'm a CPA and took business law classes in college, but this book was essential when I started working in the nonprofit sector.

Great reference book for anyone.

We are owners of a small business and recently we lost our bookkeeper/receptionist after 10 years. I have had to take over collections. This book was of great help to someone who has never gone to court. The book covers both sides of a court claim. This gives you a feel of possible ways the defendant will react and how they might present evidence. I also have had to go to Debtor's Court and the book explained all the rights and thing I should ask for inorder to get the money that is owed to our busines. It covers general information for all state on laws on how long to have to refile etc. Great book for any small business owners who have to deal with the small claims court systems. Five Stars for great reference book to have in your office!!!!!!

A Good Reference Book On Small Claims Court

This book has information on how to prepare your case, win in court and collect your money. You can learn how to determine the damages, mediate the settlement, write a demand letter, file and serve papers, prepare for court and collect your money when you win. A big plus, this book includes information for all 50 States. For 24-hour access to straightforward legal solutions check out [...] The author, Ralph Warner, helped found Nolo in 1971, and is one of the recognized pioneers of the self-help law movement.

Keep in mind that on some smaller cases you have no choice but to work the case without a lawyer since the amount of money involved may not be enough to cover the expense of an attorney. This book will be a lifesaver.

Julia Nissley was Probate Administrator with the Los Angeles law firm of Silverberg, Rosen, Leon & Behr for many years. She is an honors graduate of the Attorney Assistant Training Program in Probate Administration at the University of California Los Angeles School of Law, and a member of the UCLA Attorney Assistant Alumni Association and the Los Angeles Paralegals Association. Julia is a native Californian and enjoys playing tennis and riding trains with her husband, Ron. Indispensable - a tremendous value at twice the price!

As a layman with no legal experience whatsoever, I acted as executor and recently concluded probate... from another state entirely, without ever having set foot in California! All of the court-related matters were handled through the mail/fax thanks to the indispensable guidance of this book.
Even if you're not acting as executor (or can't decide if you should), any party to probate should consider this book a "must-have". It is written for an executor but there is so much information on the 'mysterious' court procedures, anyone involved in a CA probate would be well-served by purchasing this book if for nothing other than to know "what is probate?" and "what is going on?"
As executor, it's easy enough to find the forms on California court sites, and some (sites) have sketchy details to assist in filling them out (the court probate examiner informed me the most common cause of delays in an individual probate case is due to improperly filled out forms). But even this relatively simple step requires you have an understanding of how the civil court system works; something I am fairly certain too few people have (myself included). Not only does this book familiarize you with the court system and its procedures (a rewarding learning experience in its own right), as well as gameplan the (typical) entire probate process but shows in explicit detail how to fill out every line of every form you'll most likely need.
None of this is to say probate is easy - I have not found mine to be and the estate was relatively simple. DIY probate is a lot of (detail/organizational) work. But I believe a large amount of the work involved for the first-time DIYer is due to unfamiliarity with the law, court procedures and its paperwork. Reading the book gave me the confidence that even so, I could do it myself and consult with an attorney on occasion rather than just washing my hands of it (and a pile of cash) by turning probate over to an attorney at the outset.
I was fortunate in that my probate case was relatively straightforward to be handled as it was. But even if it weren't, you MUST arm yourself with information of this nature if you're considering hiring an attorney. Get that information in one topical, detailed and pleasant-reading book.

Be your own lawyer

When you probate an estate yourself, you're your own lawyer. Fortunately Nissley, et al, and the State of California have made this possible for typical small family estates. Working through our own actual situation, with the help of this book, provided a much-needed education about what to do and what not to do in planning my own estate matters. What the book doesn't address is the difficulty the Executor or representative faces in managing through the attitudes, complaints and opinions of the others affected by the death of a loved one.
This edition seems to have been edited piecemeal to keep up with changing laws and tax matters, and some of the references within the book are incorrect. But my main objection is the unhappy practice in the book of requiring the reader to keep referring to other sections of the book to complete a form or prepare for a filing.

This is THE Book To Have

Nolo Press, the publisher, has hits and misses. This book is a direct hit, surpassing any and all other books of its kind. It allows for an overview, but also provides substantial detail, providing copious forms and examples for illustration and assistance. The book is addressed to the market in California, and all the forms and Probate Code citations relate to California, but even residents of other States will find a wealth of information and suggestions to consider. The book may seem pricey compared to others of its kind, but the others are a waste of money set next this resource. If you're going to be involved in the administration of an estate, and intend to do your best, let this great guide help you do it.

About the Author

Gayle H. Gregory is first and foremost a teacher, having experienced teaching and learning in elementary, middle, and secondary schools, community colleges, and universities. She has had extensive district-wide experience as a curriculum consultant and staff development coordinator. Gayle was principal/course director at York University for the Faculty of Education, teaching in the teacher education program.
Her areas of expertise include brain-compatible learning, differentiated instructional and assessment strategies, block scheduling, emotional intelligence, student motivation, RTI Tier One, collaborative learning, common core, renewal of secondary schools, enhancing teacher quality, coaching and mentoring, managing change, and building professional learning communities. She also a trainer for Visible Learning Plus with Corwin.

She is an author of numerous books related to educational neuroscience and differentiated instruction, assessment, and curriculum, including the following titles:

Amy Burkman is an Associate Professor at American Public University. She has served as a provider of professional development for the Education Service Center for Region 11 and several school districts within the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex. Burkman received a Master's Degree in Library Sciences from Texas Woman's University in 2002, where she was also inducted in Beta Phi Mu, the International Library & Information Studies Honor Society. She was awarded her doctorate from Texas Christian University in May 2009.

Burkman is, and has been, active in many local, state, and national organizations. She currently reviews materials for several publications, including the International Journal of Educational Leadership Preparation (IJELP) and the Education Leadership Review (ELR). Dr. Burkman has published several articles, including “A Practical Approach to Marketing the School Library”, which has been included in the 6th Edition of School Library Management, “The Role of Social, Civic and Political Responsibility in Educational Leadership Preparation”, and “Leadership Development in the United States: Systemic Development Within Social Culture.”

Dr. Burkman served as an elementary principal, an elementary and secondary assistant principal, a school librarian and a classroom teacher before she moved to higher education.

This time last year I was a brand new school board member thinking I knew it all. I like to be thorough, so I bought How NOT to be a Terrible School Board Member just to be sure I was doing things correctly. I wasn't. It's a whole different world from the inside and this book, written by a former school board member, gives real-life examples of the kinds of mistakes well-intentioned school board members make. It was a valuable read that I have kept on my Kindle carousel for quick resource. It is a quick read and its use of humor and non-educationalese makes it very worthwhile. Buy it!

About the Author
Jeffrey Ian Ross, Ph.D. is an Professor, School of Criminal Justice, and a Research Fellow at the Center for Comparative and International Law at the University of Baltimore. He has conducted research, written, and lectured on national security, political violence, political crime, policing, and corrections for over fifteen years. His work has appeared in many academic journals and books, as well as articles in popular magazines. He is the author of Making News of Police Violence (Praeger, 2000), co-author (with Stephen C. Richards) of Behind Bars: Surviving Prison (Macmillan, 2002), editor of Controlling State Crime (2nd Ed.) Transaction Books, 2000), Violence in Canada: Sociopolitical Perspectives (Oxford University Press, 1995), Cutting The Edge: Current Perspectives in Radical/Critical Criminology and Criminal Justice (Praeger, 1998), Varieties of State Crime and its Control (Criminal Justice Press, 1999), and the coeditor (with Stephen C. Richards) of Convict Criminology (Wadsworth, 2002). In 1986 Ross was the lead expert witness for the Senate of Canada's Special Committee on Terrorism and Public Safety. He received his Ph.D. in Political Science from the University of Colorado and was a Social Science Analyst with the National Institute of Justice, a division of the U.S. Department of Justice before coming to the University of Baltimore.
