“At last! The textbook I have been waiting for!

It's hard these days to write a counseling textbook that is fresh and doesn't read like a rehash of existing texts. David Paré has done it.

Many textbooks teach the practice of counseling to new learners by relying on basic ideas generated before the 1970s and grafting more recent developments onto this foundation as optional modalities. David Paré avoids this trap. He does not assume that the world has not changed or that innovative ideas that demand attention are not constantly being produced. Neither does he dismiss the foundations of counseling laid a generation or two ago as irrelevant. Instead he weaves into them new emphases drawn from the most creative practices of recent decades and makes them relevant to students learning the basics of practice. Specifically, ideas drawn from the turn to meaning are placed alongside well-established traditions of counseling.

Remarkably, David Paré both draws from sophisticated philosophical thought and yet avoids heady jargon. He speaks to the reader in a very direct, practical, and accessible way. This book guides students through the complex process of learning to be a counselor without hurrying understanding along or glossing over knotty issues. There is plenty of invitation to reflect, to loiter with a poignant metaphor, to discuss subtle nuances, and to incorporate both accumulated wisdom and vigorous new ideas into creative practice.

About the Author
David Paré, PhD is a psychologist and family therapist. He is also a full professor at the University of Ottawa, Faculty of Education, where he teaches counselling and psychotherapy. The director of the Glebe Institute, A Centre for Constructive and Collaborative Practice, Dr. Paré has a long-standing interest in collaborative approaches to counselling and supervision. He is co-editor of Collaborative Practice in Psychology and Therapy (with Glenn Larner) and Furthering Talk: Advances in the Discursive Therapies (with Tom Strong).

About the Author
Susan Weir, Ph.D. is the Assistant Vice Provost for Student Success Initiatives at the University of South Carolina. She has over 12 years academic advising and programming experience with a diverse range of students, including new students and students in transition. Susan developed a New Student Seminar, an orientation course for transfer students, and created a living and learning community exclusively for transfer students as well. She currently directs academic support services and retention initiatives at USC. Susan's educational background includes a doctoral degree in educational psychology, a master's degree in counseling psychology, and a bachelor's degree in journalism.

Not just for transfer students

If you want a portable but inclusive guide for your son or daughter, whether incoming freshman or transfer student, this book is a worthy choice.

Although it is marketed as a book for "transfer" students, most of the topics are applicable to all college students. And since many students will spend some time at more than one school, this is an excellent high school graduation gift for any college-bound senior.

Many of the topics are quite practical in nature. Students who are starry-eyed with the thought of college may forget about nutrition or other practical matters. Then, the "backside" of college is dealt with as well. Graduate school, resumes, the works.

My college-age son ranks this as the best of the several "college help" books he has seen.

About the Author
Thomas R. Arp received a B.A. in English from the University of Michigan (1954) and a Woodrow Wilson Fellowship to Stanford University. In 1955-1956, he produced educational television for the University of Michigan. He received an M.A. in 1960 and a Ph.D. in 1962 -- both from Stanford. He taught at Bowdoin College, Princeton University, University of California at Berkeley, Hull University (England), and Southern Methodist University. Macmillan published his volume THE FORM OF POETRY in 1966, and he received a Fulbright lectureship at University of Bucharest (Romania) in 1969-1970. Arp joined Laurence Perrine in preparing revised editions of SOUND AND SENSE, STORY AND STRUCTURE, and LITERATURE: STRUCTURE, SOUND, AND SENSE beginning in 1982. He became sole author of the books in 1997 and was joined by Greg Johnson in 2002. Dr. Arp passed away in 2015.

Greg Johnson received an M.A. in English from Southern Methodist University and a Ph.D. in English from Emory University. Dr. Johnson is the author of 12 books of fiction, poetry, criticism, and biography, including LAST ENCOUNTER WITH THE ENEMY (Johns Hopkins, 2004), WOMEN I'VE KNOWN: NEW AND SELECTED STORIES (Ontario Review, 2007), the novel STICKY KISSES (Alyson Books, 2001), and several books on Joyce Carol Oates, including INVISIBLE WRITER: A BIOGRAPHY OF JOYCE CAROL OATES (Dutton, 1998) and JOYCE CAROL OATES: CONVERSATIONS 1970-2006 (Ontario Review, 2006). He joined the author team of PERRINE'S LITERATURE in 2002 and has been the sole author since Thomas Arp's passing in 2015.

A Superb Introduction to Poetry and Poetic Form

I came across an early edition of Sound and Sense a few years ago. At first glance the slighty yellowed text appeared foreboding with chapters like denotation and connotation, imagery, figurative lanaguage, allusion, tone, rhythm and meter, sound and meaning, and so forth. I found it hard to imagine a less lifeless approach to poetry. However, the text did seem to contain a sizeable anthology as an appendix and poetry was abundant in every chapter. I reasoned that I could skip the poetic structure discussions and simply read the poetry.

But from the beginning I found Perrine's style and approach to be stimulating, rather than analytical. Throughout we are immersed in poetry, great poetry, familiar poetry, unfamiliar poetry. Perrine argues that poetry needs to be read and reread carefully for full understanding and appreciation. We need to learn to think about poetry with some seriousness, but not in a cold, calculating manner. We approach new poetry with our eyes and ears open, our senses alive.

Yes, as other reviewers point out, Sound and Sense is structured and does methodically explore poetic forms in some detail. But this is not a drawback. It is actually an aid to understanding. Perrine manages to achieve his instructional objective without diluting his central message: poetry is to be enjoyed. He never forgets that his subject is poetry, and not poetic form and structure.

I have since learned that Perrine's text is still in use today, nearly fifty years after publication of the first edition. (See recent 10th edition 0155073966, June 8, 2000.) How can that be? Few textbooks achieve ten printings, much less ten editions. Even the title change signifies respect; it is no longer simply Sound and Sense, it is "Perrine's Sound and Sense".

I highly recommend Perine's text to anyone willing to invest a little time and study to poetry. The return will be worthwhile. I give Sound and Sense five stars.

Excellent for use with students

I am currently using this book with 11th grade English students, and they have been truly caught up in it. We are actually having arguments in class over poetry!! I do find, however, that it is helpful to do the chapter on rhythm and meter much earlier than I would if I were following the chapters in order. My experience is that students have a difficult time hearing the rhythm of poetry and are generally unable to read aloud with any success. Jumping ahead early to the chapter on rhythm and meter and having the students tap out the meters and then mark the scansion produces a wonderful improvement in their ability to hear the poems and read them aloud. I would heartily recommend this book for use in grades 11 and 12, and for college freshman. It makes the study of poetry hugely enjoyable, as it should be but rarely is, for both student and teacher.

About the Author

Neil J. Salkind received his PhD from the University of Maryland in Human Development, and after teaching for 35 years at the University of Kansas, he remains as a Professor Emeritus in the Department of Psychology and Research in Education, where he continues to collaborate with colleagues and work with students. His early interests were in the area of children’s cognitive development, and after research in the areas of cognitive style and (what was then known as) hyperactivity, he was a postdoctoral fellow at the University of North Carolina’s Bush Center for Child and Family Policy. His work then changed direction and the focus was on child and family policy, specifically the impact of alternative forms of public support on various child and family outcomes. He has delivered more than 150 professional papers and presentations; written more than 100 trade and textbooks; and is the author of Statistics for People Who (Think They) Hate Statistics (Sage), Theories of Human Development (Sage), and Exploring Research (Prentice Hall). He has edited several encyclopedias, including the Encyclopedia of Human Development, the Encyclopedia of Measurement and Statistics, and the recently published Encyclopedia of Research Design. About the Author

An innovative thinker who is sought-after by institutions, publishers, and international think-tanks, Michael Fullan is special advisor on education to Dalton McGuinty, the premier of Ontario. He formerly served as dean and professor emeritus at the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education at the University of Toronto. He holds honorary doctorates from the University of Edinburgh, Scotland and from Nipissing University in Canada.

Fullan served as dean of the faculty of education at the University of Toronto from 1988 to 2003, leading two major organizational transformations, including a merger of two large schools of education. He is currently working as adviser and consultant on several major education reform initiatives around the world.

He bases his work on research and practice on both the public and private sectors, finding an increasing convergence in this literature. He has written several bestsellers on leadership and change that have been translated into several languages. If a spouse is more generous than in their prenuptial agreement, that spouse's children may seek to challenge the estate plan, which pits those children squarely against the surviving spouse, who is forced to defend the plan.

    Choosing an unqualified or biased executor or trustee or choosing co-trustees or co executors who cannot agree, leading to deadlock.

    Leaving significant property outright to minor children. If the ex-spouse is the guardian of the children, the ex-spouse may get significant control over the assets.

    Leaving everything outright to one child with the expectation that the child will distribute it wisely among the surviving spouse and other children. That child is then hounded by siblings and the surviving spouse and subject to challenge in the way the child divides the property.

    Failing to update beneficiary designations on nonprobate assets (life insurance, retirement plans and payable on death accounts). I have seen situations where years after the divorce the ex-spouse was still listed as the beneficiary -- clearly not the intended result!

    Leaving everything outright to the surviving spouse, expecting the surviving spouse to take care of, and ultimately leave everything to, your children. The funds that you thought were ultimately going to your children may be consumed by the surviving spouse's lifestyle or creditors, or left to a new spouse or to the spouse's children.

    Failing to have an up-to-date plan reflecting current goals and concerns.

    A great start for thinking through some tough questions

    If this book were simply about the various estate planning options available, it would be undistinguishable from any of several other well-written books on the subject. The true strength of the book for me was the moral compass and genuine kindness that the authors encourage as they explain the various factors to consider in developing a plan. If you're looking for "10 ways to screw the ex-wife" or "How to leave your step-father homeless after mom dies," then this book is not for you. This book advocates for doing the right thing by all family members, which does not always mean even-stevens. With this purpose in mind, various scenarios and alternatives are examined. By the end of the book, I had a much better idea of how to approach our own estate planning and feel much more confident about how to direct our attorney in drawing up the papers.

    Highly recommended

    I am a professional financial planner with over two decades of experience. It is with this background that I tell you that I love, love, love this book! It should be on the bookshelf of every financial planner, and read by anyone entering a second marriage where there are children from prior marriages.

    How could one book be appropriate for both the novice and the professional?
    * For the Novice: The books concepts are presented in English, not "legaleeze"; that will let the you develop some understanding of the blended family estate planning issues; let you think things through and talk things over before contacting a lawyer.
    * For the Professional: This book is really well done. If you haven't studied estate planning issues in a professional program such as the CFP® (Certified Financial Planner), then this will be a great help to you. If you are already a CFP® ,(or other qualified professional) then this will be a quick up-to-date reference for you. Nola indicates that there are "Free legal updates at Nolo.com"

    To give you an idea why I am so positive on this book... page 212 has the simplest tip that will save your heirs the frustration and agony of dealing with indifferent professional trustees and could save them thousands or tens of thousands of dollars in fee. It tells you that your trust documents should have a way to replace the trustee. It has been my professional experience that trustees work harder if they can be replaced. Additionally it is possible to negotiate fees if the banks/trust company needs to compete for your business. In all the years that I have been working as a planner, I have only seen 1 law firm produce such documents without a specific request of the client. Why is that? I can only speculate. But, law firms and banks/trust companies often refer clients back and forth. No money changes hands directly, but the fees earned indirectly can be staggering.

    Don't expect that a single book is a substitute for a qualified estate lawyer. Wills, trusts and other estate planning tools in the opinion of this writer need to executed by qualified attorney licensed as such in the state in which you are domiciled. While almost any licensed attorney can do a will, whether or not that attorney is "qualified" to handle the sophisticated level of estate planning required by many blended families is another matter. This book should help you discern whether or not you have found the right professional for you.

    Also, each state has its own peculiarities when it comes to estate planning. Some are community property states; some not. Some states are incredibly expensive when it comes to probate; in others probate is so easy and inexpensive to go through probate that probate avoidance can easily cost you more than the probate process. No single book can address all the state specific issues.

    Estate Planning for Blended Families is not a substitute for highly trained qualified professionals. But it will allow the client to be much more engaged in the process, increasing the odds of a successful outcome. I highly recommend this book.

    Needs same features as paper book! Beware!

    Here's an example of why ebooks get criticized: Unlike the paper book, this version contains helpful forms in the appendix that AREN'T available in a pdf format. This would be a simple fix, but apparently the editor/publisher wants you to buy both. Other ebooks I've bought have provided pdfs of forms at the end. C'mon, NOLO!

    Susan McLeod is Professor of Writing and Director of the Writing Program at full professor at UC Santa Barbara, and the author of the several books. Additionally, she has published extensively in the professional journals, having authored over 50 articles for such publications as 3 C's and College English. She is a member of the Board of Consultants of the National Network of Writing Across the Curriculum Programs and has facilitated WAC workshops at over 100 different colleges and universities.

    John Jarvis is a full professor of English and Communications and the chair of the Liberal Studies Department at Bay Path College in Longmeadow, Massachusetts.

    Shelley Spear is the author of Writing Off Center: An American Issues Reader for Composition, an ITP book.

    About the Author

    Meda Chesney-Lind is Professor of Women’s Studies at the University of Hawaii at Manoa. She holds a Ph.D. in Sociology from the University of Hawaii, and a B.A. Summa Cum Laude from Whitman College. She has served as Vice President of the American Society of Criminology and president of the Western Society of Criminology. Nationally recognized for her work on women and crime, her books include Girls, Delinquency and Juvenile Justice, The Female Offender: Girls, Women and Crime, Female Gangs in America, Invisible Punishment, Girls, Women and Crime, and Beyond Bad Girls: Gender Violence and Hype. She has just finished an edited collection on trends in girls’ violence, entitled Fighting for Girls: Critical Perspectives on Gender and Violence, published by SUNY Press. Dr. Chesney-Lind is a Fellow of the American Society of Criminology and the Western Society of Criminology. She has been on the Women’s Studies faculty at the University of Hawaii since 1986, and also serves on the graduate faculty in the Department of Sociology.

    She received the Bruce Smith, Sr. Award "for outstanding contributions to Criminal Justice" from the Academy of Criminal Justice Sciences in April, 2001. She was named a fellow of the American Society of Criminology in 1996 and has also received the Herbert Block Award for service to the society and the profession from the American Society of Criminology. She has also received the Donald Cressey Award from the National Council on Crime and Delinquency for "outstanding contributions to the field of criminology," the Founders award of the Western Society of Criminology for "significant improvement of the quality of justice," and the University of Hawaii Board of Regent's Medal for "Excellence in Research."

    Chesney-Lind is an outspoken advocate for girls and women, particularly those who find their way into the criminal justice system. Her work on the problem of sexism in the treatment of girls in the juvenile justice system was partially responsible for the recent national attention devoted to services to girls in that system. More recently, she has worked hard to call attention to the soaring rate of women's imprisonment and the need to vigorously seek alternatives to women's incarceration.

    In Hawaii, Chesney-Lind has served as Principal Investigator of a long standing project on Hawaii's youth gang problem funded by the State of Hawaii Office of Youth Services. She has more recently also received funding to conduct research on the unique problems of girl's at risk of becoming delinquent from the Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention. Finally, she has also recently been tapped by the Hawaii Department of Public Safety to serve on an advisory panel on the problems of women in prison in Hawaii.



    Lisa Pasko, Assistant Professor, received her PhD from the University of Hawaii at Manoa. Lisa's primary research and teaching interests include criminology, punishment, sexualities/gender studies, as well as methodological issues in conducting studies of crime and deviance. Her dissertation examined juvenile delinquency and justice in Hawaii, with particular attention on the differential effects institutional policies and behaviors have on boys and girls. She is co-author of "The Female Offender" and other articles that explore issues of gender and delinquency. Dr. Pasko teaches courses on criminology, the female offender, men and masculinities, and crime and punishment. For the past ten years, she has been involved in criminal justice research. As project coordinator for the University of Hawaii Youth Gang Project, she evaluated numerous prevention and intervention programs for at-risk youth. Dr. Pasko has published in a variety of areas, including an ethnography of stripping, pathways predictors of juvenile justice involvement, a feminist analysis of restorative justice initiatives, and evaluations of two girl offender programs. Her current research is funded by the Colorado Division of Criminal Justice and examines the treatment of sexual minority girls in youth corrections.

    About the Author
    Paul R. Frommer (BA, mathematics, University of Rochester; MA and PhD, linguistics, USC) lived and taught in Malaysia and Iran. The former director of USC's Center for Management Communication, where he taught Advanced Writing for Business and Cross-cultural Business Communication for Non-native Speakers, he created the Na'vi language for James Cameron's film "Avatar" and is currently working with a worldwide community of enthusiasts to expand the language. He also developed Barsoomian, the Martian language for the Disney film "John Carter."

    Edward Finegan (MA and PhD, Ohio University) specializes in sociolinguistics, discourse analysis, forensic linguistics, and the history and structure of the English language. He served as chair of the Department of Linguistics at USC and currently serves as director of USC's Center for Excellence in Teaching. President of the International Association of Forensic Linguists, Finegan is editor of DICTIONARIES: THE JOURNAL OF THE DICTIONARY SOCIETY OF NORTH AMERICA and has been Liberal Arts Fellow in Law and Linguistics, Harvard University; Visiting Professor at University of Zurich; and Visiting Scholar at University of Helsinki. He also served as Director of American Language Institute/National Iranian Radio and Television [1975-1976 in peaceful times]. He is the recipient of many teaching awards and honors.

    Languages workbook

    Looking at Languages Workbook was quite good and organized. Really benefited my son who is currently taking a linguistics course in college. The dealer we bought from shipped via postal mail so it was a bit slow using Media Mail to Hawaii but I did not choose a faster way so I guess this was my fault. Dealer advertised workbook as new. It was relatively new, no marks or mark-ups inside but the outside was a tad beat up like it had been on the shelf for a while. Overall a good deal and good price.
