About the Author
Prisca Augustyn is an Associate Professor of German and Linguistics at Florida Atlantic University, where she has been in charge of German since 2002. Prisca teaches courses in German, linguistics, and semiotics. Her interest in how we form subjective models of the world through language informs not only her research in linguistics/semiotics, but finds expression in the development of teaching materials and methods for the classroom. She and her co-author Nikolaus Euba (University of California, Berkeley) recently finished the third edition of Stationen, a textbook for intermediate German.

Selected as the AATG 2013 Post Secondary Outstanding Educator, Nikolaus Euba holds an M.A. degree in "Deutsch als Fremdsprache" from the Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität in Munich. Before coming to California, he taught and coordinated German courses at Miami University (Ohio) and the University of South Carolina. At Berkeley, he directs the German Language Program and mentors the Graduate Student Instructors who teach language courses. His research interests focus on integrating (literary) texts into foreign language teaching and learning, a topic on which he frequently develops workshops and gives presentations. He is a consultant to the College Board's AP program in German and to the National Evaluation Series (NES). After having directed and taught numerous summer study workshops in Heidelberg, Jena, and Berlin, he now coordinates the language program at FUBiS (Freie Universität Berlin in the Summer). He is a recipient of the Star Award for Excellent Service to the Student Community (1998), of the Mortar Board Excellence in Teaching Award (2001) and of UC Berkeley's Faculty Award for Outstanding Mentorship of GSIs (2007).

Finally a language book that actually explains the language you are trying to learn. This book is just great. I am using it in conjunction with my college and I can honestly say that I do not need my teacher at all since this book is so thorough and easy to read.

Fun, interesting, good

I have only started this book but I'm already glad I bought it. Each chapter refers to a different city and by studying it you learn a lot about that city, the people, the history, interesting facts etc. The book also has exercises though most of them are to be done with others. It also has a website you can go to to listen to recordings and answer questions about what you heard (not easy ones for me), and also questions to do at the end of the chapter (online) to see how well you do.

I'm only at the beginning but I recommend this book, lots of interesting facts while you learn. Not one of those books that puts you to sleep before you learn anything at all.

Whoops is no mistake!

I only wish this book had been out years ago when I decided to venture off into the world of start-ups. This book is a fantastic read if you are thinking of turning your passion into your own business. My suggestion for anyone thinking of starting their own company is to first buy this book and then think deeply about the risks involved, and if you still think they are truly worth it, then read this book AGAIN! Most people don't know that the chances of a start-up succeeding are pretty slim. However, if you are still convinced that your idea is brilliant and that starting up your own company is what you want to do then this book is a must have.

The book explains some of the obstacles that you will encounter and examines both the mundane and the meticulous details you will need to think about while trying to set up shop and navigate your way through the heady world of business ~ all while trying to get paid! The best part about Whoops is that it is optimistic yet honest in its assessment of starting up a new company. A very important fact Whoops touches upon, which is often overlooked is that perseverance alone isn't enough to keep your company in business. If you decide to take the plunge don't do it without Whoops!

Court cases are never as quick and tidy as television dramas would have us believe. In fact, most civil disputes are settled long before a judge has a chance to pound a gavel. That's why pretrial fact-finding procedures such as depositions play an increasingly important role in legal quarrels. In fact, it's not uncommon for a deposition to be the only testimony given. All of this explains why Nolo's Deposition Handbook can be such a useful resource. For the uninitiated, depositions are the process that enable either party in a lawsuit to question the other, as well as other witnesses, under oath before a trial begins. To prepare readers, authors (and attorneys) Paul Bergman and Albert Moore do a commendable job of dealing with real-life issues, such as what to do--and not to do--in preparation for a deposition, what to do if you're asked to bring documents to a deposition, how far you can be required to travel, and how to deal with trick questions that many lawyers love to ask. Three "Golden Rules" are also offered to help people through the deposition process. Put simply, the rules are to listen to the entire question and then answer only that question; answer truthfully and completely; and if you don't understand a question, don't answer it. About the Author
Albert Moore, a member of the California State Bar since 1978, is a law professor at the UCLA School of Law and the co-author of Trial Advocacy: Inferences, Arguments and Trial Techniques (West Publishing).

Paul Bergman is a Professor of Law at the UCLA School of Law and a recipient of a University Distinguished Teaching Award. His recent books include Reel Justice: The Courtroom Goes to the Movies (Andrews & McMeel); Trial Advocacy: Inferences, Arguments, Techniques (with Moore and Binder, West Publishing Co.); and Represent Yourself In Court and The Criminal Law Handbook (both with Berman-Barrett, Nolo). He has also published numerous articles in law journals, and regularly gives presentations on how law and lawyers are portrayed in film.

Complete Text and Handy Introductory Guide

As a monitor of the information desk at the Harold Washington Library, Chicago's main library, I regularly make referrals to people looking for all kinds of information. Whenever I'm asked about books on depositions, the first one that comes to mind is "The Deposition Handbook: A Guide To Help You Give A Winning Deposition," by Virginia A. Lathan.

But recently I also came across this book, "Nolo's Deposition Handbook," and I'm thoroughly impressed by the in-depth information it contains on all aspects of the deposition process. Not only is the book well written, but it also has a useful glossary for readily looking up legal terms. It also contains numerous examples of what the author is trying to convey. Additionally, it's well indexed. I particularly found the appendices helpful, because they contain excerpts from the Federal Rules of Civil Procedure and also web site addresses for obtaining information about discovery rules for particular states. I think this book would be a tremendous asset for parties to a lawsuit, people who represent themselves in court, and even lawyers who need to refresh themselves on the many aspects of depositions.

However, because the book is so thorough, I will still recommend people check out Virginia Lathan's book. Her simple-and-concise book reminds me of "Cliff Notes," those handy little pamphlets that highlight key points and make it easier to navigate your way through the voluminous writings of complete texts. For that reason, I suggest that you consider purchasing both books, because when thy're used in unison, you'll have all the reference books you need to help you give a winning deposition.

As a matter of fact, in one of his other books, "Represent Yourself in Court" (2nd edition), Paul Bergman highly praised Virginia Lathan's "Deposition Handbook."

outline for fast pace reader

As typical from Nolo press writers, this is a very effective book well structured and with useful materials.
The framework given is very practical and applicable. I strongly recommend for anyone involved in a deposition.
Just to give the proof, it helped me to face 3 days of deposition by a nasty attorney as under handed as you can get....I survived it.
Thanks to the authors and in all cases, be prepared !

Detailed, Authoritative, Organized, and Interesting!

The two authors are law professors at UCLA, and their talent for weaving essential content into mnemonic, entertaining bites shines in this book. I'm not personally familiar with the law faculty at UCLA, but most likely they don't retain the ignorant and misinformed, in turn implying that these folks must know what they are writing about.

General ideas are followed by nutshell examples that fix the concept in mind in a way easily remembered. Names in the examples are simply charming. For example, there is Jerry Atric and a wrongfully discharged employee named Mal Treeted. We also hear the brief story of a software contractor named Evan Elpus suing Mackrosoft and deposing vice president Jenny Daynow and the President, Noah Way. Stupid, yes, and also funny.

I'm mostly interested in the single chapter specifically for expert witnesses, easily worth the price of the entire book for me. For example, the tip about preparation for a deposition cautions about what documents to review and not review. Anything you review to refresh your recollection is discoverable. Documents otherwise not available to the other side may thus become available if you carelessly refer to them in preparation for a deposition. Small detail, but potentially vital. Generally, any documents in your file you bring to a deposition are subject to discovery and the other attorney is apt to have copies made of the entire file. Other advice is to keep a chronological file so you can keep dates and times easily reportable. There are many more nuggets for expert witnesses, although this is only one chapter.

Part one is for deponents: 1) Overview, 2) Use in a Lawsuit, 3) Preparation, 4) Responding to Questions, 5) Beginnings, "the usual admonitions", 6) Background questions, 7) Refusing to answer questions, and 8) Expert witnesses.

Part 2 is doing depositions when you represent yourself. Although interesting to read, if I were ever involved in a lawsuit important enough to involve depositions, I would want an attorney representing me. Even if depositions were not involved, if it is a lawsuit, I would personally want to be represented by an attorney.

About the Author
Lorraine C. Smith has taught ESL for over 30 years. She has also taught TESOL Methods and Research courses at the graduate level. She has presented for 20 years at local, national, and international TESOL conferences. She holds Masters degrees in Linguistics and in TESOL, and earned her doctorate in Curriculum and Teaching at Teachers College Columbia University. In addition to coauthoring the Reading for Today series, she has written other ESL textbooks, journal articles and book chapters. She is currently the Associate Director of the English Language Institute at Queens College of the City University of New York.

Nancy Nici Mare received an MA in Applied Linguistics from CUNY Queens College, where she is an instructor at the English Language Institute. In addition to teaching all ESL skills, including reading, writing, speaking and listening, to students ranging from beginners to advanced, she has also served as a master teacher to many students in the practicum class in the MA Applied Linguistics program at QC. Recently, she developed an online advanced ESL writing course, which she subsequently taught to students in Vietnam. She is one of the two authors of the Reading for Today series that includes Themes, Insights, Issues, Concepts and Topics.

About the Author
Ralph "Jake" Warner,widely recognized as a pioneer of the do-it-yourself law movement, Warner founded Nolo with Ed Sherman in 1972. He began publishing do-it-yourself law books written by him and his colleagues after numerous publishers rejected them. Warner holds a law degree from Boalt Hall School of Law at the University of California at Berkeley and an undergraduate degree from Princeton.

Denis Clifford, a graduate of Columbia Law School, where he was an editor of The Law Review, is a lawyer who specializes in estate planning. He is the author of many Nolo titles including Quick and Legal Will Book and Make Your Own Living Trust and co-author of Plan Your Estate and A Legal Guide for Lesbian and Gay Couples. He has been interviewed by such major media as The New York Times, Los Angeles Times, and Money Magazine.

This is a good, well written

Back in the 70's I was a senior business consultant, and paralegal for a group of attorneys. Though I didn't finish law school, I have a few thousand dollars in NOLO press books. I used them in the legal offices, and they were much easier to understand then the formal law books.

I personally had my own law research library, and yet exclusively refereed to the NOLO books. Even many attorneys used them too. This is a good, well written, easy to understand publication written in nontechnical language, You just can't go wrong with their books if they cover the subjects you need I have most all of their books on my shelf now, and update their corporations, and business related books like this Partnership one when I need to keep abreast of current information for my clients.

Disclaimer needed?

The title says "Form a Partnership: The Complete Legal guide" - I'm about halfway through the book, in Chapt. 9 p. 164 - (exact words) "CAUTION: This chapter does not enable you to prepare a legal partnership yourself. This chapter does not include samples clauses for actually drafting a limited partnership agreement. In the absence of any excellent self help materials on the subject, you'll definitely need to see a lawyer."
I'll let you decide what that makes this book. - So if this isn't considered excellent self help material, what is it, trivia?

Nolo does it again

Over the years, I've used many different Nolo books. This was consistent with the rest of them. Clear writing, good structure. It's hard to wax poetic about a book on this topic, but it did the job well for me. Good luck with your partnership ventures.

About the Author

Peter G. Northouse, PhD, is Professor Emeritus of Communication in the School of Communication at Western Michigan University. In addition to publications in professional journals, he is the author of Leadership: Theory and Practice (now in its seventh edition) and Introduction to Leadership: Concepts and Practice (now in its third edition) and coauthor of Health Communication: Strategies for Health Professionals (now in its third edition). His scholarly and curricular interests include models of leadership, leadership assessment, ethical leadership, and leadership and group dynamics. For more than 30 years, he has taught courses in leadership, interpersonal communication, and organizational communication to both undergraduate and graduate students. Currently, he is a consultant and lecturer on trends in leadership research, leadership development, and leadership education. He holds a doctorate in speech communication from the University of Denver, and master’s and bachelor’s degrees in communication education from Michigan State University.

Craig E. Johnson (PhD, University of Denver) is emeritus professor of leadership studies at George Fox University, Newberg, Oregon, where he taught undergraduate and graduate courses in leadership, ethics, management and communication. During his time at the university he served as director of the George Fox Doctor of Business Administration program and chair of the Department of Communication Arts. Though retired from full-time teaching, Johnson continues to serve as an adjunct professor. He is the author of Organizational Ethics: A Practical Approach (also published by Sage) and co-author, with Michael Z. Hackman, of Leadership: A Communication Perspective. His research findings, instructional ideas, and book reviews have been published in the Journal of Leadership Studies, the Journal of Leadership and Organizational Studies, the Journal of Leadership Education, Academy of Management Learning and Education, the International Leadership Journal, Communication Quarterly, Communication Reports, and other journals. In 2016 he received the George Fox University outstanding graduate faculty researcher award.  Johnson has led and participated in service and educational trips to Honduras, Kenya, Rwanda, New Zealand, China, and Brazil and has held volunteer leadership positions in a variety of religious and nonprofit organizations. In addition to  teaching and writing, he enjoys working out, reading, fly-fishing, watching sports, and spending time with family.
