An easy to read book that every Non-profit executive or Board Member should read.

While I usually review CDs and DVDs as well as entertainment related books here on Amazon, in my major occupation, I am a CPA with over 40 years of work in the Nonprofit field. I am also a Board Member and Treasurer of a Nonprofit so I feel qualified to provide an accurate review of this book.
It is another in the fine line of legal books - written in plain English - by Nolo Press. I've been reading their books for more than 30 years.
This particular volume is the 4th Edition. The original was published in 2005 and this is the 2013 version. It's not clear what parts have been updated or revised. But note the date on previous reviews because the review might be of an earlier edition. Amazon does not tie reviews to the actual edition of the book. Just be aware of that.
The author, who acted as both a volunteer and as a paid funds development director for a number of nonprofits (per her bio) , makes you feel at ease as a reader, right from the start. Nonprofits tend to rush out and hire professional fund raisers and then expect the money to roll in. I've seen way too many cases where the organization did not follow the consultant's (who, trust me, do not work cheap!) recommendations and ended up paying the consultant their fee while not increasing contributions and gift. It's well worth buying this book and reading it (it's 433 pages of text but with LOTS of white space so it goes real quick) before hiring someone to guide you.
Even if you aren't planning a large fund raising event, there are suggestions here which will guide you in collecting unpaid dues, getting people to add you to their will and other ways to generate the income that non-profits surely need. In fact, I would easily recommend that all the Board Members of a non-profit consider this required reading and possibly setting aside a part of their board meeting - or a retreat - to discuss the ideas included.
The author does include some "forms" in the back for calculating the cost of a fund raising event or even the cost of a mailing requesting donations, but I found them a bit too focused. She does provide section on NOLO's website where you can read updates to the book.
So, if you are involved with a non-profit as either management or as a Board Member, I can certainly recommend this book.

A Wealth of Information with One Thing Missing

I am involved in helping a non-profit child care organization that works with underprivileged and special needs kids. The recessionary period had really been hard on them financially and I needed more information on helping them raise money. I really found a wealth of information here.
I have read other NOLO books and found them to be very good. This one is no exception. First, it is a big book - 490 pages, so I felt a bit overwhelmed at first. Being new to this, I thought I might be over my head. It actually starts with the basics of developing a plan and identifying potential donors and progresses to how to organize fundraising events and work with your board of directors.
This book is full of great ideas that I had never considered. It is well written and takes you at a nice pace that even a novice like me can digest. Every chapter has proven methods, and suggestions on how to use the information effectively. The forms in the back are very helpful for implementing the ideas presented.
I would certainly recommend this book to anyone who is involved in fundraising. The one thing that is missing for me is more detailed information on Crowdfunding and using social media. There is a 2-page mention of Crowdfunding, and brief mention of Facebook and social media. I realize this is a relatively new concept, but it is really what I was most interested in. It is important to connect with your audience where they are. That is why I gave it 4 Stars.
