About the Author
Linda has pursued her interest in first and second language pronunciation for over forty years. She has taught ESL students at Georgia Tech, international teaching assistants at Emory University, and graduate students in applied linguistics at Georgia State University in Atlanta. Her special interests are applying pronunciation research to practice and integrating pronunciation into the oral communication curriculum. She is the author of two pronunciation texts, Well Said and Well Said Intro (National Geographic Cengage) and the editor of the teacher resource volume Pronunciation Myths (University of Michigan Press).

Useful teacher resource

I am a master's student in Applied Linguistics and Teaching ESL. I had to buy this textbook for a course, but I plan to keep it because it has so many activities for teaching both segmentals and suprasegmentals. I have also used it in tutoring students. I would prefer for some of the communicative practice activities to be more engaging, though.

About the Author

Paul D. Allison, Ph.D., is Professor of Sociology at the University of Pennsylvania where he teaches graduate courses in methods and statistics. He is also the founder and president of Statistical Horizons LLC which offers short courses on a wide variety of statistical topics.

After completing his doctorate in sociology at the University of Wisconsin, he did postdoctoral study in statistics at the University of Chicago and the University of Pennsylvania. He has published eight books and more than 60 articles on topics that include linear regression, log-linear analysis, logistic regression, structural equation models, inequality measures, missing data, and survival analysis.

Much of his early research focused on career patterns of academic scientists. At present, his principal research is on methods for analyzing longitudinal data, especially those for determining the causes and consequences of events, and on methods for handling missing data.

A former Guggenheim Fellow, Allison received the 2001 Lazarsfeld Award for distinguished contributions to sociological methodology. In 2010 he was named a Fellow of the American Statistical Association. He is also a two-time winner of the American Statistical Association’s award for “Excellence in Continuing Education.”

Sharlene Nagy Hesse-Biber (PhD, University of Michigan) is Professor of Sociology and Director of the Women’s Studies & Gender Studies Program at Boston College in Massachusetts. She has published widely on the impact of sociocultural factors on women’s body image, including her book Am I Thin Enough Yet? The Cult of Thinness and the Commercialization of Identity, which was selected as one of Choice Magazine’s best academic books for 1996. She has also written widely on methodological and methods issues, including the role of technology and emergent methods in social research. Dr. Hesse-Biber is co-editor of Emergent Methods in Social Research and the Handbook of Emergent Methods, as well as co-author of The Practice of Qualitative Research. She is also editor of the Handbook of Feminist Research: Theory and Praxis, which was selected as one of the Critics’ Choice Award winners by the American Education Studies Association and was also chosen as one of Choice Magazine’s Outstanding Academic titles for 2007. Usable book and computer files as promised

This guide takes you step-by-step through writing a well-organized handbook. The computer files are RTF format and load perfectly in MS Word. It's easy to cut and paste in blocks of text. Make no mistake, you'll have to rewrite many sentences for your company, but having the text is still faster than a full retype.

Absolutely delivers on the promises it advertises. Weeknesses are present. Could be a little more indepth on the legal side. Has many great tables about laws where you can look up your state's laws specifically but also is missing several tables that would be nice, and refers you to your state labor website instead...understandable, but could be more complete.

Uses "you/we" language in its text templates, which has a really large corporate stuffy feel to it, even if the language is kept simple. "We require you..." sort of feeling. I changed all 'we' to name of the company and while less 'personal' it actually sounds more team oriented. It's not hard to do since every sentence just has to be gone over anyway. Still, don't get the idea it's 'difficult,' using the templates is handy in many ways, quicker than retyping, and enforces a great outline organization for your handbook.

You can build a complete and good handbook with this and proper research within your company and about your state's laws. As they say, a lawyer will be a necessary part at some point if you want to be careful, but you may not need to pay one to read the whole thing, just to consult on sticky parts for your business or your state.

We'll finish our handbook within a month. I've heard of some small companies taking a year to complete one. I know this book has helped tremendously.

This Guide Has it All

This is a complete kit for making your company's own employee handbook. There is legal information, state specific information, resources to follow for your specific needs, and then, the best part of all, there is CD that comes with this that has everything you need already typed for you. All you have to do is insert the CD and save the files, which are in MS Word, and voila - you have it. The only thing you have to do is decide which policies you want for your company, fill in a few blanks, change the TOC and you are ready to print it out! A very practical and easy way to create your own employee handbook! I was quite impressed.

Very helpful reference

I am very pleased with this book. I was placed in charge of writing an employee handbook for a small office and this book (and accompanying CD-ROM) made my job very easy. The CD-ROM allows you to easily cut and paste most of the general verbage of the handbook - and customize to your needs. It is also very helpful in educating on laws. I highly recommend this for anyone taking on the task of creating an employee handbook.

The major strength of Teacher's Handbook is that it provides an appropriate balance between theory and practice. Foreign language teachers need to understand the theoretical foundations of language acquisition, AND see how theories associated with language teaching and learning translate into practice in realworld settings. The text presents important concepts, principles, standards, appraoches etc. in a format that can be easily understood and internalized. There are numerous concrete examples (e.g. Teach and Reflect; Chapter Case Studies; Chapter Figures and Tables) that illustrate practical applications. Additionally, the text covers the four skills (speaking, writing, listening comprehension, and reading) and culture in an integrated way. I consider Teacher's Handbook to be a foundational text for students; a text that provides a theoretical and practical foundation upon which language teachers (present and future) will continue to build through research, teaching experience, and self-reflection and analysis. The text is particularly beneficial for pre-service foreign language teachers.

About the Author
Judith L. Shrum earned her Ph. D. from The Ohio State University and an M.A. in Latin American Studies from Indiana University in Bloomington, IN. She is professor emerita at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, where she directed the Second Language Teacher Education program for 31 years until her retirement in 2012. She was awarded the ACTFL-NYSAFLT Anthony Papalia Award for Excellence in Teacher Education in 2008. Currently, she is the coordinator for ACTFL to the Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation (CAEP).

Eileen W. Glisan earned her Ph.D. in Applied Spanish Linguistics and Teaching Methodology from the University of Pittsburgh. She is Distinguished University Professor of Spanish and Foreign Language Education at Indiana University of Pennsylvania, where she is coordinator of the Spanish Education K-12 Program. She is the recipient of various awards, including the 2008 Nelson H. Brooks Award for Outstanding Leadership in the Profession by the Northeast Conference on the Teaching of Foreign Languages. She is past president of the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL).

Theoretically a Good Book

I read this book in a teacher's book study. Although it certainly addressed all of the current philosophies of language learning, inclusion,contextualizing, giving detailed feedback, etc., the main thing I remember from that book study is how glad I was not to be still in graduate school having to read things like this regularly. It was heavy on theory and short on practical, usable suggestions for the actual teacher having to deal with discipline issues, keeping the kids entertained and motivated, and coping with paperwork while instructing. The prose was dense and unapproachable. I can see that a lot of effort was put into the book, but I hope any future editions will take the practicing teacher into account. It takes a lot of time and effort to put together a stimulating language class. Reading this book took more time than it was worth in terms of practical information.

Excellent for both novice and veteran teachers

As someone who has taught foreign languages for 20 years and headed up a university foreign language department for nine years, I suspected I had fallen into ruts and needed a fresh overview of current theory and practice. The book met my needs perfectly. In fact, I will be rereading it. Highly recommended.

About the Author
Sandra N. Elbaum was an ESL Instructor at Truman College, one of the City Colleges of Chicago, for thirty-six years. She has also taught in elementary and high schools, and in Mexico, Puerto Rico, the former Soviet Union, and Slovakia. Sandy is the author of the popular series Grammar in Context, now in its Fifth Edition. Sandy received her B.A. in Spanish and M.A. in Teaching English as a Second Language from the University of Illinois.
