About the Author
Dr. Rita Ch-Ying Chung is a Professor in the Counseling & Development Program at George Mason University. Her work has focused on cross-cultural issues in psychology and counseling, social justice in mental health, immigrant and refugee mental health and psychosocial adjustment, and child trafficking. Dr. Chung has worked in Asia, the Caribbean, Europe, Latin America, and the Pacific Rim and is a regularly invited speaker at national and international conferences. She has written over 80 journal articles and book chapters and co-authored a book entitled, Counseling Refugees: A Psychosocial Approach to Innovative Multicultural Interventions. Dr. Chung has won numerous awards for her work.
Dr. Fred Bemak is a Professor in the Counseling & Development Program at George Mason University as well as the Founder and Director of the Diversity Research and Action Center and the organization Counselors Without Borders. He has directed federal, state, and privately funded human services programs, and has done consultation, training, and research with culturally diverse populations and public and private human services organizations locally, nationally, and internationally. Dr. Bemak has published extensively in the fields of cross-cultural and multicultural psychology and counseling, working with at-risk youth, and immigrant and refugee mental health and psychosocial adjustment and held faculty appointments in Brazil and Australia, held two Fulbright scholarships, a Kellogg International Fellowship, and a World Rehabilitation Fund Fellowship. He has the recipient of numerous awards including the American Counseling Association Gilbert and Kathleen Wrenn Award for a Humanitarian and Caring Person.

Every Counseling Program Should Require this Book

I had the privilege of taking classes taught by the authors who have built a social justice centered counseling program. They are so knowledgeable about the topic as it has been their life's work and that knowledge is very evident in the readings. Every program should require this book and a social justice class. Why should we counsel client after client facing the same social injustice without trying to fix the real problems?

Eye opening

Well written book that kept my interest that opened my eyes to the struggles that peoples of different ethnicities and their families have to work through. It also helped open my eyes to the fact that even though I am white European American I too have ethnicities. What I learned will help me to be a more honest, compassionate and insightful therapist.

Students like it.

I like this book. I use it with two others in a class I teach. The students seem to migrate towards this book more than the other two, and this books seems to be the topic of many class discussions. The students like how the material is presented in the text and prefer to use this book over the other two.
