About the Author

Mary K. Stohr  is a Professor in the Department of Criminal Justice and Criminology at Washington State University. She received a PhD (1990) in political science, with specializations in criminal justice and public administration, from Washington State University. Many moons ago, and before she earned her graduate degrees, she worked as a correctional officer and then as a counselor in an adult male prison in Washington State. Professor Stohr has published over 80 academic works in the areas of correctional organizations and operation, correctional personnel, inmate needs and assessment, program evaluation, gender, and victimization. Her books, with others, include The American Prison (with Cullen and Jonson); Corrections: The Essentials (with Walsh); Correctional Assessment, Casework and Counseling (with Walsh); Corrections: A Text Reader (with Walsh and Hemmens); Criminal Justice Management: Theory and Practice in Justice Centered Organizations (with Collins); and The Prison Experience (with Hemmens). She is the Executive Director of the Academy of Criminal Justice Sciences, received the Founders Award from ACJS in 2009, and is a Co-Founder of the Corrections Section of ACJS.

Anthony Walsh, Professor of Criminology at Boise State University, received his PhD from Bowling Green State University at the ripe old age of 43. He has field experience in law enforcement and corrections. He is the author of over 150 journal articles/book chapters and 34 books, including Biology and Criminology (Routledge, 2009), Feminist Criminology Through a Biosocial Lens (Carolina Academic Press, 2011), Law, Justice, and Society (with Craig Hemmens, Oxford University Press, 2011), Correctional Assessment, Casework, and Counseling (with Mary K. Stohr, American Correctional Association, 2011), The Neurobiology of Criminal Behavior: Gene-Brain-Culture Interaction (with Jon Bolen, Ashgate, 2012), Corrections: The Essentials (with Mary K. Stohr, SAGE, 2012), The Science Wars: The Politics of Gender and Race (Transaction, 2013), Criminological Theory: Assessing Philosophical Assumptions (Anderson/Elsevier, 2014), Biosociology: Bridging the Biology-Sociology Divide (Transaction, 2014), and Criminology: The Essentials (Sage, 2015). His interests include the biosocial criminology, statistics, and criminal justice assessment and counseling.

Craig Hemmens is Department Chair and Professor in the Department of Criminal Justice and Criminology at Washington State University. In addition to being the editor for the SAGE Text/Reader Series in Criminology/Criminal Justice, he has published several books, including Law, Justice and Society (Oxford University Press, ©2012), Legal Guide for Police (Anderson, ©2011) and An Introduction to Criminal Evidence (Oxford University Press, ©2009). He holds a J.D. from North Carolina Central University School of Law and a Ph.D. in Criminal Justice from Sam Houston State University. He served as the President of the Association of Criminal Justice Sciences (ACJS) from 2012 to 2013.

The book is good. Gives good historical information for corrections. However, there is a need for more up to date and realistic information on some of the "out sourced" private corrections.

I used this text in the first edition for the "Punishment & Corrections" class I teach at a local college. It has relevant research articles at the end of each chapter - easier for the students to find articles for papers.

The bible of all English grammar...

I own an original paperback copy from the 70's. It was purchased to fine tune my proofreading skills, for a publishing house I worked for while attending college. The layout and style of the book is the most user-friendly that I've ever seen. When time is of the essence, and you need an answer quickly, this is your book. I pull it off my shelf every 5 years, to brush up on my punctuation. Geez, I hope I've nailed the punctuation in this paragraph... not sure so I guess it's time to pull out the book again.

Julia Nissley was Probate Administrator with the Los Angeles law firm of Silverberg, Rosen, Leon and Behr for many years. She is an honors graduate of the Attorney Assistant Training Program in Probate Administration at the University of California--Los Angeles School of Law, and a member of the California Association of Legal Document Assistants. Julia is a native Californian and enjoys playing tennis and riding trains with her husband, Ron. The author of How to Probate an Estate in California, Julia now operates her own form preparation service under the name Probate Direct, assisting consumers with all kinds of probate paperwork through the mail or in person.

Indispensable resource for do-it-yourself probate

I volunteered to do the probate process for my mother's estate. This book was absolutely essential. It gives clear, step-by-step instructions on each part of the probate process. However, do-it-yourself probate is not for the faint of heart. This is a major undertaking even with such an outstanding resource book. Be prepared to spend MANY, MANY hours. But, you will save buckets of money. I had the advantage of agreeable siblings and no conflicts over who got what or how much. Thank you, thank you, thank you Nolo Press.

Saved me a bundle

I had to transact a simple probate procedure. My trust lawyer said he could do it for me and charge $2K, but that the California Probate book would step me through the necessary steps and I could do it on my own. He was right. The book is very carefully indexed and it's easy to zero in on your particular circumstance and how to resolve it. Even if your situation is complex enough to require a lawyer, this book will help you understand your situation better and possibly avoid unnecessary fees and/or being taken to the cleaners.

Professor of English and Women's Studies at The Pennsylvania State University, Cheryl Glenn is widely known for her scholarship, leadership, and teaching. Besides authoring THE HARBRACE GUIDE TO WRITING and co-authoring THE HARBRACE HANDBOOKS, she is author of the prize-winning RHETORIC RETOLD: REGENDERING THE TRADITION FROM ANTIQUITY THROUGH THE RENAISSANCE; UNSPOKEN: A RHETORIC OF SILENCE; RHETORICAL EDUCATION IN AMERICA; and several other titles. Glenn's rhetorical scholarship has earned her many awards, including three National Endowment for the Humanities awards, the Conference on College Composition and Communication's Richard Braddock Award, Rhetoric Review's Outstanding Essay Award, and Best Book/Honorable Mention from the Society for the Study of Early Modern Women. She has served as President of the Coalition of Women Scholars in the History of Rhetoric and Composition, and is a member of the Conference on College Composition and Communication (CCCC) Executive Committee, Chair of the Modern Language Association (MLA) Division on the History and Theory of Rhetoric and Composition, and a member of the MLA Delegate Assembly. Glenn's teaching and scholarship have earned her three university teaching awards. About the Author

Celia B. Fisher, PhD, Director of the Fordham University Center for Ethics Education and the Marie Ward Doty University Chair and Professor of Psychology, served as Chair of the American Psychological Association’s (APA’s) Ethics Code Task Force responsible for the 2002 revision of the APA Ethical Principles of Psychologists and Code of Conduct that, with the addition of language on human rights amended in 2010, is today’s current code. She currently serves as Chair of the Ethics Code Task Force for the American Public Health Association and Director of the NIDA funded Fordham University HIV and Drug Abuse Prevention Research Ethics Institute.  She has served as Chair of the Environmental Protection Agency’s Human Subjects Research Board, the New York State Board for Licensure in Psychology, the National Task Force on Applied Developmental Science, and the Society for Research in Child Development (SRCD) Committee for Ethical Conduct in Child Development Research and the SRCD Common Rule Task Force. Dr. Fisher was also a member of the APA Ethics Committee, the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) Data Safety and Monitoring Board, the Institute of Medicine (IOM) Committee on Clinical Research Involving Children, the IOM Committee on Ethical Review and Oversight Issues in Research Involving Standard of Care Interventions, the National Academies’ Committee on Revisions to the Common Rule for the Protection of Human Subjects in Research in the Behavioral and Social Sciences, and the Department of Health and Human Services Secretary’s Advisory Committee on Human Research Protections (SACHRP), for which she co-chaired the SACHRP Subcommittee on Research Involving Children, and she is currently a member of the NIH Societal and Ethical Issues in Research Study Section. She also served as the founding director of the Fordham University Doctoral Program in Applied Developmental Psychology and cofounding editor of the journal Applied Developmental Science. She is the recipient of the 2010 Award for Excellence in Human Research Protection Life Time Achievement Award and a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science.

Dr. Fisher has written commissioned papers on research ethics with mentally impaired and vulnerable populations for President Clinton’s National Bioethics Advisory Commission, for NIMH on points for consideration in the ethical conduct of suicide research and research involving children and adolescents, and for the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) on HIV education, treatment, and referrals for research participants. She co-chaired the national conference on Research Ethics for Mental Health Science Involving Ethnic Minority Children and Youth (American Psychologist, December 2002) co-sponsored by the APA and NIMH, and the first National Conference on Graduate Education in Applied Developmental Science (Journal of Applied Developmental Psychology, 1993).

Dr. Fisher has coedited eight books and authored more than 150 scholarly chapters and empirical articles on cognitive and social development across the life span and on research and professional ethics with special emphasis on the rights of racial/ethnic minorities, sexual and gender minority youth, children and adults with impaired decision making, and socially marginalized populations. With support from the National Institute for Child Health and Human Development (NICHD), she has studied how to assess and enhance the abilities of adults with developmental disabilities to consent to research and is currently working on a project to develop research ethics training modules for American Indian and Native Alaskan community engaged researchers. With funding from the National Science Foundation (NSF) and the National Institutes of Health (NIH), she has developed research ethics instructional materials for undergraduates, graduate students, senior scientists, and institutional review boards. She has developed assessment instruments to evaluate how teenagers and parents from different racial/ethnic backgrounds prepare for and react to racial discrimination, examined the validity of child abuse assessment techniques in institutional and forensic settings, and, with support from the NSF, NIDA, and the National Center for Research Resources (NCRR), has partnered with culturally diverse community members and frontline researchers conducting community-based research to understand their perspectives on the ethics of adolescent risk research and research involving adults involved in street drug use and related HIV risk. With support from the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS) and the Office of Research Integrity, she has developed and validated measures assessing mentoring behaviors and departmental climates nurturing the responsible conduct of research in psychology graduate programs. Her research on intervention programs to reduce college students’ drinking behaviors has been supported by the Department of Education and the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA). She is also co-principle investigator on a National Institute for Minority Health Disparities grant on ethical issues in HIV research involving LGBT youth.

This is one book I haven't regretted in buying. A lot of information for you to truly understand the ethical codes by which professionals/students may work. As a doctoral candidate in psychology, I needed a book that I could use like a journal, and this book proved above and beyond. Am not only recommending this book to all psychology students (graduate and undergraduates) but to all interested in ETHICS. The author truly put in a lot of work into her book.

About the Author

Arlene Fink (PhD) is Professor of Medicine and Public Health at the University of California, Los Angeles, and president of the Langley Research Institute. Her main interests include evaluation and survey research and the conduct of research literature reviews as well as the evaluation of their quality. Dr. Fink has conducted scores of evaluation studies in public health, medicine, and education. She is on the faculty of UCLA’s Robert Wood Johnson Clinical Scholars Program and is a scientific and evaluation advisor to UCLA’s Gambling Studies and IMPACT (Improving Access, Counseling & Treatment for Californians with Prostate Cancer) programs. She consults nationally and internationally for agencies such as L’institut de Promotion del la Prévention Secondaire en Addictologie (IPPSA) in Paris, France, and Peninsula Health in Victoria, Australia. Professor Fink has taught and lectured extensively all over the world and is the author of more than 130 peer-reviewed articles and 15 textbooks.

About the Author
Patti J. Marinelli has had a distinguished career teaching Spanish at the University of South Carolina. The recipient of many university awards, she also was named Teacher of the Year by the South Carolina Foreign Language Teachers' Association in 2008. She has extensive experience coordinating the introductory Spanish program and mentoring graduate teaching assistants at the university. Marinelli has authored two other Spanish textbooks, including the best-selling high beginner textbook Puentes. Both her teaching and writing are informed by her experiences as a certified ACTFL OPI tester and her expertise in standards-based instruction.

Lizette Mujica Laughlin, a native of Cuba, is a graduate of the University of South Carolina, where she has been on the faculty for more than 20 years. She is an ACTFL-certified oral and writing proficiency tester/trainer in Spanish/English. Her proficiency training has played a pivotal role in her professional development, for example, as upper-level course coordinator at the University of South Carolina, author, and tester/trainer for ACTFL.

Not what I expected

First of all, I believe this workbook came with a CD which I didn't get with it. The work is aimed at a Spanish class and a lot of the work deals with other people in the class. Not appropriate for a class of two. So, it is not what I expected and not very interesting at all.

About the Author
Dieter Sevin, a native of Germany, was Professor of German at Vanderbilt University. He received grants from organizations such as the American Philosophical Association, American Council of Learned Societies, German Academic Exchange Service, and the Vanderbilt Research Council.

Ingrid Sevin, a native of Germany, has been teaching German and French at the high school and college level in the United States and in Germany for more than ten years. From 1987 to 2002, she was the editor of the German audio-magazine SCHAU INS LAND.
