About the Author
Doskow is a practicing attorney and mediator who has worked with families in the Bay Area for more than 15 years. She specializes in family law, including adoption, parentage issues, domestic partnership formation and dissolution, and divorce. She is a graduate of the Boalt Hall School of Law at the University of California at Berkeley.

Good Divorce Overview

This book is what I expected from Nolo: good, concise information about divorce without delving into a ton of detail about any one topic. I would give it four and half stars if that was possible. My only criticism was that I found that it fell short when it comes to the particular requirements of certain states. I am a California resident, and I simply needed more information about community property law and how the process works here. Having said that, Emily Doskow is a very good writer, and she makes it all quite digestible.
As I noted in another book review, if I had to pick two books for California residents to read, this would be one of them. The other book would be Divorce for Grownups: A Comprehensive Guide to Divorce in California by David Magnuson. While Nolo's general approach to divorce in the United States is helpful, I wanted more information about the process I face in California and the particular laws of my state. The author of Divorce for Grownups closed that gap for me. To summarize, I recommend that readers who live in California considering purchasing both books. One is a good general primer. The other is a helpful guide to divorcing in California.

Excellent reference book, unpleasant subject

Amicable or not, divorce is an unpleasant experience. NOLO's book is a wonderful reference for people to use in the legal system, if only to become familiar with the terminology and legalese. It also assists people in realizing how many paths and choices there are in divorce. These paths can be emotional, social, financial, or none/all of the above. The best advice given is to try mediation before anything else. Divorce is an expensive choice, for anyone involved, as well as painful. While this resource is excellent in providing information and references, everyone's situation is different.
It's an excellent book to have if you and your partner are considering divorce and don't want it to be acrimonious - and it offers online updates, directories, and dictionaries.

A Good Primer for Those in the Midst of a Divorce

This book is a valuable resource. I used the second edition when my divorce process started, and this third edition is even more valuable since it brings up-to-date the laws and circumstances of divorce in America. It is an essential reference for anyone in the midst of divorce or contemplating one.
There are several key aspects of divorce that everyone must consider, and "Nolo's Essential Guide to Divorce" treats each of them. The two most significant aspects, always, is how to deal with custody and visitation for children and how to equitably distribute property acquired jointly. These may be contentious issues or ones where the couple works together to arrive at a reasonable settlement. Recommendations for how to do all of this are present everywhere in the book as well as sidebars giving specific cases studies.
The author always recommends collaborative dissolution of the marriage and the division of assets, and an approach for raising the children that takes their wellbeing as the central issue. This guide also recommends as the least contentious and most expeditious and cheapest manner of handling a divorce a form of mediation rather than litigation. It explains how to do this, as well as other options, in relatively straightforward and easily accessible language, a real plus for a legal work. Finally, the work recommends moving through the divorce process as quickly as possible with a minimum of rancor. Taking the high road is a constant theme in working through this process.
