About the Author
Guerin, an editor/author specializing in employment law, is author or co-author of several Nolo books, including The Manager's Legal Handbook, Dealing with Problem Employees, Nolo's Essential Guide to Federal Employment Laws, Workplace Investigations, Create Your Own Employee Handbook, and Nolo's Guide to California Law. Guerin has practiced employment law in government, public interest, and private practice where she represented clients at all levels of state and federal courts and in agency proceedings. She is a graduate of Boalt Hall School of Law at the University of California at Berkeley.
Ms. DelPo is an author and consulting editor who specializes in employment and family law issues. She brings years of criminal and civil law experience to her work at Nolo, having litigated cases in all levels of state and federal courts, including the California Supreme Court and the United States Supreme Court. She has written numerous employment law titles, including The Performance Appraisal Handbook, Dealing with Problem Employees, and Create Your Own Employee Handbook. She is also the editor of Parent Savvy, a book that answers parents' practical, financial, and legal questions. Ms. DelPo currently divides her time between writing on legal issues and chasing after her two busy children, Sophia and Charlie. Ms. DelPo received her law degree with honors from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

Managers Desk Reference

This is an extensive review of personel management and how to do it right. If you are a manager and want to stay out of troule, read this. If you are an employee and want to know why your boss does some of the odd things they do, buy it and read it. If you are moving up the ladder and need education in management principles, buy the book. All angles are covered and are fully up to date. Nolo publishes valuable , trustworthy, legal information which is well written and accurate. This is a superb reference desktop guide for any manager's desk. It can also be used to build your own employee handbook, customized to your own needs. I highly recommend this guidebook.

Informative for both managers and employees

There are oftentimes periods during a person's career where water cooler conversations come up on subjects surrounding whether "such-and-such" actions by the company are legal, whether the employees would have a legitimate legal case if they decided to sue about "subject_01", and etc. The Manager's Legal Handbook is a great insight into the world of corporate employment legality. While the contents of this book will not ready you for a legal battle in a courtroom after reading, it will shed light on some of the more common scenarios that you might face in a day-to-day workplace environment.
The format is very easy to read and flows well from subject to subject, the only flaw of the written form is that you simply cannot condense employment laws into a small 500 page book. However as "crib notes" version, this book does remarkably well. There are notations which supply additional information for state-to-state specifics, but again, further research should be done in order to truly flesh out the laws which are earmarked.
This book is a great introduction into the world of Management legalities and would do well as an broad overview and for employees who are thinking about rising up through the management career path. For senior managers, this book should be a good refresher, but most of the information would probably be old news.

Great for HR practitioners to share with management with multistate requirements and growing companies

I am an HR executive who was intrigued with the offering of the Manager's Legal Handbook.
Working mostly in HR in California, I quickly got a lot of insight with great charts on comparisons and contrasts for many issues from state to state.
When I reviewed this product I felt it would be a good tool for HR to give out to new and existing managers to enhance their understanding of National HR issues having it at their fingertips.
The layout is great and very easy to follow. May even be useful to the new HR generalist or practitioner who wants to upgrade his or her skill level and understanding.
Again, what can I say, to have a tool that has most of the most important state by state laws, requirements and policies is truly amazing.
I can see this tool being handed out by HR and Training, so that managers with multistate responsibility can have quick access to information. Also, for the growing company, may be a good tool for helping to decide what other states to open operations in. Additionally, any manager working for a company working in many different states, will be able to understand the differences that other colocated direct reports have as differences.
