Virginia Hill Rice, PhD, RN, CS, FAAN is Professor of Nursing at the Wayne State University College of Nursing and Professor of Oncology at the Wayne State University College of Medicine and the Karmonos Cancer Institute. She received the Nightingale Award for Excellence in Nursing Research and Midwest Nursing Research Society’s Stress and Coping Research Section’s Advancement of Science in Stress and Coping Award. Fantastic Leadership & Team Building Directive

In terms of building a team the authors give various insights, strategies, and scenarios on the best ways to develop and build a team, taking into consideration the type of team required for the type of leadership established. Excellent for the continuing growth of the times and the future.

I also had Dr. Gamble as a professor and it was an honor to have the professor who wrote her own book giving lecture.

About the Author
Richard Alan Korb received his Ph.D. in Germanic Literature from the University of Pittsburgh in 1988. He has been teaching at Columbia University in New York City since 1994. As senior lecturer and German language program director, he specializes in pedagogy and teacher training, offering elementary, intermediate, and advanced German courses for undergraduates.

Money-grab edition

I'm in a class with people using both the fifth and sixth editions of this book, and the changes seem to be entirely superficial and intended primarily to make it hard for instructors to let students buy used copies of older editions. (The sixth edition does things like change the order of the translation exercises without substantially changing their content.) That's just inexcusable, as this book could use some substantive changes.

I've never taken German before, and I sailed through the exercises in the first few chapters with no problem at all. Then suddenly at around chapter 8, I found myself having to look up every fourth word in the longer passages. The vocabulary glosses under these passages are totally insufficient when the passages employ grammatical structures you haven't been taught yet and words that haven't been introduced in the little end-of-chapter vocabulary sections (which strangely often repeat words from previous chapters). This seems like a minor complaint, but it's really hard to look up German words in a dictionary when you're dealing with separable prefixes, irregular verbs (especially before the book teaches you how to break them down to find the stem in a participle), compound nouns, and all those little words with multiple meanings. I don't expect learning to translate to be easy, but I do expect the textbook to help me out. In one particularly egregious example, the book defines the adjective angestellt (employed) when the actual word in the passage is the noun Angestellter. So does the noun mean "employer" or "employee" -- or something else altogether? Why even have the gloss if it's not for the right word? In that same passage, the book gives no gloss for the word "Kleist-Preis," which turns out to be a prize named after Heinrich von Kleist, which you would only know if you happen to follow German literary competitions. I spent forever trying to figure out what a kleist was.

I realize teaching vocabulary is difficult, but at the very least, this book could use an appendix on how to use German-English dictionaries. I got a large one recommended by my professor, and I have a hard time with it because the abbreviations are all in German.

Good Reading Knowledge book

I used this book for an intensive course I just taught, and found it to be very effective and useful for my students, who seemed to like it as well. It does bring in material into the exercises before formally introducing it (as another reviewer mentioned), but besides the fact that this would probably be impossible to avoid, it does teach the students to follow their instincts and use guessing strategies. This is actually part of the book's aim.

The one area where I would say the book still needs some improvement is vocabulary. In order to read efficiently students need to learn a considerable base vocabulary by heart, and besides a few tips and short vocab sections at the end of each chapter, there aren't that many learning aids built in for word memorization. This could possibly be integrated into an online resource (which already exists for the texts and exercise sentences). Also, it shouldn't be so expensive! It is just a paperback with no illustrations. The book still gets 5 stars, though, because the grammar is very accessible and the exercises are just the right difficulty as the students progress.

A note about editions: I had a student using the 5th edition, and he found it was only marginally different than the 6th. Some of the exercise sentences were slightly modified or the order was switched. The difference between the 4th and 5th was much more significant, as we found when one student tried to use that one.

Not worth the money

Note: I am a PhD student in Greek and Latin using this to take a German reading course.

1. There does not seem to be a big difference between this and the 5th edition. People in my class use either one; using the 5th just requires some vigilance concerning page numbers and assignments.
2. This book is not constructed well enough to be $70. It is already all bent up and I am not even done with it.
3. The grammar is presented in a largely narrative fashion, which may work for some students, but I would prefer a more straightforward layout of charts with a few examples. Readings are a mixed bag, which is usual for a book meant to teach students of all disciplines to read academic material in German.
4. That said, it is convenient to have the online guide with grammar charts and answer keys. Use this.

My advice: get this from the library for your class or borrow from a friend. Be careful since as I said it is easy to bend. Return it when you are done. For future reading rely on the grammar section in Collin's Gem dictionary, for example, which has everything laid out very nicely.

Loida Lewis is a former INS attorney with over 15 years experience handling U.S. immigration matters. Co-author of How to Get a Green Card, she is licensed to practice law in both New York and the Philippines.

Shallow book with no real information

I am lawyer from Brazil, and wanted to get real information about the green card application process (without having to go through the dry explanation in the INS website) and was completely disapointed and upset when I received this book. It does not cover anything in depth, and wastes a lot of time talking about temporary visas, fiance visas (I thougt it was supposed to explain about greencards!), special greencards for amerasians (which is not a very common situation)...

As for what I was really interested in, which was the green card application process for work-related reasons, there is a small, incomplete paragraph and a suggestion that I find an attorney!!!!

Waste of money, useless -- if you want to get a green card, either find another book, check the INS website, or hire a lawyer, this book will not help at all.

About the Author
Hannelore received her PhD in eighteenth-century French Literature at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Jarausch is a senior lecturer in French and director of the French Language Program at UNC-Chapel Hill. She teaches courses in methodology, language, and literature, and has authored an advanced intermediate text. She was named Foreign Language Teacher of the Year (Higher Education) in 2009-2010 by the Foreign Language Association of North Carolina. Jarausch's research interests focus on language teaching and teaching assistant training. She has presented at ACTFL, Central States, and the Foreign Language Association of North Carolina.

Clare Tufts received her PhD in French literature from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1981. She is the professor of the Practice of Romance Studies and director of the French Language Program at Duke University. She has published articles on language acquisition and pedagogy, the modern political theatre in France, Alfred Jarry, and political propaganda in French cartoons. In 1990, her computer tutorial Micro-Review in French was published by Holt, Rinehart and Winston. Professor Tufts's research interests include second-language acquisition, modern French theatre, and popular culture.

I really like how there are answers in the back to about half of the exercises. It helps you learn but you are not always just cheating when you get lazy. It is very appropriate for the class that I am in, French 203 (also called 201 at some schools).

About the Author
Leslie Laud has differentiated math instruction in her own classroom and in her co-teaching with her math colleagues, and has been doing so for almost two decades. She teaches an online course on Differentiated Middle School Math Instruction at Bank Street College of Education. Additionally, she has presented at many conferences both nationally and internationally, including The National Council of Teachers of Mathematics annual conference. She has also published many articles in leading journals such as Educational Leadership and Teaching Exceptional Children. She currently leads staff development groups with teachers in school systems in the Boston area. She received both her doctorate in curriculum and instruction and her master’s in special education from Teachers College, Columbia University.

About the Author

Russell K. Schutt, PhD, is Professor and Chair of Sociology at the University of Massachusetts, Boston, where he received the 2007 Chancellor’s Award for Distinguished Service. Since 1990, he has also been Lecturer on Sociology in the Department of Psychiatry (Beth Israel-Deaconess Medical Center) at the Harvard Medical School. He completed his BA, MA, and PhD degrees at the University of Illinois at Chicago and was a Postdoctoral Fellow in the Sociology of Social Control Training Program at Yale University. In addition to seven editions of the text on which this brief edition is based, Investigating the Social World: The Process and Practice of Research, and four other coauthored versions—for the fields of social work, criminal justice, psychology, and education—he is the author of the new book, Homelessness, Housing, and Mental Illness, and of Organization in a Changing Environment, coeditor of the Organizational Response to Social Problems, and coauthor of Responding to the Homeless: Policy and Practice. He has authored and coauthored numerous journal articles, book chapters, and research reports on homelessness, mental health, organizations, law, and teaching research methods. He currently directs an evaluation of a Massachusetts Department of Public Health coordinated care program. His primary research focuses on social factors that shape the impact of housing, employment, and services for severely mentally ill persons and on the service preferences of homeless persons and service personnel. He has also studied influences on well-being, satisfaction, and cognitive functioning; processes of organizational change and the delivery of case management; decision making in juvenile justice and in union admissions; political participation; media representations of mental illness; and HIV/AIDS prevention.

Using it for my undergraduate course...

After looking over several prominent textbooks for my undergraduate research methods course, I decided to use this one. I appreciate the difficulty of trying to convey the wide range of philosophical and methodological approaches within sociology to students, and I think the introductory chapters accomplish this reasonably well-though of course in a somewhat simplified form.

Weaknesses: Because the chapters refer to examples from previous chapters (a good thing, mostly), it is a bit difficult to rearrange the order in which you teach the chapters.

I suspect many social science instructors would sidestep some of the previous reviewer's concerns about "hard science." That said, the section on quantitative analysis tries to do too much in too few pages. I don't plan on using it.

When having to do research, this is a fantastic intro. Slightly tedious and drawn out, but necessary for those putting together research proposals in the sociological field.

Easy to Understand

One of the things that really helped was the small extra features like vocab words and their definitions in the margins as well as little "did you know" kind of things that talks about real world use. The only downside of the book was that it's made of a flimsy magazine style paper which results in it getting damaged and bent really easily.
