WONDERFUL BOOK!

I have taught with this book many times. It has clear explanations of grammar basics, lots of exercises all through, and ALL the answers in the back, so students can self-educate to a certain extent. One of the finest books for college developmental English courses. It also has a superb bank of exercise and progress tests - available for instructors.

The Least You Should Know about English

What good are those proofreading marks on your paper if you have no idea how to fix the problem? Most English grammar books use so much technical jargon that the writer just gives up. This book lays out the problem using a minimum of grammatical terms and then clearly shows how to write the word or passage correctly. Use it as a reference book or go through it chapter by chapter; grammar will finally make sense.

Great book that will save you more than it cost you

As much as I like this book it is not exactly "everything you need to start a small business." On the other hand it is a well written and comprehensive guide that really does use plain English to explain a lot of obtuse steps and pitfalls. You will almost certainly need more professional help than you can get from this book, but this book does a pretty good job of guiding you to the help you need and avoiding the help you don't. That can translate into a lot of saved attorney's fees right off the bat. One less billed hour from your attorney will pay for this book. In that sense if you are starting a new business this book is pretty much free.

The author is a law-school grad and business consultant who specializes in working with startups. She has written and edited other books for Nolo. All this comes out both the clarity of the writing and the command of the subject matter she clearly has. The book does a good job of covering all of the basics, and starts wisely with the most important topic: picking the right legal structure (which can save you a lot of pain later in the process). She moves on from there and touches on everything from taxes to marketing. Along the way you will find areas where you need to dig deeper, either with professional help or by getting additional guides (which Nolo of course, is happy to sell you). Nolo has been in this business for 40 odd years and stands out as one of the best in these business of "business self-help" books. One I would suggest as a companion to this is their excellent "How to Write a Business Plan" guide. This book has a section on business plans, but if you are going to be pitching your business to potential investors you're going to need more. If you are just writing a plan to clarify your business model to yourself (a good idea) this book alone is enough.

The included software, while handy for things like some basic legal forms, is no replacement for professional software or legal help. It is nice to see what kinds of forms you are going to need and that can focus you on exactly what you need to get out of an attorney. It's amazing how much money you can save when you already know exactly what you want.

All in all a priceless aid to starting up a new business.

A complete resource for small business owners or those who are planning to open a small business

Nolo's The Small Business Start-Up Kit - A Step-by Step Legal Guide is a complete guide for Small Business (and Business in general). This book is filled with useful "tips", "cautions" and "examples" that makes it fun to read and easy to understand. This book doesn't tell you what business to open, or what product and services to offer, but it pretty much cover everything else that you need to know about operating a small business. It also covers all the important forms and documents (tax forms, contract templates, EIN application, partnership agreement, buy-sell agreement entity classification etc). Many more relevant forms and document templates are in the CD-ROM (CD-ROM included). Some basic business financial planning are also covered such as cash flow projection, profit/loss forecast, break-even analysis, etc. I would recommend this book for current small business owners (who want to manage their business better) and for people who are thinking to open a small business.

Another Well-Organized and Informative NOLO Book

Some people may be wondering, "Why 'Women'?" After all, it's about starting a small business. Are the differences for women really enough to justify a separate book?

After reading through Pakroo's book, I think the answer to this is, "Yes." As she explains in the introduction (paraphrased): "There are business basics that apply to men and women alike: writing a business plan, handling finances, getting a website, etc.. But there are also women-specific topics: government contracts for women, identifying yourself as a woman-owned business and using it to financial advantage, plus interviews (on the CD) with women who've succeeded as entrepreneurs."

She points out that this is not really a book of "inspiration" (although her enthusiasm for women-as-entrepreneurs" is a bit inspiring in itself. She wants readers to know her emphasis is really on successfully starting and running a business--in other words, realistic, factual, practical help, including pros and cons (like health insurance coverage). The discussion of the pros and cons of running a business from home was useful--particularly the reminder of how many things are deductible even if your home office doesn't qualify for federal deduction.

And then there is marketing. Lots of good ideas here, both in the "real" world and using various opportunities online. (The website information, in my opinion, needs work. The nuts and bolts of web authoring are missed--why no mention of Dreamweaver?--and there's a lack of clarity in who would be able to create the website, update it, and maintain it. I really thought this section was a good idea, but poorly executed. The section on financial accountability was better.

There is tax advice at the end, and a CD with some forms that could help new businesses set up a partnership and maintain their books and stay organized. All-in-all, I wouldn't call it a "Step by step legal guide", but there's a lot of good information and it's a very solid overview that would help a new businesswoman know what to prepare for and to troubleshoot some of the problems enough to avoid them--always a good thing.

About the Author
Jeanne H. Ballantine is professor of sociology at Wright State University in Dayton, Ohio. She received an MA from Columbia University and a PhD from Indiana University, with a specialty in sociology of education. She has been teaching and writing for more than 30 years and has written or coauthored several texts, including Sociology of Education: A Systematic Analysis, Teaching Sociology of EducationSociological Footprints and Our Social World: Introduction to Sociology.She has also published in other areas, including gender and teaching of sociology, and has been an active member of sociology of education organizations, including the ASA Section on Sociology of Education, the American Educational Research Association (AERA), and the International Sociological Association (ISA) Research Committee on Sociology of Education. She has won numerous awards, including the ASA Distinguished Contributions to Teaching Award. Keith Roberts, Professor of Sociology at Hanover College, has not only won teaching awards, but has been honored by several sociological associations for Distinguished Contributions to Teaching including the ASAs 2010 Award He has published on teaching and conducted workshops around the country. He is a member of the Departmental Resources Group of the ASA, which among other activities involves consulting work with departments of sociology on curriculum and on teaching issues. He is the co-author of Religion in Sociological Perspective, Fifth Edition SAGE, ©2012), Our Social World(SAGE, ©2011) and Our Social World Condensed SAGE, ©2010), and a monograph on Writing in the Undergraduate Sociology Curriculum. About the Author
Roderic Duncan was appointed to the California Municipal Court in 1975, and he was elected to the California Superior Court bench in 1987. Over the years, he has been a lecturer and faculty member at two dozen educational programs for judges. In 1990, he was chosen the Judicial Officer of the Year by the California State Bar, Family Law Section. Since retiring from the bench in 1995, he has been doing private judging and mediation.

Great resource yes, but be ready to put in serious effort.

In the right hands, this book can be a valuable, even powerful tool ... but don't let it's "Do-it-Yourself" tone give you anything resembling confidence when filing a lawsuit in Superior Court. I practiced law in Los Angeles County for eleven years. Trust me when I tell you that filing and maintaining a civil suit in Superior Court is a complex and detailed undertaking. Your paperwork, in both form and content, must be neat and precise if you want the court (and your adversary's attorney) to take you seriously.

Indeed, Win Your Lawsuit: Sue in California Superior Court Without a Lawyer offers an impressive - even comprehensive array of resources to guide you through the process. Its author Judge Roderick Duncan has earned a reputation for producing well organized, common-sense books to guide non-attorneys through several areas of law. The book includes most all Superior Court forms, the rest are available on their website. It can be done. You can sue by yourself, and you can win. But be prepared to supplement this workbook with a pretty substantial dedication of your time if you're serious about winning.

And don't be surprised if you meet some daunting resistance in the courtroom ... some judges DO NOT LIKE parties representing themselves in their courtrooms. I've seen a few who actually take offense at the idea. So be prepared to win the judge over with your preparation and attention to detail.

Couple more tips: 1)Keep a dedicated calendar exclusively for the lawsuit and nothing else, missed deadlines can kill you, 2) Enlist a family member or friend to get involved on a regular basis, someone to take a second look at everything you do, and 3) avoid anger and emotion like the plague

Four stars for this book, deduct one for its marketing-driven, misleading "do-it-yourself" tone.

OK as a second resource; not as good as the court websites

MOST OF THIS INFORMATION IS AVAILABLE ON THE COUNTY COURT WEBSITES.

The California court system has excellent websites explaining how to do anything in court. Each county has a different website for civil lawsuits, although some counties have combined resources with other counties. I found the Santa Clara websites to be better than Alameda County.

The Santa Clara superior court website is much better than this book and is easier to read. The main text of this book is 283 pages, hard to navigate and takes days to get through. I got all the information I needed from the Santa Clara County website within a few hours. (search for Santa Clara Court Self Help).

The Santa Clara website also has better information, such as deciding whether to sue in small claims court or to file in Superior Court. Small claims court does not allow discovery (you cannot request information from the party you are suing). So, if the opposing party has an important document or video surveillance that would help your case, you cannot get that in small claims court and must sue in Superior Court if you really need it. The website covers this, while the book does not.

So, if you are trying to decide if you want to sue someone, go to the county court websites first. If you decide you want to sue someone, then you probably should buy this book. If you are going through the expense of suing someone, you will want all the help you can get. This book does have some rudimentary tips on how to handle yourself during a lawsuit.

This is a thorough manual that leads you from the very first point of "Representing Yourself" and "Limited Jurisdiction Case" to the preparation parts of "Selecting the Right Court" and "Beginning Your Tort or Contract Complaint" then to the actual trial phase including "Discovery Rules and Limits" and "Sizing Up the Judge" to the end with "Closing Arguments" and "Requesting a New Trial".

Sample forms filled out with information is supplied in many sections to serve as examples. There are little boxes throughout each section including "Tip", "Resource", and "Caution" that give you additional helpful advice. In the last section of the book(Appendix A), you get a large selection of tear-out forms.

Including a CD with this book would have been better(for some reason certain Nolo books contain a CD while others don't). Overall I would say this book would be more useful for beginners or people who have never gone through the process of suing in California. If you are a small business owner it might be a good idea to have this book handy just in case.

There is nothing in this book that is not in any other literary terms book. However, it's the quality, not quantity (isn't that what they always say? Well, it's true this time). The way that terms are defined makes sense to everyone, not just the avid writer or reader of literature.
For example, look up 'Heroic Couplets' elsewhere and you'll find broad, vague definitions with little or no description. Well, think again when it comes to Mr. Abrams version of interpretation. Also, the way the book is structured is clever in itself. When looking up one definition, it leads to other words that are unknown, thus making full use of the book.
If you have any desire to write or just want a better understanding of what terms are being thrown at you in text, consult this gem. If you don't agree, contact me and I'll refund your money (okay, that was a joke). Wise investment.

nice explanations

Abrams supplies very nicely written explanations of many terms you are likely to come across in literature, or more specifically, in literary studies. If you have puzzled over an "objective correlative", then he explains that it wasn't due to TS Eliot, as many believe, but to Allston. Though Eliot was the one responsible for popularising the term. Or, if you want to use "doggerel" properly when deconstructing some Bukowski poem, perhaps check Abrams first.

Essential for Lovers of Literature

Every student of literature should have their own copy of this book. Non-students would get a lot out of this too. And while the price might appear excessive, I think in the long-term this book is a worthwhile investment. What makes this guide of literary terms different from others, is its comprehensiveness. Abrams goes into great detail on the important terms that one comes across most often in literature. There is information on theories and movements in criticism and terms such as modernism and post modernism, are clearly defined. there is also material on symbolism, metaphor and other figures of speech and so on. A Glossary of Literary Terms, now in its 8th edition, is written in a lucid style, and is a must buy for anyone who wants to expand their literary horizons. Recommended. 5 stars.

Her research interests include second language acquisition and the application of theoretical constructs to the field of pedagogy and language teaching. Professor Bragger is the co-author of ALLONS-Y!; JE VEUX BIEN!; and QUANT A MOI. She received her Ph.D. from the University of California at Santa Barbara.

Donald B. Rice was Professor Emeritus of French, Hamline University. His research interests included literary theory and twentieth-century French novels. He is co-author of ALLONS-Y!; JE VEUX BIEN!; and AUTOUR DE LA LITTÉRATURE. Professor Rice received his Ph.D. from the University of Wisconsin.

Not bad, not excellent

I purchased this book as a refresher for French and, while it's not an awful book, it's definitely missing some key language basics as well as French cultural cues. Still, there's a lot of good info in the book and study guide.

Tremendous method for language self education

I've studied Latin, German, Japanese, and French using various popular methods. This course with its accompanying audio and workbook materials is the best language course that I have ever attempted on my own. Most self-study language courses are either too simple to be of practical use or focus so much on grammar and sentence construction that they turn into drudgery after a few lessons. Unless the course material is engaging, it's very hard to continue the course with no mid-term or final exams as motivation. Simply put, I enjoyed this course so much that I looked forward to each of my weekly self-study sessions.

Confusing, Hard To Understand

I purchased this book as it was a requirement for LA 260 Beginning French. I am really displeased with the book, when you first open it up it immediate starts off in French with little to no translations of the words or phrases used. The pages are extremely disorganized as well with blocks of text everywhere and not cleanly organized for ease of reading. The other thing that bothers me is that in some of the exercise examples, they don't explain the "model" and how they came to that structure of the sentence so you have no idea why you are phrasing the words in that way.

Over all, this is a poor book that is also pretty outdated (I mean, they show pictures of Walkmans, Discmans, and old Desktop computers!). I'm going to France this summer and I'm afraid I'll be laughed at for being out of date in my communication.

Also the seller I got this from was late with the shipment and I had missed the first 3 weeks of my class thanks to them.

About the Author

Meda Chesney-Lind is Professor of Women’s Studies at the University of Hawaii at Manoa. She holds a Ph.D. in Sociology from the University of Hawaii, and a B.A. Summa Cum Laude from Whitman College. She has served as Vice President of the American Society of Criminology and president of the Western Society of Criminology. Nationally recognized for her work on women and crime, her books include Girls, Delinquency and Juvenile Justice, The Female Offender: Girls, Women and Crime, Female Gangs in America, Invisible Punishment, Girls, Women and Crime, and Beyond Bad Girls: Gender Violence and Hype. She has just finished an edited collection on trends in girls’ violence, entitled Fighting for Girls: Critical Perspectives on Gender and Violence, published by SUNY Press. Dr. Chesney-Lind is a Fellow of the American Society of Criminology and the Western Society of Criminology. She has been on the Women’s Studies faculty at the University of Hawaii since 1986, and also serves on the graduate faculty in the Department of Sociology.

She received the Bruce Smith, Sr. Award "for outstanding contributions to Criminal Justice" from the Academy of Criminal Justice Sciences in April, 2001. She was named a fellow of the American Society of Criminology in 1996 and has also received the Herbert Block Award for service to the society and the profession from the American Society of Criminology. She has also received the Donald Cressey Award from the National Council on Crime and Delinquency for "outstanding contributions to the field of criminology," the Founders award of the Western Society of Criminology for "significant improvement of the quality of justice," and the University of Hawaii Board of Regent's Medal for "Excellence in Research."

Chesney-Lind is an outspoken advocate for girls and women, particularly those who find their way into the criminal justice system. Her work on the problem of sexism in the treatment of girls in the juvenile justice system was partially responsible for the recent national attention devoted to services to girls in that system. More recently, she has worked hard to call attention to the soaring rate of women's imprisonment and the need to vigorously seek alternatives to women's incarceration.

In Hawaii, Chesney-Lind has served as Principal Investigator of a long standing project on Hawaii's youth gang problem funded by the State of Hawaii Office of Youth Services. She has more recently also received funding to conduct research on the unique problems of girl's at risk of becoming delinquent from the Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention. Finally, she has also recently been tapped by the Hawaii Department of Public Safety to serve on an advisory panel on the problems of women in prison in Hawaii.

Lisa Pasko, Assistant Professor, received her PhD from the University of Hawaii at Manoa. Lisa's primary research and teaching interests include criminology, punishment, sexualities/gender studies, as well as methodological issues in conducting studies of crime and deviance. Her dissertation examined juvenile delinquency and justice in Hawaii, with particular attention on the differential effects institutional policies and behaviors have on boys and girls. She is co-author of "The Female Offender" and other articles that explore issues of gender and delinquency. Dr. Pasko teaches courses on criminology, the female offender, men and masculinities, and crime and punishment. For the past ten years, she has been involved in criminal justice research. As project coordinator for the University of Hawaii Youth Gang Project, she evaluated numerous prevention and intervention programs for at-risk youth. Dr. Pasko has published in a variety of areas, including an ethnography of stripping, pathways predictors of juvenile justice involvement, a feminist analysis of restorative justice initiatives, and evaluations of two girl offender programs. Her current research is funded by the Colorado Division of Criminal Justice and examines the treatment of sexual minority girls in youth corrections.

Excellent new edition!

This ground breaking book now in its third edition does much to dispel the myths about girls and women and violence, gang delinquency, etc. Arguments are backed up with dynamic examples and recent evidence-based material. The Female Offender is must reading for students and professors of criminology, researchers on criminal justice and women studies, and correctional counselors.
