    Useful Guide

    These days workplace harassment and discrimination is a big issue and there is plenty of litigation regarding instances of these things. I think we all know that unless you have been hiding somewhere. The thing is, a wise course to follow for any manager or HR person would be to take steps to ensure that procedures and regulations are implemented within your organization to prevent/discourage such harassment and discrimination and if it should occur, you also have procedures in place to effectively deal with it.

    I felt the Nolo guide is very helpful in this respect. It is laid out in a logical, organized manner and is written in an easy to understand manner. Plenty of examples are provided. It makes for good, informative reading on its own but also serves as a reference for various issues or situations that may arise in the workplace and how they would best be handled.

    A reviewer commented that the price of this book is rather steep, and felt that perhaps the CD contributed to that price. This is not a real thick book so on first glance I can see why one would feel that way. However, there are plenty of books out there with plenty of filler to make it seem like they are worth the price they charge. What you get with this guide is content that is straight to the point and is also easy to review for what you are looking for. Also, consider the price of the book versus the hourly rate of having to consult an attorney - the book costs about 1/3 to 1/4 of just one hour of time, so isn't it better to be proactive rather than reactive?

    A good insurance company will provide experts to come to your organization to give talks about dealing with harassment and discrimination since it costs them a lot less to try and prevent it in the first place rather than dealing with it after a claim or suit is filed. That's a good idea but once they finish their talk, they are gone. Having this book serves to reinforce the information obtained from an expert speaker and gives you the advantage of having an onhand reference. If you regularly manage people or are an integral part of a human resources department, the price of this book is minor compared to the value it provides.

    Solid information, But one-sided & Half the Picture.

    This book provided excellent information on the top-down and mid-level administrative level for those dealing with discrimination and harassment complaints brought forward by lower-level employees of an organization, but I think it is a glaring omission that book did not include information on initiating the process of filing one's own complaint. It seems to take the tone of someone from the inside of a risk management office who wants to help a company avoid being sued for mishandling a complaint or not having proper anti-harassment or anti-discrimination policies in place, when this is not the only type of scenario that managers will be confronted with. For one, when your boss is the government, it can work both ways. Sometimes mid-level members of the administration themselves will have to engage in the suing process to alleviate what are unjust acts. What if you are an affirmative action/equal opportunity officer, where your task is not just to protect the organization from frivolous suits but to serve as an advocate for employees with legitimate complaints? Wouldn't it make sense to include information not just on defusing issues of conflict but raising them as well? Half of this book is indeed missing.

    Every office should have this! Really. 40+? Get This!

    Another good book from NOLO.

    This time it covers a hot topic, and does so with ease. Real-life situations are outlined, as are possible and typical results.

    The book is written primarily from a management perspective, but is of great value to worker's as well. Just by reading the book, one becomes more sensitive - it tends to make you think about how you interact with people in the business world.

    Many topics are covered, all of which are vital. In our current economy, with high unemployment figures, people sometimes forget about law's, regulations or common courtesy in the workplace.

    I think every manager and HR pro should read this, and make it available to any staff member, with no questions asked.

    Of particular note, the chapters covering age discrimination were informative, and chilling.

    This is a book you will refer to over and over again. Well worth your time.
