About the Author
Bob Garrett is a Visiting Scholar at California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo. He was Professor of Psychology at DePauw University in Greencastle, Indiana, and held several positions there, including Chairperson of the Department of Psychology, Faculty Development Coordinator, and Interim Dean of Academic Affairs. He received his BA from the University of Texas at Arlington and his MA and PhD from Baylor University. He received further training in the Department of Physiology at Baylor University College of Medicine and at the Aeromedical Research Primate Laboratory, Holloman Air Force Base. Bob and his wife, Duejean, live on a 3,200-acre ranch they share with 47 other families in the hills outside San Luis Obispo. Their two sons, daughter-in-law, and three beautiful grandchildren all live nearby.

About the Author
Marilyn Lichtman is a retired professor of educational research and evaluation from Virginia Tech at both the main campus in Blacksburg, Virginia, and at the graduate campus in Falls Church, Virginia. After attending The University of Chicago as an undergraduate, she moved to Washington, D.C. She completed all her degrees at The George Washington University, receiving her doctorate in educational research. She taught both qualitative and quantitative research courses while at The Catholic University of America and Virginia Tech. She is a regular user of the Internet and social media and was an early contributor to teaching qualitative courses online. She is currently on the editorial boards of The Qualitative Report and Forum: Qualitative Social Research (FQS), both online journals devoted to qualitative issues. She has served as a consultant to many school systems, private companies, and government agencies. She has traveled extensively throughout the world. Currently she serves on the docent council at the Corcoran gallery of Art in Washington, D.C.

About the Author
Victor C. Strasburger is Chief of the Division of Adolescent Medicine, Distinguished Professor of Pediatrics, and Professor of Family and Community Medicine at the University of New Mexico. He graduated from Yale College, where he studied fiction writing with Robert Penn Warren, and from Harvard Medical School. He trained at the Children's Hospital in Seattle, St. Mary's Hospital Medical School in London, and the Boston Children's Hospital. He has authored more than 160 articles and papers and 12 books on the subject of adolescent medicine and the effects of television on children and adolescents. In 2000, he was recipient of the American Academy of Pediatrics' Adele Delenbaugh Hofmann Award for outstanding lifetime achievement in Adolescent Medicine and the Holroyd-Sherry Awrd for outstanding achievement in public health and the media. He is a consultant to the American Academy of Pediatrics' Committee on Communications, has served as a consultant to the National PTA and the American Medical Association on the subject of children and television, and lectures frequently throughout the country.

Barbara J. Wilson is the Executive Vice Provost of Faculty and Academic Affairs at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC) and also the Kathryn Lee Baynes Dallenbach Professor in the Department of Communication at UIUC. Her research focuses on the social and psychological effects of the media on youth. She is coauthor of three book volumes of the National Television Violence Study (1997–1998).She also co-edited the Handbook of Children, Media, and Development (Wiley-Blackwell, 2008), and has published over 100 articles, chapters, and technical reports on media effects and their implications for media policy. She currently serves on the editorial boards of five academic journals, including Media Psychology and the Journal of Media and Children. In 2008, she was elected as Fellow of the International Communication Association. She has served as a research consultant for Nickelodeon, the National Association of Television Program Executives, Discovery Channel Pictures, and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Amy B. Jordan is director of the Media and the Developing Child sector of the Annenberg Public Policy Center of the University of Pennsylvania, where she oversees research on children's media policy. Her studies have examined the implementation and public reception of the educational television mandate known as the Three-Hour Rule, the V-Chip legislation, the American Academy of Pediatrics' media use recommendations and the industry's efforts to self-regulate food marketing to children. Dr. Jordan has published the findings of her research in dozens of peer-reviewed journal articles and book chapters, and has edited special issues of academic journals, including the Journal of Applied Developmental Psychology, The Annals of the American Academy of Political and Social Science, and The Bulletin. Dr. Jordan is the recipient of the International Communication Association's Best Applied/Policy Research Award and the National Communication Association's Stanley L. Saxon Applied Research Award.

I am only reading this since I have to for school. Over all I find the book to be terrible it is just the authors use of opinions found by other research all put into one place... I dont find the book really saying much except to parrot back someone elses hard work.

This book is not what I was expecting. It's an overly simplified explanation of library research that doesn't offer much by way of useful information, giving just enough information to make a researcher dangerous but not enough to make him good. Tensen tries to explain things, but ultimately, it's clear she's not a librarian.

About the Author
Ralph "Jake" Warner,widely recognized as a pioneer of the do-it-yourself law movement, Warner founded Nolo with Ed Sherman in 1972. He began publishing do-it-yourself law books written by him and his colleagues after numerous publishers rejected them. Warner holds a law degree from Boalt Hall School of Law at the University of California at Berkeley and an undergraduate degree from Princeton.

As Nolo's managing editor, Portman oversees editorial work on all Nolo books. She specializes in residential and commercial landlord/tenant law, legal issues related to courts, landlords and tenants, and neighbor disputes. She is the author or co-author of Every Landlord's Legal Guide, Every Landlord's Guide to Finding Great Tenants, Every Tenant's Legal Guide, Renters' Rights, Negotiate the Best Lease for Your Business, Leases & Rental Agreements, The California Landlord's Law Book and California Tenants' Rights. Portman received undergraduate and graduate degrees from Stanford University and a law degree from Santa Clara University. Before joining Nolo in 1994, she practiced law as a public defender.

David Brown practices law in the Monterey, California area, where he has represented both landlords and tenants in hundreds of court cases -- most of which he felt could have been avoided if both sides were more fully informed about landlord/tenant law. Brown, a graduate of Stanford University (chemistry) and the University of Santa Clara Law School, also teaches law at the Monterey College of Law and is the author of Fight Your Ticket (CA version), Beat Your Ticket (the national version), The Landlord's Law Book, Vol. 1: Rights and Responsibilities; The Landlord's Law Book, Vol. 2: Evictions and co-author of How to Change Your Name in California and The Guardianship Book for California.

Well Organized & Thorough

Really well written and organized. The book does cover the majority of what you'd want it to, and you can easily find what you're looking for if it's in there.

This book does address the legal issues I was concerned about very well. It's a good refference to have around, but a quick glance at the TOC will let you know if it covers the topic you're worried about right now.

It does not have everything you might expect though. Some forms that it lacks: rental receipts, year end statements, maintenance requests.

This book won't save you from ever having to create some of your own forms again.

Great Book

This book is great tool for to making sure you are doing everything right and for preventing future problems because you didn't do something you were required to do. Now I have confidance that I am following the California laws, there are some things I wasn't doing that I will now do. I like that this book is based on California law since all my rentals are in Calif. The provided forms and CD version are very useful. Switched all my master leases and documentation to the ones provided on the CD. After reading and using the forms I feel this book is worth ten time its purchase price and probably will save me from a lot of future problems. I like how the author gives you what to watch out for and advise and guidance, not just the law for you to interpert yourself.

Had an older version that was good but this oneis even better. The CD with all of the forms is much more convenient than tearing out and copying like we had to do with the old book.

About the Author

Dawn M. McBride is a professor of psychology at Illinois State University, where she has taught research methods since 1998. Her research interests include automatic forms of memory, false memory, prospective memory, and forgetting. In addition to research methods, she teaches courses in introductory psychology, cognition and learning, and human memory, and a graduate course in experimental design. She is a recipient of the Illinois State University Teaching Initiative Award and the ISU SPA/Psi Chi Jim Johnson Award for commitment to undergraduate mentorship, involvement, and achievement. Her nonacademic interests include spending time with her family, traveling, watching Philadelphia sports teams (her place of birth), and reading British murder mysteries. She earned her PhD in cognitive psychology from the University of California, Irvine, and her BA from the University of California, Los Angeles.

Buy the old version if you have to buy it at all.

Buy the previous version if you need this book for a course. Nothing significant changed. Don't buy this book if a professor doesn't require it. It's terrible. Repetitive, bland, uninteresting. It's like reading a technical manual written by someone with short-term memory loss.

About the Author
Joseph F. Healey is Professor Emeritus of Sociology at Christopher Newport University in Virginia. He received his PhD in sociology and anthropology from the University of Virginia. An innovative and experienced teacher of numerous race and ethnicity courses, he has written articles on minority groups, the sociology of sport, social movements, and violence, and he is also the author of Statistics: A Tool for Social Research (10th ed., 2014).

Excellent book

I ordered this book for a college course, but I feel it would be useful and thought-provoking even outside of an academic setting. This is one textbook that is well worth reading from cover to cover. Healey writes in such a way that is both easy to read and comprehend, yet full of a wealth of information. This book has sparked my interest in Sociology, and even though I'm a Psychology major, I will definitely be taking more Sociology courses! I am glad I chose to purchase instead of rent this book, because it may prove to be a useful reference in future college classes.

Great book. Healy obviously researched his material and was not afraid to write some unflattering truths. Worth the money. You will reference this material many times as you continue your college career. Kudos to Mr. Healy!

Good choice by the instructor

Even though the chapters are pretty long, they are easy to go through and understand. I got the book for my Race, Ethnicity and Diversity class, and my professor makes a pretty good job at discussing each chapter in class. At the beginning of each chapter there are real life stories to introduce the subject and it is a great way to catch the readers attention from the beginning.
