About the Author
Anthony Mancuso is a corporations and limited liability company expert. He graduated from Hastings College of Law in San Francisco, is a member of the California State Bar, writes books and software in the fields of corporate and LLC law, and studies advanced business taxation at Golden Gate University in San Francisco. He has also been a consultant for Silicon Valley EDA (Electronic Design Automation) companies, most recently working on a C++ open-source integrated circuit database project team. He is the author of several Nolo books on forming and operating corporations (both profit and nonprofit) and limited liability companies. His titles include Incorporate Your Business, How to Form a Nonprofit Corporation (national and California editions), Form Your Own Limited Liability Company, The Corporate Records Handbook, and LLC or Corporation?. He wrote and programmed Nolo's LLC Maker and Incorporator Pro software programs, which generate state-by-state articles and other forms for organizing corporations and LLCs. His books and software have shown over a quarter of a million businesses and organizations how to form a corporation or LLC. He also is a licensed helicopter pilot and has performed for years as a guitarist in many musical idioms.

Solving a Potentially Big Problem

I've seen partnerships start up, full of promise and mutual love. I've seen very few last very long. And the breaking up of the partnership has usually been pretty messy. It's a lot like a divorce, where a pre-nuptial would have saved everybody a lot of pain.

This book first sets the stage by describing what can happen. What happens when one of the partners wants to quie, goes through a messy divorce (he's a good partner, but now you're partner with his ex!), or if he is simply disabled (alcohol or Alzheimer's).

The answer, of course, is advance planning. Business Buyout Agreements does a lot of this planning for you. It describes the situation, what should be included, all the things that you need to think about. In fact, it describes more situations than you are ever likely to think about in advance.

The book includes a CD-ROM which has a worksheet and a buyout agreement that has been successfully used by dozens if not hundreds of companies.

Nolo: Business Buyout Agreements

This is the fourth or fifth book published by Nolo that I've read. Nolo is a website that promises "Legal Solutions for You, Your Family & Your Business" and they do it in fairly plain language. I am not an attorney, but I work with attorneys all the time. Nolo lets me know what they're talking about (or going to be talking about) in the meetings and is invaluable as a research tool. I like the site and what they do ([...])

This book is about Business Buyout Agreements and its terrific. Buyouts are complex situations and they have to be done right early in the game when everyone is happy, healthy and convinced they are all going to get rich together forever. In short, the buyout agreements typically get done at the worst of all possible times, when partners don't know what they will one day have except a shared dream. The first section of the books describes situations, what it was and how it ended. There are a few nightmare scenarios mentioned, when divorce interferes, or one partner becomes disabled. It sparks the brain to thinking about the things that are unforeseen but do happen in life. Its very common that a partner dies and leaves their half of your business to their spouse who knows nothing about the business except that they now expect you to do all the work that you and your partner did.

There are solutions and the book does an excellent job of describing steps, whether to purchase life insurance (Entity or Stock Redemption), how they are structured and which would be better in certain situations. It doesn't have to be life insurance. There are insurance models that kick in on disability. There are planning techniques that can be applied and Nolo does a good job in educating the consumer on those techniques.

This book will not be confused with a law text. It is written for the consumer who wants to learn what they need to know and the book does an excellent job of doing just that. Well recommended.

About the Author
Carolyn Sobel is Professor Emerita of Linguistics, Hofstra University, New York where she is a past Area Coordinator (equivalent of a Department Chair) in both the Social Sciences and Creative Studies areas at the University’s New College. Dr. Sobel received her BA from Swarthmore College, and her PhD in linguistics from the Graduate Center of the City University of New York. Given her interest in language and the brain, she ultimately found it a short step from linguistics to cognitive science, a subject she introduced to New College. She has taught courses that range from linguistics to the structure of English words and sentences and from cognitive science to poetry.

Paul Li is Lecturer in Cognitive Science at the University of California, Berkeley. Paul earned his BA in cognitive neuroscience at UC Berkeley and completed his graduate studies in neuroscience at Columbia University, New York. He has written several excerpts for Scientific American Mind and is currently conducting research in neurodegenerative diseases at the Gladstone Institute in San Francisco. He has been invited to teach at several universities, including Seoul National University and Stanford University.

I must say I was pleasantly surprised by this textbook! This wonderfully written piece of work is saturated with details and knowledge of the new scientific frontier... the human brain. Whether you are a student, an educator, or someone who is a curious learner, this textbook has something to offer for everyone! You will not be disappointed!

Informative Read

Although this book is being used in colleges and universities as a primary textbook for relevant cognitive science courses, it is such a well written and organized book that any person interested in learning the subject or want to use it as a resource can do so.

Most textbooks tend to be dry but there is humor in this book and much of the content is presented in a very personal way. I used the first edition of this book and can say that this textbook only adds onto the last edition. The subject of Cognitive Science is an ever growing and changing field and the authors do justice by laying out all the ideas and concepts in a very visual and well written manner.

Bottom line: whether you are a student or someone interested in where cognitive science has come from and where it is going, check out the book and pass on the knowledge.

The book that turned me on to Cog Sci

Before I picked up this book, I was dead set on studying Computer Science as my academic discipline of choice while in college. Never before had I met a textbook that introduced me to a subject so easily comprehensible and exciting to read as this one. It makes the complex in cog sci extremely simple to understand. Better yet, the authors give so much historical context into the evolution of cog sci, you can't help but feel as if by merely reading the book you are following in the footsteps of giants. I will always attribute this book with giving me the very foundations to pursue a lifelong understanding of the mind.

I would solidly recommend this book to anyone who is either looking for a comprehensive introduction to the beauty of cognitive science or looking for a book to use for an introductory course in cog sci.

Literature book

There's only so much I can say about a book required for the class I am currently taking. I don't necessarily want it, however there are several good things I can say about it. The book is broken down into a curriculum format with supporting short stories, poems, and the like throughout. Aside from the format, finding a particular piece of literature is difficult. The table of contents is obviously set up in a fashion that shows the flow of educational material rather than where to find certain documents. To find whichever document required, you have to search each section of the table of contents until you find it.

Excellent resource

A book written by teachers for any English major or an aspiring teacher is instant credibility.

I used this book in class this semester and found it helpful as a refresher course in writing. The book incorporates a lot into teaching the fundamentals of English, writing essays (really important), making outlines and basically critical theory.

The example essays were extremely helpful. Typicall when it comes to these kind of books most of them typically just have the stories in the book and don't have much in the way of a list of things to ponder in the writing process.

Here though they really go step by step into all the writing essentials for the student. They also cover poetry and provide biographies of each author's work.

THe glossary at the end was also a smart thing to do. Again, unless you have an MLA handbook nearby sometimes these English book tend to leave out stuff and already assume you're ready to just dive into the stories.

The price is a bit heavy but I bought it used. The book covers more or less the 175h to 19th century of writers and poets with Shakespeare being covered as well. There's antique writings in here as well.

All in all I found it to be a really valuable source. If I was a teacher, I'd definitely would have this book in my collection.

About the Author
Kathy Heilenman held a joint appointment in French and Italian and Foreign and English as a Second Language Education at the University of Iowa. She was co-director of the Foreign Language Acquisition, Research, and Education Program, which houses a Ph.D. in Second Language Acquisition.

Isabelle Kaplan recently retired from the Isabelle Kaplan Center for Languages and Cultures at Bennington College, VT. She was the Vermont President of the AATF Chapter, a member of the Executive Board of the VFLA, and a Project Director for ACTFL. She remains an active member in the foreign language community, consulting for ACTFL, the Department of Defense, and several colleges and universities. She is also an oral proficiency tester and trainer.

Claude Toussaint Tournier is College Lecturer Emerita of French and Italian at Northwestern University. He previously served as first-year French program coordinator and teaching assistant supervisor at Northwestern University.

Book is fine, cd was very scratched with gunk on it. Not every track will play after I cleaned it up. Still, it was a good value for a language textbook.
