About the Author
Joseph F. Healey is Professor Emeritus of Sociology at Christopher Newport University in Virginia. He received his PhD in sociology and anthropology from the University of Virginia. An innovative and experienced teacher of numerous race and ethnicity courses, he has written articles on minority groups, the sociology of sport, social movements, and violence, and he is also the author of Statistics: A Tool for Social Research (10th ed., 2014).

Excellent book

I ordered this book for a college course, but I feel it would be useful and thought-provoking even outside of an academic setting. This is one textbook that is well worth reading from cover to cover. Healey writes in such a way that is both easy to read and comprehend, yet full of a wealth of information. This book has sparked my interest in Sociology, and even though I'm a Psychology major, I will definitely be taking more Sociology courses! I am glad I chose to purchase instead of rent this book, because it may prove to be a useful reference in future college classes.

Great book. Healy obviously researched his material and was not afraid to write some unflattering truths. Worth the money. You will reference this material many times as you continue your college career. Kudos to Mr. Healy!

Good choice by the instructor

Even though the chapters are pretty long, they are easy to go through and understand. I got the book for my Race, Ethnicity and Diversity class, and my professor makes a pretty good job at discussing each chapter in class. At the beginning of each chapter there are real life stories to introduce the subject and it is a great way to catch the readers attention from the beginning.

If your writing job descriptions...

I used this book while hiring for a small retail startup that incorporated six different storefronts into the same business. I've got to say that if you are writing job descriptions, then definitely check this out. This is a tiny investment for your company to make to help get the best people and keep things legal.

We certainly had great success with our 'hires.'

I'm also a bit of a Nolo press fan boy, I'll admit, and having a full HR department with trained staff would be nice, but for the small company this is well worth the price.

About the Author
Born in Kingston, Jamaica West Indies, Anthony C. Winkler was educated in Jamaica at Excelsior College, Mount Alvernia Academy, and Cornwall College, the last two being in Montego Bay. He was also educated at Citrus Community College, Glendora, California. Winkler taught briefly at Pasadena City College and for a year at Moneague Teachers College in Saint Anne, Jamaica, an experience chronicled in GOING HOME TO TEACH (1995). From 1968 to 1975 Winkler had sales territories as a bookman for Appleton Century Crofts textbook publishers, and later for Scott, Foresman. In 1969 he decided he could write textbooks as well as anyone and through a chance meeting with the sales representative of another company, he submitted the manuscript POETRY AS SYSTEM and was offered a contract for its publication. Eventually, he met Jo Ray McCuen-Metherell and the two became textbook writers and collaborators. Over the years they have produced more than a dozen textbooks, most on rhetoric and writing. In addition to Winkler's textbooks, his body of work includes, among other books: THE PAINTED CANOE (novel, 1983); THE LUNATIC (novel, 1987); THE GREAT YACHT RACE (novel, 1992); DOG WAR (novel, 2006); TRUST THE DARKNESS: MY LIFE AS A WRITER (autobiography, 2008); THE BURGLARY (play, premiered in Toronto in 2005); THE LUNATIC (movie, filmed in 1991); THE ANNIHILATION OF FISH (movie, 1999); and BOB MARLEY, AN INTIMATE PORTRAIT BY HIS MOTHER (biography, 1996, with Cedella Booker).

Born in Belgium, the daughter of an American minister, Jo Ray McCuen-Metherell had moved from Brussels to Paris to Bern, Switzerland, by the time she was seven years old. In Bern, she attended the Freies Gymnasium and spoke not only fluent French and German but also English, which was the language spoken to her by her American parents. After enduring World War II, Jo Ray's parents sent her and her brother to Pacific Union College (in the Napa Valley), where Jo Ray received a B. A. in English. After teaching English and French in high school for several years, Jo Ray started to take night classes at the University of Southern California in order to earn an M.A. and Ph.D., which would allow her to teach in college. While working on her doctorate, she was first hired to teach English at Glendale Community College and later to serve as Dean of the Evening College. A chance meeting in 1973 with Anthony C. Winkler, a successful novelist, led to a literary partnership that has produced 15 coauthored textbooks used at colleges and universities across the United States.

Great for all writer

This book really helped me get an "A" on a research paper. Everything is laid out in easy to understand outline. There's a little to much history in the beginning. APA and MLA styles are great with may samples in clear and concise manner.

Too high level, too many inaccuracies

I returned this book not long after receiving it. It covers way too many subjects, and each subject is short and very high level. I primarily bought it for the APA reference but it turned out to be inaccurate in many areas. I bought the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association, Sixth Edition instead and I have used it a lot while writing papers. Buy more specific books instead of this general, expensive overview.

9 Money-Saving Tips for New Homeowners

October 27, 2008 Berkeley, CA--Today's economic climate can raise anxiety levels, especially for first-time homeowners. New homeowners probably passed stringent tests to qualify for a loan, and for many, cash reserves are at an all-time low. How can they enjoy their new nest without stressing out? Ilona Bray and Alayna Schroeder authors of The Essential Guide for First-Time Homeowners (Nolo; October 2008 ISBN 13: 978-1-4133-0895-2) offer nine helpful tips:

1. Improve for you, not for resale. You may have thought you'd be in your first home a few years, but find that dismal market conditions keep you in place. If you need to stay put longer than expected, improvements (like an extra bathroom or bedroom) can make the place more comfortable long term. But if you're justifying laying out cash for major home improvements with the idea that you'll recoup the cost when you sell, do some research first. Most home remodeling projects don't pay for themselves. You'll get the biggest resale boost from kitchen and bathroom remodels and front-yard landscaping.

2. Protect the environment, save money. By hanging your laundry out to dry, washing clothes in cold water, cleaning or replacing your furnace and air-conditioning filters, putting on a sweater and turning your thermostat down a degree or two in cold weather, and turning down the water heater (120° is warm enough for most people), you can both save a bundle and help the environment.

3. That housewarming party? Make it a potluck. Have everyone pitch in for a potluck, or try a cheaper, creative option: Serving afternoon high tea is easier on the pocketbook (and you!) than a dinner party with wine and grilled meat.

4. Prioritize your remodeling and decorating projects. Start with projects crucial to the house's structural integrity and your family's comfort; don't choose new carpeting over fixing a leaky roof (or leaks may ruin the new carpet!). And throw in a couple cheap "extras"--a can of paint and some decorative pillows won't cost you much, but can make the place seem so much more like home.

5. Save for big expenses. New homeowners often forget that annual property tax and insurance payments are on the horizon, usually at the beginning of the new year (unless these expenses were already worked into your mortgage payment). Create a savings goal that will cover such costs, then set aside a bit each month.

6. Figure regular maintenance costs into your monthly budget. Most homeowners need to spend 1% to 3% of their home's value for annual maintenance. Deferring maintenance in hard times can sometimes make things worse--and more expensive--later. For example, failing to deal with peeling exterior paint can lead to dry rot.

7. Enjoy the quest for low-cost home furnishings. Challenge yourself: Don't simply walk into a store and buy a house full of furniture. Try garage sales, thrift stores, and websites like Craigslist or eBay. Wood furniture tends to offer the best value, because it's easily cleaned and won't need reupholstering. For new items, bargain hunt, piece by piece, from online and local retailers.

8. Make the most of homeowner tax deductions. As a homeowner, you can now deduct the costs of mortgage interest (including points), private mortgage insurance premiums (PMI), mortgage prepayment and late payment penalties (but try to avoid these!), state and local property taxes, interest on a home improvement loan, and interest on home-equity debt (with certain dollar limits). Plus, now that you're itemizing, you can also take advantage of other deductions such as gifts to charity.

9. Get a refund on your homeowners' insurance premium. Even if you paid a whole year's premium when you bought your house, you can make changes to your policy and get either a refund or a reduction of your payments midyear. For example, you might qualify for a discount if you add a security system and fire alarm, deadbolt locks, or (depending on where you live) hurricane-resistant shutters. While you're at it, tell your car insurer about your change of address--if it's in a zip code with a lower crime rate, that premium might go down, too.

Useful but superficial

This is not so much an "Essential Guide" as it is a collection of mostly-useful tips, diluted with a lot of cute fluff. For example, there is a chapter with lots of bullet point lists for handling disputes with neighbors, along with a cookie recipe so you can "Woo the Neighbors With These Chocolate-Filled Cookies".

The book tries to cover too many subjects (home maintenance, real estate finance, neighbor law, etc.) and ends up with insufficient detail. The chapter on home maintenance contains a brief schedule of things to check in each month, but what is a first-time homeowner going to get out of the recommendation to "Test the pressure and temperature valve on your water heater by opening it and allowing some water to flow out"? As with most of the tips, a bit more detail telling the reader how to do this would make the advice useful instead of just nagging.

Most of the tips are helpful if incomplete, and most first-time homeowners would benefit from skimming this book. But the book should not be considered a substitute for a real reference on any of the subjects it covers.

Useful book

I'm not a first time homebuyer, but I have 3 children who will be soon.

This book has a lot of good information for first timers. Like knowing when you move in where your main shut offs are - gas, water, electric, etc.

In some important areas not enough detail & specifics, i.e. financing, insurance, home inspections. Of course this should have been researched prior to purchase.

The author talks alot about home maintenance & upgrading. Before making any decisions on energy saving changes - "get an energy audit. A professional will perform several tests and assess your current energy use. There will be some upfront costs - usually $100. to $200 - and your utility company may even offer these services or subsidize payment to an independent auditor, if you ask. In any case, the audit may discover easily correctible problems. Other parts of the book didn't seem revelent, i.e. hybrid cars & organic gardening. Other books cover this type of information in much more detail.

Some very helpful information, but some annoying weaknesses, too.

I struggled with the star rating for this book--whether to give it 3 or 4 stars--because, while it was helpful and informative for me personally as a first-time homeowner, it had some pretty substantial weaknesses that reduced its overall usefulness and increased my frustration while reading it:

1. Being tied in with USA Today, the book constantly uses that newspaper as source material. This would not really be a problem except that the book was published in October 2008 and includes references to articles in USA Today that are, in some cases, already several years old. This doesn't seem a wise decision, especially with the changes going on in the home market.

2. The book uses many USA Today graphs and charts; again, this would not be a problem in itself, but these graphs and charts often have little or no relation to what is being discussed on the page and rarely add much (if any) value to what is being discussed. Examples include a pie chart on "Who has the best yard in the neighborhood?" in a discussion on "Getting neighbor buy-in on your remodel plans," a graph on "Number of states with the same official tree" in a discussion on "Tree laws," and a graph on "Most common items boaters have lost overboard" in a discussion on homeowner's insurance. Is this information we need to know as first-time owners? Is this information adding any value to my reading of this book? My answer is no.

3. Since this book is written at a very basic level (you could almost call it "First-Time Homeowning for Dummies), I found it annoying that it would give you a great tip, but stop short in explaining what it means or how to do it. Even a throwaway sentence referring the homeowner to the appliance owner's manual, for example, would be better than setting up a great tip on appliance maintenance and then stopping short of explaining how to do it.

The book covers some great subjects--I especially appreciated the chapters on maintenance, tax breaks and insurance issues. I even learned a lot reading about some issues that don't affect me because I'm a condo owner vs. a single-family-home owner--like property lines, trees and fences.

I am a rarity in that I bought my first home at the age of 55. In fact, my first home was actually my retirement home! I was woefully under-educated as a home buyer and homeowner, despite the fact that I'd taken a class or two on shopping for and buying a home in the year before I bought my home. As a result, this book is a great asset to me as a reference tool to maintaining my home properly, getting the tax breaks I'm qualified for, etc. I really wanted to rate the book higher, but the issues listed above annoyed me enough that I felt it was only fair to potential buyers that I be completely honest about its weaknesses.

Rich Stim is a graduate of the University of San Francisco School of Law where he studied intellectual property law. He practices law in San Francisco, specializing in intellectual property and licensing and is an adjunct professor at San Francisco State University. He is the author of Music Law: How to Run Your Band's Business, License Your Invention and Getting Permission: How to License and Clear Copyrighted Materials Online & Off (all published by Nolo); as well as Intellectual Property: Patents, Trademarks & Copyrights (West).

MAKES IT EASY!

Can't see enough good things about this book. Extremely useful and very readable. The author takes you step by step through the permissions process for all kinds of things. I especially like the practical advice on how to avoid or at least minimize licensing fees. The section on music samples answers a lot of questions and makes this book a must for people who do that sort of thing. The chapter on website permission should prevent anyone from getting (forgive me) tangled in lawsuit. As usual with NOLO, there are forms you can use at the back and also on a disk. HOW MUCH EASIER CAN IT GET? Great index too. This is THE book on the subject. If you have any questions about whether you can use something-- buy this book first. It'll save you headaches later.

Great Reference!

There is a lot of information in this book, lots to read and it is very in depth on the subject of copyrighted materials. What is very convenient is that the book includes a CD which has all of the forms that you will need to seek permission for various copyrighted materials. There are few books out there that will answer so many topics related to this subject in the detail that it does.

Regardless of whether you use the Internet or do traditional publishing work, you need to know how to get permission to use the work of others. On the Internet this increasingly important in view of the issues surrounding deep linking and related challenges in a world where a simple HTML tag to someone else's work can bring legal problems. This book provides expert guidance that covers how to obtain permission, copyright research, what constitutes fair use, and how to legally use trademarks.

About the Author

Ann Majchrzak (PhD, Social Psychology, UCLA, 1980) is a Professor of Information and Operations Management at the Marshall School of Business, University of Southern California. She has been doing policy research since 1980 for U.S. government agencies, large and small non-profits, and corporations. She also does research in her specific discipline of organizational and technological innovation, including studies on knowledge sharing, innovation, distributed cognition, emergent groups, virtual collaboration, collaboration in high-secure volatile environments, emergency response, and innovation challenges. Her publications include such books as The Human Side of Factory Automation (Sage), articles in such journals as Organization Science, Information Systems Research, IEEE Transactions on Engineering Management, Management Science, MIS Quarterly, Harvard Business Review, and Sloan Management Review and numerous book chapters and presentations to industry, government, and academics She has served on 3 National Academy of Sciences Committees and is a senior editor for Organization Science and MIS Quarterly. M. Lynne Markus (PhD, Organizational Behavior, Case Western Reserve University, 1979) is The John W. Poduska, Sr. Professor of Information and Process Management at Bentley University and a Research Affiliate at MIT Sloan’s Center for Information Systems Research. She does practice-oriented research for businesses, associations and non-profits, and governments. Her specific areas of academic and practice-oriented research include: the effective design, implementation and use of information systems within and across organizations; the risks and unintended consequences of information technology use; and innovations in the governance and management of information technology. She has received several research grants from the US National Science Foundation and recently summarized her research on the role of IT in the mortgage crisis at a Securities and Exchange Commission roundtable. Her publications include several books and over 100 articles in journals such as MIS Quarterly, Information Systems Research, and Organization Science. She served as a senior editor for MIS Quarterly. She was named a Fellow of the Association for Information Systems in 2004. Excellent book

I have used this in a masters level class in public policy research methods, where the native language is not English. Useful, I thought, to the point, covers sophisticated theories with a few clear paragraphs, provides useful tables and references. I still think it is excellent for public policy advocacy (not more scholarly objectives). However, my non-native English speaking students have not read it. Whether it is the small type, the insistence on its own instrument of analysis (Policy Wheels), or, indeed, its very excellence, the use of precise language and emphasis on evidence-based arguments, this book has not had the impact I sought. They don't read it, although it is exactly what is required.
