About the Author
Dr. Michael Scott Doyle (PhD, University of Virginia) is a Professor of Spanish, Translation Studies, and Business Spanish at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. Dr. Doyle served as a Distinguished Visiting Professor of Spanish at the United States Air Force Academy (USAFA) during the 2013-2014 academic year. At UNC Charlotte he chaired the Department of Foreign Languages (1993-99) and served as Graduate Coordinator (1999-2003 and 2005-2009), Director of the Certificate in Business Spanish (1998-), and Director of the undergraduate and graduate Certificates in Translating and Translation Studies (2000-2012). He also chaired the Department of Spanish and Portuguese at San Diego State University (1991-93). To date, Dr. Doyle has 76 publications (64 single-authored), among them 13 books as well as book chapters, articles, essays, translations, interviews, and other contributions. Most recently, he is the author of a trilogy of articles on Business Language Studies, Business Spanish, and Language and Spanish for Specific Purposes: "Business Language Studies in the United States: On Nomenclature, Context, Theory, and Method" (focus issue of The Modern Language Journal); "Business Spanish in the United States: Evolution, Method and Markets" (Cuadernos de ALDEEU [Asociacion de Licenciados y Doctores Espanoles en los Estados Unidos; Spanish Professionals in America, Inc.]); and "Continuing Provisional Theoretical Cartography in the LSP Era" (Scholarship and Teaching on Languages for Specific Purposes [LSP]). He is certified by the American Translators Association (ATA) in both Spanish to English and English to Spanish translation.

T. Bruce Fryer (PhD, University of Texas-Austin) is Distinguished Professor Emeritus of Spanish at the University of South Carolina-Columbia where he taught from 1970-2005. He worked with the Master's of International Business Program for 28 years, and for sixteen years he directed Faculty Development in International Business workshops for Spanish professors through the Center for International Business (CIBER) at USC. He has worked in the area of language for business and the professions in Colombia, Costa Rica, Mexico, Venezuela, Costa Rica, Spain, Puerto Rico, and Trinidad and Tobago and he continues to serve on numerous editorial boards for business language instruction. He is co-author or editor of twenty articles or chapters dealing with the preparation of teachers for the professions, appearing in the Modern Language Journal, Hispania, and Foreign Language Annals, and 15 books including Spanish for the Business Traveler, and Spanish and Portuguese for Business and the Professions (AATSP), along with this text. Results of his Fulbright study in Equatorial Guinea were published in the Afro-Hispanic Review. In a career spanning 50 years, he has taught Spanish language, linguistics, and culture at all levels of instruction. He currently teaches at the University of South Carolina-Beaufort.

Ronald C. Cere (Ph.D., New York University) is a Professor of Spanish in Eastern Michigan University's (EMU) Language and International Trade Program and has taught Business Spanish since 1975 at various U.S. universities and for Fortune 500 companies, notably MASCO Corp. He has published numerous books, manuals, and articles for Coleccion Iberia, McGraw-Hill, Hispania, Canadian Modern Language Journal, The American Association of Teachers of Spanish and Portuguese (AATSP), and Dimensions, and has delivered over 150 presentations, seminars, and workshops nationally and internationally on commercial Spanish and other foreign language subjects, especially cross-cultural communication. Professor Cere co-chaired EMU's annual conference on Language and Communication for World Business and the Profession, was Director of the Career Division of the AATSP, organizations, such as the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages, the Modern Language Association, the Southern Conference on Language Teaching, the American Association of Teachers of Spanish and Portuguese, and the Society of Training and Development.

About the Author
David Derezotes, LCSW, PhD,  is Professor at the College of Social Work, University of Utah, where he is Director of the Bridge Training Clinic and Chair of Practice and Mental Health. He also serves on faculty in the Peace and Conflict Studies, Religious Studies, and URLEND  programs. He has a PhD in Social Welfare from UC Berkeley and a MSW from San Diego State University. He is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker in Utah, where he has worked with the Indian Walk In Center and the Family Counseling Center. He currently is involved in many dialogue projects, including Bridging the Religious Divide, the Dialogue Training Group, and the White Male Privilege Group. He has published numerous textbooks and articles, including texts on Advanced Generalist Social Work Practice (2000), Revaluing Social Work: Implications of Emerging Science and Technology (2005), and Spiritually Oriented Social Work Practice (2006).

JOHN W. SANTROCK, Ph.D., is a leading author of college success and psychology textbooks. He is a professor of psychology and human development at the University of Texas at Dallas (UTD), where he helped to establish the college success program. More than two million students have used his top-selling texts, which include PSYCHOLOGY: CONTEXTS, SCIENCE, AND APPLICATIONS. In addition to college success strategies, his research interests focus on the nature of family processes and the social development of children and adolescents.

JANE S. HALONEN, psychology professor, author, and critical thinking expert, is dean of the College of Arts and Sciences at the University of West Florida. Good...but

The book I ordered stated in good condition - no writing in it.
It was in good condition (no tears) but there WAS writing in it. Fortunately the writing was in pencil, and we able to erase it all.
It is a book required for a college course and I didn't want my daughter to read someone elses answers to the questions or notations. The price was fabulous.

Myron Moskovitz is a native San Franciscan who received his law degree (with honors) from the University of California in Berkeley in 1964. Since then, he has served as the Chief Attorney of the National Housing Law Project in Berkeley and Chairman of the States Commission on Housing and Community Development. Co-author of California Tenants' Rights, he has written many articles on tenants rights, and won several important cases establishing new rights for tenants. Ralph Warner is a co-founder of Nolo Press and one of the pioneers of the self-help law movement. A graduate of Princeton University and the Boalt School of Law (U.C. Berkeley), he is the author of many books and articles aimed at making our legal system more accessible and democratic.

About the Author
As Nolo's managing editor, Portman oversees editorial work on all Nolo books. She specializes in residential and commercial landlord/tenant law, legal issues related to courts, landlords and tenants, and neighbor disputes. She is the author or co-author of Every Landlord's Legal Guide, Every Landlord's Guide to Finding Great Tenants, Every Tenant's Legal Guide, Renters' Rights, Negotiate the Best Lease for Your Business, Leases & Rental Agreements, The California Landlord's Law Book and California Tenants' Rights. Portman received undergraduate and graduate degrees from Stanford University and a law degree from Santa Clara University. Before joining Nolo in 1994, she practiced law as a public defender.

David Brown practices law in the Monterey, California area, where he has represented both landlords and tenants in hundreds of court cases -- most of which he felt could have been avoided if both sides were more fully informed about landlord/tenant law. The book to have if your landlord is a jerk.

If your landlord is a jerk and you want to know what he (or she) can legally do or not do, this book will help. It will also give you some idea of when to go for professional help. It is of less help in figuring out what to do before you have to bring in the lawyers. I found it very helpfull to leave this book on the coffee table when my nosy landlord was snooping around my apartment. Apparently bad landlords don't like it when tenants know their rights.

Sandra N. Elbaum was an ESL Instructor at Truman College, one of the City Colleges of Chicago, for thirty-six years. She has also taught in elementary and high schools, and in Mexico, Puerto Rico, the former Soviet Union, and Slovakia. Sandy is the author of the popular series Grammar in Context, now in its Fifth Edition. Sandy received her B.A. in Spanish and M.A. in Teaching English as a Second Language from the University of Illinois.

Confusing and full of typos

This book can be quite confusing at times, and is best used with a teacher in a class. It's not designed for self-study. There are quite a few errors in the book as well. The editor needs to go through it again and fix the mistakes. Some sections introduce a grammar point, and then offer NO practice for that point.

I used this textbook to tutor an adult ESL student over a period of 5 months. We both found the book's format and exercises very useful. At times, the sequencing seemed less than perfect, but it was easy to skip around among the chapters without any problems. I would use it again and/or recommend it to ESL students.

Intelligent design? Here, at least.

Extremely focused and accessible. Succinct and true to its title ("essentials"); does not try cover too much and thereby lose potency.

Exercises are well designed: consecutive sentences build on one another and form a narrative (vs. unrelated, unconnected sentences). Within exercises correct sentences are interspersed with incorrect, keeping students on their toes. Many exercise sentences are taken from authentic sources.

Lessons are illustrated clearly with target and non-target forms side by side for easy comparison. Good sentence level and paragraph level variation.

Answer-key in the back = lagniappe.
