About the Author
David Rosenwasser teaches at Muhlenberg College, a small liberal arts college in Pennsylvania, where he has been since the late 1980s. He and Jill Stephen created and implemented the Writing Across the Curriculum program there through a series of faculty seminars. During these seminars, Dr. Rosenwasser and Dr. Stephen discovered that while content faculty from across the disciplines maintained disciplinary-specific writing protocols, they essentially wanted the same thing from student writing: analysis. From this premise, WRITING ANALYTICALLY was born. Dr. Rosenwasser received his B.A. from Grinnell College and his Ph.D. from the University of Virginia in the theory and history of narrative. His current interests include contemporary Irish literature and comic theory. His most recent literary papers include a study of the contemporary Irish writer Edna O'Brien in relation to the work of Joyce and Yeats as well as an analysis of the politics of Bruce Springsteen's albums during the Bush presidency, written collaboratively with a political science professor.
Jill Stephen teaches at Muhlenberg College, a small liberal arts college in Pennsylvania, where she's been since the late 1980s. Along with David Rosenwasser, she created and implemented the Writing Across the Curriculum program there through a series of faculty seminars. In these seminars, they discovered that content faculty from across the disciplines, although they maintained disciplinary-specific writing protocols, essentially wanted the same thing from student writing: analysis. From this premise, their textbook, Writing Analytically, was born. Stephen worked in the expository writing program at New York University under Lil Brannon and Cy Knoblauch. She received her B.A. from the University of Illinois at Champaign-Urbana and received her Ph.D. from NYU on rhetorical theory as evidenced in Renaissance poetry and prose. Aside from her writing with Rosenwasser on composition and writing program administration, she writes on poetry, especially Renaissance lyrics. Her current interests include the poetry of Frank O'Hara, Emily Dickinson, and contemporary Irish women writers.

Informally informative

The book writes in the style that captures students' attention; not the usual style of textbooks, which is a huge plus! Only read the chapters that were assigned, but the book contains lots of god tips.

Writing Analytically was perfect this novice writer, but mature analyst

As a seasoned engineer who dreaded english classes in college, but now enjoys writing enough to take a course in the subject, this book presented a digestable approach for writing analytically and thoughtfully. Though some might criticize the authors for trying to package writing into simple steps and methods, I disagree that his approach talks down to the audience. As an engineer, I appreciate that most any formidable task, like writing a coherent paper, can be broken down into smaller tasks that are easier to accomplish and understand, if presented correctly. Writing doesn't come easy for me, and the methods presented here were not trivial, but thought provoking. I can't say if this book would help those writing fiction, I believe it would, but for the non-fiction I wrote, this book was very worthwhile.

Good Content but verbose

Good points: The focus is on teaching students an often neglected but important skill, developing a detailed and original understanding of subject material through writing. The authors provide a wide range of techniques and examples for achieving this objective. This comprehensive guide to writing also includes useful content regarding electronic research, syntax, diction, and grammar. Bad points: There are too many writing techniques, often redundant. Searching for the techniques was difficult, often preceded by a far too lengthy introduction and discussion. This approach might be well received by an English teacher, but for a time-pressed college student, time spent reading and searching this verbose book is time not spent writing an essay. A far better organization would be to condense the writing techniques to a smaller number, each labeled and placed in an appendix. Introducing each writing technique early in the chapter, in an easy to discern table, would also help the college student find and utilize these resources. The lengthy discussion could be placed in a later section of each chapter, content ignored by the time-pressed college student but available to the college English professor.
