About the Author
Brian V. Carolan is Associate Professor of Quantitative Research Methods at Montclair State University. Prior to joining Montclair State University in 2010, he was Associate Professor of Social Foundations of Education in the Department of Education, College of Staten Island, CUNY. He received his B.A. in sociology from Rutgers University, M.Phil in sociology from Columbia University, and his Ph.D. in sociology and education from Teachers College, Columbia University. Brian has published widely in a variety of areas related to education, covering issues such as high school size, grade span configuration, and the social organization of classrooms. This diversity of topical interests reflects his desire to employ methodological strategies from different disciplines to examine phenomena that are of interest to educational stakeholders. Consequently, his work has appeared in diverse outlets, including Social Networks, Educational Researcher, Teachers College Record, Journal of Research on Adolescence, and others. He currently teaches graduate-level research methods courses to students in the educational and health services fields.

About the Author
The late Peter Ladefoged, preeminent phonetician, founded the UCLA Phonetics Laboratory and was its director from 1962 to 1991. He received his Ph.D. from the University of Edinburgh, Scotland, in 1959. His major research interests included experimental phonetics and describing the sounds of the world's languages; his ground-breaking fieldwork took him to Europe, Africa, India, Australia, China, and elsewhere to record many languages. He was a member of many professional organizations and president of a few, including the International Phonetic Association (1986-1991) and the Linguistic Society of America (1980). He wrote extensively and was awarded many professional honors.

Must-have for Linguistics students

"A Course in Phonetics" is the best book available on introductory Phonetics, and I recommend it whole-heartedly for every Linguistics student, but not necessarily for those with a general interest in Linguistics and languages. What I found to be especially useful are the sections of exercises at the end of each chapter to test what you've learned. The exercises are very well designed; however, the one drawback is that the book contains no answer key (that can only be found in the professor's copy).

The sections on Articulatory Phonetics (how our mouths, teeth, and tongues interact to make sounds) and Phonetic transcription,which uses current standard IPA symbols,are particularly good. On that note, what I find lacking in the book is coverage of languages other than English. If you're interested in further information on transcribing in IPA in 29 major languages, I strongly recommend "Handbook of the International Phonetic Association: A Guide to the Use of the I!nternational Phonetic Alphabet." Also, the section on Acoustic Phonetics was a bit overwhelming for anyone in my class who didn't have any background in Physics.

Still, the book's strength is the depth it goes into, taking into account that this is an introductory book. Every major concept in Phonetics is touched upon, and Ladefoged makes particularly good use of tables and diagrammes to help the reader.

(Note 7/2001: When I wrote this review, this was the most current edition. However, the 5th edition was published in 2000, and I haven't reviewed that yet, but you might want to check it out.)

Best Available for the Beginner

Phonetics is a notoriously technical discipline, and most books on the subject will make the beginner's head spin. Ladefoged's "A Course in Phonetics" is not one of those books. I believe this is the best introductory book to phonetics available. It's easy to read and he doesn't overload the reader with lots of technical terms. He uses simple plain English to describe phenomena that takes other writers half a dictionary to describe. The concepts aren't watered down, so this is the perfect introduction to phonetics. If you're doing serious research into phonetics and you've already taken a course in phonetics, this may be a little basic for you, but I can recommend it to everyone else.

MAGNIFICENT

Peter Ladefoged's Course in Phonetics covers the so-called science of speech (according to Professor Higgins)in every respect. Unlike many other texts on the field, this is no only meant to describe the phonological system of a language in particular or give you some background on general phonetics. This book really teaches you to become a phonetician! This is not just because of Ladefoged's imcomparable background in phonetics and physics (what a great scientist!), but also because Ladeofged himself acts like a motivator as he passes his own passion to the readers.

The interactive CD is awesome. You will be able to listen to the XX century's leading English phonetician Daniel Jones making his own cardinal vowels. There is also an invaluable x-ray short movie of different articulations, and believe me! It is really illuminating to have the chance to see that rather than beautifully designed drawings. Ladefoged himself will teach you by dictating and pronouncing a great number of words, nonsense, English and other languages.

I really recommend this book to whoever is interested or passionate about this discipline. Even though Prof. Ladefoged is not here with us anymore, this is an excellent - and for many of us the only one - chance to be taught by one of the greatest.

Save Me over $3000 in Legal Fees

Chapter 13 Bankruptcy: Keep Your Property & Repay Debts Over Time

I needed to file Chapter 13 to pay off approximately $7000 in delinquent taxes that could not be discharged in a Chapter 7. I contacted several local Chapter 13 attorneys in the San Diego area for free consultations. Each one wanted to charge at least $3500.00 to represent me and wanted between $1000.00 to $1500.00 to be paid prior to them filing the bankruptcy paperwork with the court. If I had that kind of money, I would have been trying to work out something with the IRS.

I bought this book and read it cover to cover several times. When I knew I was ready, I completed the forms required to file in my district, California Southern District. My expense was $274.00 in cash for the filing fees. I filed on 4/17/09 and had my 341(a) hearing on 5/22/09. The court schedules a hearing at the same time for many people.

During the hearing, I was getting nervous as several people that were represented by attorneys were called in front of the Chapter 13 Trustee ahead of me and were either having their hearings continued to a new date or having a Confirmation hearing scheduled due to discrepancies in their filed paperwork (this was paperwork prepared and filed by their attorneys!!!). In the California Southern District, a 341(a)hearing is rescheduled or a Confirmation hearing is scheduled if the Chapter 13 Trustee thinks there is a presumption of abuse of the bankruptcy laws, objects to the plan or a creditor has an objection to the plan.

When I was called up, I only had to answer a few basic questions (name, address, what do you do you do for a living, how much are you paid, is that hourly, weekly, monthly and how many hours per day, week or month do you work) and provide copies of my IRS tax returns for 4 years (2005, 2006, 2007 and 2008)to verify that I have had stable income. The Chapter 13 Trustee stated he did not find a presumption of abuse, recommended that my plan be confirmed and is submitting the Request for Plan Confirmation to the Chapter 13 bankruptcy judge for sign-off. It took less than 10 minutes.

The author did a good job organizing the information in this book.
I would also recommend Surviving Financial Disasters by Tiffany R. Love which comes with a CD ROM and actual sample court documents from someone who has been there and done that. Also tells what to expect after you filed your papers.

About the Author
Zulma Iguina is a former senior lecturer in Spanish at Cornell University. Her academic background is in linguistics and literature, and she taught Spanish language at Cornell for more than 30 years. She worked intensively with novice teacher development while serving as coordinator for the elementary level, Spanish 121-122 for over a decade. She is the recipient of a Clark Award for Distinguished Teaching.

Eleanor Dozier is a former senior lecturer in Spanish at Cornell University. Her undergraduate and first graduate work were conducted at the University of Arizona, where she studied French and Spanish literature. She continued her doctoral studies at Cornell University and remains All But Dissertation in French literature. She taught French language for 12 years, and taught the Spanish language for 30 years. She served as the faculty fellow for the Language House in Spanish for several years, and for the academic year 1998-1999 co-directed the Cornell-Michigan-Penn Program in Seville. Dozier also has served as associate chair for Language Instruction for the Department of Romance Studies since the fall of 2000.

ok to buy used copies, no supplemental materials

As far as I can tell this is an excellent book. I gave it one star to call attention to two things.

1. WTF. This book is horrifically over-priced. It does not provide new access to engineering equations or a cure for cancer that was published last week. It is a Spanish grammar reference for crying out loud. I paid over $80.00 for it. Most of us are having to buy it as required for a college curriculum. Like the cost of the US medical system, this is one of those "something is wrong here" moments. That is just the painful truth.

2. It is a good idea to buy the used version of the edition you need. I did not. There were used versions available on Amazon for more than $20/less per copy, but when I went to buy, on checkout I found the used books had caveats, error messages, on the order of "Used version does not include online text key or supplemental materials."

Since in the past I had gotten stuck buying used textbooks and then finding out I was missing vital supplemental materials, I decided to play it safe and buy the new version. When I got my copy however, I found a that there are in fact no supplemental materials attached to this book. It is just a book. The caveats are meaningless, so you can get the whole package in a used version at a lower price. I suggest you do so.

With this, my own caveat rendered, I give this book back the rest of its stars, *****, for the hard work of its authors, who I doubt extremely are getting rich by the over-pricing of this book.

The Swiss Army Knife Spanish Grammar Manual

This book is a must for any serious Spanish Major/minor, graduate student, and even those who are interested in learning the intrinsic grammatical nuances of the Spanish language. From its inception to this 4th edition the book keeps demonstrating that it is on top of the game. The authors, having listened to their readers and students, implemented thorough yet simple down to earth explanation of grammar structures and usage. This book belongs on your shelf beside your Diccionario de la Real Academia Española, El diccionario de uso del español de María Moliner, and your MLA Handbook for Writers of Research Papers. The exercises and writing suggestions are current and should I dare say, fun? This is the book to own.

About the Author
Miguel E. Gallardo, PsyD: Associate Professor of Psychology at Pepperdine University's Graduate School of Education and Psychology, where he teaches courses on multicultural and social justice, intimate partner violence and professional practice issues. Dr. Gallardo is also licensed psychologist and maintains an independent/consultation practice where he conducts therapy with adolescents and adults. His areas of scholarship and research interests include understanding the psychotherapy process when working with ethnocultural communities, particularly the Latina/o community and in understanding the processes by which individuals develop cultural awareness and responsiveness. Dr. Gallardo has published referred journal articles and book chapters in the areas of Latina/o psychology, ethics and evidence-based practices. He co-edited the book, Intersections of Multiple Identities: A Casebook of Evidence-Based Practices with Diverse Populations published in 2009. Dr. Gallardo also conducts continuing education workshops and professional trainings in the areas of culturally responsive therapy with diverse communities, multicultural organizational development and Latina/o mental health throughout the state and country. Dr. Gallardo is past-president of the California Psychological Association (CPA). He is one of the founders and served as the first president of the California Latino Psychological Association and continues to serve on their board of directors. He has been honored for his dedication and commitment to the field of psychology locally, statewide and nationally. Dr. Gallardo is a Fellow of the American Psychological Association.

About the Author
Guerin, an editor/author specializing in employment law, is author or co-author of several Nolo books, including The Manager's Legal Handbook, Dealing with Problem Employees, Nolo's Essential Guide to Federal Employment Laws, Workplace Investigations, Create Your Own Employee Handbook, and Nolo's Guide to California Law. Guerin has practiced employment law in government, public interest, and private practice where she represented clients at all levels of state and federal courts and in agency proceedings. She is a graduate of Boalt Hall School of Law at the University of California at Berkeley.

Ms. DelPo is an author and consulting editor who specializes in employment and family law issues. She brings years of criminal and civil law experience to her work at Nolo, having litigated cases in all levels of state and federal courts, including the California Supreme Court and the United States Supreme Court. She has written numerous employment law titles, including The Performance Appraisal Handbook, Dealing with Problem Employees, and Create Your Own Employee Handbook. She is also the editor of Parent Savvy, a book that answers parents' practical, financial, and legal questions. This Guide Has it All

This is a complete kit for making your company's own employee handbook. There is legal information, state specific information, resources to follow for your specific needs, and then, the best part of all, there is CD that comes with this that has everything you need already typed for you. All you have to do is insert the CD and save the files, which are in MS Word, and voila - you have it. The only thing you have to do is decide which policies you want for your company, fill in a few blanks, change the TOC and you are ready to print it out! A very practical and easy way to create your own employee handbook! I was quite impressed.

Very helpful reference

I am very pleased with this book. I was placed in charge of writing an employee handbook for a small office and this book (and accompanying CD-ROM) made my job very easy. The CD-ROM allows you to easily cut and paste most of the general verbage of the handbook - and customize to your needs. It is also very helpful in educating on laws. I highly recommend this for anyone taking on the task of creating an employee handbook.

About the Author

Laura O'Dwyer (Ph.D., Boston College) is an Associate Professor in the Department of Educational Research, Measurement, and Evaluation in the Lynch School of Education at Boston College. She teaches courses in applied data analysis (basic to advanced topics), quantitative research methods, survey construction, and experimental design. O’Dwyer's research focuses on examining the impact of technology-based interventions on student and teacher outcomes, and on international comparative studies in education. She has conducted several studies that employ randomized experimental designs to examine educational interventions including the effects of online professional development on teaching practices and learning outcomes.

James Bernauer, Ed.D. is an Associate Professor in the school of Education and Social Science at Robert Morris University in Pittsburgh. He teaches qualitative and quantitative research methods at the masters and doctoral levels. He also teaches educational psychology to undergraduates. Bernauer’s research focuses primarily on instructional effectiveness, technology, and assessment in both pre-12 and higher education. He is particularly interested in exploring the integration of quantitative and qualitative approaches across phenomena.

We like the multi-cultural aspect of the reading passages, and the quality of the text/instruction which precedes the exercises in each chapter. Also, the progressive organization of the skills, building on earlier mastered skills is a plus. We also like the three levels of comprehension, particularly the last two chapters on affective comprehension, which most other reading texts don't even consider."

About the Author
Royce Adams was a faculty member at Santa Barbara City College for many years. He is the author of several best-selling reading and writing textbooks and is an active participant in the College Reading and Learning Association.

Do not buy!! Half of the pages in this book are blank! "Text not available due to copyright restrictions." The fact that all of my assignments are on the blank pages makes this book worse than useless.
