About the Author

Lyn Richards has a highly unusual range of relationships with qualitative research.  After undergraduate training as a Historian and Political Scientist, she moved to Sociology. Her early work as a family sociologist addressed both popular and academic audiences, with a strong motivation always to make the funded research relevant to the people studied, and the qualitative analysis credible to those affected. Each of her four books in family sociology was a text at university level but also widely discussed in popular media and at community level. During her tenure as Reader and Associate Professor at La Trobe University in Melbourne, she won major research grants, presented and published research papers, was a founding member of a qualitative research association and taught qualitative methods at undergraduate and graduate level, supervising Masters and PhD students.

 

She strayed from this academic pathway when challenges with handling qualitative data in her family and community studies led to the development, with Tom Richards, of what rapidly became the world’s leading qualitative analysis software. They left the university to found a research software company, in which for a decade Lyn was Director of Research Services, writing software documentation  and managing international teaching of the methods behind the software.  Designing and documenting software taught her to confront fuzzy thinking about methods, and to demand straight talking, clarity of purpose, detail of technique and a clear answer always to “Why would we want to do that?”  Teaching methods to thousands of researchers in dozens of disciplines in 14 countries, she learned what worked and what didn’t. From those researchers, graduates and faculty in universities and research practitioners in the world beyond, she learned their many ways of handling data, on and off computers, and their strategies for making sense of data. 

 

Handling Qualitative Data is a direct result of this experience.  It offers clear, practical advice for researchers approaching qualitative research and wishing to do justice to rich data.  Like her previous book, with Janice Morse, Readme First, for a user’s guide to qualitative methods it strongly maintains the requirements of good qualitative research, assumes and critiques the use of software and draws on practical work, helping researchers whose progress has been hindered by  confusion, lack of training, mixed messages about standards and fear of being overwhelmed by rich,  messy data.

 

Throughout this hybrid career, Lyn continued contributions to critical reflection on new methods, as a writer and a keynote speaker in a wide range of international conferences. She has life membership of the International Sociological Association and its Methodology section. Her writing aims always to cut through barriers to high quality qualitative research and to assist researchers and teachers in making the inevitable shift to computing whilst maximizing the benefits for their research processes and outcomes.   On leaving software development, she took an Adjunct Professorship at RMIT University where she is now Associate Research Fellow of the Centre for Applied Social Research (CASR) and coordinates an active, informal and splendidly supportive qualitative research network group.

Janice M. Morse, PhD (Nurs), PhD (Anthro), FAAN is a professor and Presidential Endowed Chair at the University of Utah College of Nursing, and Professor Emeritus, University of Alberta, Canada., from 1991-1996, she also held a position as professor at The Pennsylvania State University. From 1997-2007, she was the founding Director and Scientific Director of the International Institute for Qualitative Methodology, University of Alberta, founding editor for the International Journal of Qualitative Methods, and Editor of the Qual Press monograph series. She remains the founding editor for Qualitative Health Research, (now in Volume 2, Sage1), is currently editor for the monograph series Developing Qualitative Inquiry, and The Essentials of Qualitative Inquiry (Left Coast Press). Her research programs are in the areas of suffering and comforting, preventing patient falls, and developing qualitative methods. In 2011, she was awarded the Lifetime Achievement in Qualitative Inquiry from the International Center for Qualitative Inquiry, was an inaugural inductee into the Sigma Theta Tau International Nurse Researcher Hall of Fame (2010), the 5th recipient of the Episteme Award (also Sigma Theta Tau). She received awarded honorary doctorates from the University of Newcastle (Australia) and Athabasca University (Canada). She is the author of 460 articles and chapters and 19 books on qualitative research methods, suffering, comforting and patient falls.

About the Author
Ann Dillon earned a B.S. in Education from Duquesne University, a M.Ed. from Slippery Rock University, and a J.D. with Distinction from St. Mary's University. She served as Articles Editor for the St. Mary's Law Journal and an author for the Council of School Attorneys' Journal. She is a member of Phi Delta Phi, Order of Barristers, and the John M. Harlan Society. She has also been a speaker at the Texas Community College Teachers Association (TCCTA), National Association for Developmental Education (NADE), and the College Reading & Learning Association (CRLA) Conferences, as well as presenting in service training workshops. She has taught developmental education courses at Community College of Allegheny County and Austin Community College, where she is a member of the Developmental Communications faculty and has taught government and effective learning courses in addition to study skills, vocabulary and reading.

About the Author
Ana Martinez-Lage received her Ph.D. in Spanish Applied Linguistics and Second Language Acquisition from The Pennsylvania State University. She is currently teaching at Middlebury College in the green hills of Vermont.

John R. Gutierrez received his Ph.D. in Romance Languages from the University of New Mexico and is now Croft Professor of Spanish at the University of Mississippi.

About the Author

Neil J. Salkind received his PhD from the University of Maryland in Human Development, and after teaching for 35 years at the University of Kansas, he remains as a Professor Emeritus in the Department of Psychology and Research in Education, where he continues to collaborate with colleagues and work with students. His early interests were in the area of children’s cognitive development, and after research in the areas of cognitive style and (what was then known as) hyperactivity, he was a postdoctoral fellow at the University of North Carolina’s Bush Center for Child and Family Policy. His work then changed direction and the focus was on child and family policy, specifically the impact of alternative forms of public support on various child and family outcomes. He has delivered more than 150 professional papers and presentations; written more than 100 trade and textbooks; and is the author of Statistics for People Who (Think They) Hate Statistics (Sage), Theories of Human Development (Sage), and Exploring Research (Prentice Hall). He has edited several encyclopedias, including the Encyclopedia of Human Development, the Encyclopedia of Measurement and Statistics, and the recently published Encyclopedia of Research Design. Very helpful BUT....

This book was great at explaining the principles behind the math. However-- THERE WERE HUGE MISTAKES!!! The formula for the correlation coefficient for example, had a misplaced parenthetical that changed the formula. As a rookie in this area I was in tears trying to figure out my homework. This was not the only error, but it certainly was the worst!!!
Otherwise, the examples make it easy to understand the concepts of statistics, and certainly made it so I was able to ace the course. I just wish it hadn't had so many errors.

At last...a book that students can follow!

This is an easy to follow, well written book that students find useful. I have used it for teaching undergraduate research and statistics and as a supplement for graduate level research. It is written on a level so that almost all students can follow it and it provides excellent examples.

Conceptually deficient
By not a natural
I used an earlier version of this text in teaching an introductory statistics class. While I laud the author for trying to introduce statistical concepts and computer software conventions in the same introductory level text, I think he tries to do too much. As a result, statistical concepts are trivialized. Students may learn to compute, but they have little understanding of the meaning of their computations.

At one time or another, I think that all of us who teach courses in statistics or research methods have been too quick to send our students to the computer without being sure that they first understand the conceptual foundations of the work we assign. It's a mistake that I've made and, in retrospect, the results were predictable: students are able to employ user-friendly software to compute a variety of measures, but they lack the ability to interpret what they've done. Furthermore if students are given a data set and asked to respond to specific questions, they have difficulty deciding which measures to use.

Retrograde though it may seem, I think computer applications should be delayed until a second course. This enables the instructor to focus on concepts in a first course. Moreover, actually solving carefully selected problems using nothing more than a pocket calculator seems to further enhance students' appreciation of the conceptual underpinnings of applied statistics and improves their ability to interpret their results.

About the Author

Kenneth D. Moore (EdD, Curriculum and Instruction, University of Houston) has been involved in teacher education for more than 35 years. During his tenure in higher education he served as Dean of Teacher Education for 12 years and worked closely with school administrators, classroom teachers, student teachers, and teacher education candidates. Dr. Moore has authored four books, numerous journal publications, an ERIC monograph, and has presented many papers at regional and national conventions. He has also served as Director of the Southwest Regional Association of Teachers of Science, President of the Oklahoma Association of Teacher Educators, President of the Oklahoma Association of Colleges for Teacher Education, and President of the Arkansas Association of Colleges for Teacher Education. He is a past member of the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE) Board of Examiners (BOE).

About the Author
Joseph Matthews has been an attorney since 1971, and from 1975 to 1977 he taught at the law school of the University of California, Berkeley. He has for many years been involved in matters relating to seniors, and is the author of Social Security, Medicare & Government Pensions and Long Term Care: How to Plan & Play for It, as well as How to Win Your Personal Injury Claim.

$100,000 Policy Boating Accident

I had a boating accident (I was a passenger) in 2001. I heard terrible stories from people who had hired lawyers and ended up with nothing. I bought this book and after 2 years of medical procedures & appointments, when I was done, I composed a letter requesting $85,000 from the insurance company (who had already been paying all my medical bills), State Farm. The policy was for $100,000 and the boat owner had only made one month's payment. I figured I would negotiate down to $65,000 minimum. I reasoned that if I ended up having to get a lawyer, I would ask for the $100,000 and end up with $66,000 (lawyer would get 30 percent). With my letter, documentation and before, during and after pictures, State Farm ended up awarding me $90,000. $5,000 more than I had requested. I highly recommend this book, but you must be thorough and patient. It's a lot of "legwork". A lot of research and stuff, but who knows your "pain and suffering" better than you. Certainly not a lawyer!!! The money is gone, but I used it to keep my paralyzed 83 year old mom at home with a caregiver until she passed away!

By far the best book investment I've ever made

I injured my shoulder in a cycling accident a couple years ago. My husband and I did not want to take the injury to court, so he did some research and found this book. We had never heard of it, but thought for the less than $30 cost, it was worth a shot. It turned out to be the best book investment ever! Because of what we learned through this book, the insurance company more than doubled their settlement offer to us!! I recommend having this book on hand, so that when you DO have an injury you can begin following the steps immediately. We found the book a couple months after we had already began the negotiating process, so there were a couple things we had done incorrectly according to the book. Regardless, as soon as we received the book, we began following its steps and it led to a healthy settlement for us. I cannot more highly recommend this book. It's also easy to read and understand.

This is the book to buy!

I would recommend you buy this book which is published by Nolo Press, which is probably the most prominent self-help legal publisher. It is a very good overview and covers alot. If you had to buy one book only, this is it.

I had also bought "Car Accident Secrets" which is written by an insurance "insider". I don't really recommend it. It only provided general/basic info. which is covered by Joseph Matthew's book. Good luck.
