About the Author
Richard Gargiulo is a Professor of Special Education in the School of Education at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. He has a Master's degree and Ph.D. from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. In 1999, he was awarded the University's President's Award for Excellence in Teaching. He has also served as a Fulbright Scholar to the Czech Republic and has authored numerous books on the subjects of special education, early childhood education, and child abuse and neglect.

About the Author

Marcia L. Tate, EdD, is the former executive director of professional development for the DeKalb County School System, Decatur, Georgia and has been presenting to adult audiences for more than 25 years. During her 30-year career with the school district, she has been a classroom teacher, reading specialist, language arts coordinator, and staff development executive director. She received the Distinguished Staff Development Award for the State of Georgia, and her department was chosen to receive the Exemplary Program Award for the state.

Marcia is currently an educational consultant and has taught more than 400,000 administrators, teachers, parents, and business and community leaders throughout the world. We regard the U.S. as a land of migrants, but Lazarus’ lofty words emblazed within Lady Liberty fall short of the realities people have encountered when making America their home. The Immigration Act of 1924 was the initial blueprint for immigration law. Since then, the Immigration Reform Act of 1965 abolished the quota system. The Immigration Reform and Control Act of 1986 granted amnesty to those living in the U.S. before 1982 and imposed criminal penalties on those hiring undocumented immigrants. Today, immigration is a hotly debated issue. Presidents Clinton, George W. Bush, and Obama have been stymied in their efforts to pass comprehensive immigration legislation. During the 2012 presidential campaign, the candidates took radically different positions on immigration. Gridlock in Washington and heightened awareness have prompted states (and even some local communities) to carve out solutions outside of national legislation. This collection of papers explores all facets of the immigration debate and presents them in a point-counterpoint format. The book is divided into three sections (political, economic, and cultural), and each section is further divided into two or three subsections. There are roughly 10 papers per section (33 total). Each paper begins with a brief introduction that frames the issue, followed by more detailed point and counterpoint essays. An appendix contains major immigration legislation, starting with the Immigration Act of 1924, as well as testimonies and hearings and speeches. The volume briefly touches on peripheral issues, such as Americans living abroad and the attitude toward those assumed to be migrants. However, this work only addresses legislation rather than delving into societal-personal discussions. Julie Robitaille is committed to the writing life. She received a B.A. in English from Emory University, an M.A. in English literature from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and an M.A. in creative writing from the University of Florida. For twenty years, she directed the Writing Lab at Santa Fe Community College in Gainesville, Florida, and she now teaches writing full time.

After receiving his B.A. from the University of Florida, Bob Connelly spent time living and studying in northern Europe and then attended the University of Chicago, where he received an M.A. in English literature. About the Author
Luis Nazario is Assistant Chair of the English Department at Pueblo Community College, where he has taught developmental and college-level courses since 1990. Professor Nazario completed his BA at Inter American University in Puerto Rico and his MA at New York University. Together with text coauthor Deborah Borchers, Nazario has presented work on service learning at conferences and later worked on modules for developmental English to be used in the Department of Corrections. In addition, he has developed Internet courses in both developmental and college-level courses, designed college-level hybrid courses, and restructured his course to be taught as a learning community. In 2011, Professor Nazario received the Jerry Wartgow Teaching with Technology Award from the Colorado Community College System.

Debbie Borchers is Chair of the English Department at Pueblo Community College, where she is in her twenty-fifth year as a member of the faculty. Professor Borchers began her teaching career as a student of Near Eastern culture in Cairo. After returning to the United States, Professor Borchers earned her MA in TESL from the University of Arizona. Together with Luis Nazario, Borchers has implemented innovative service learning programs, student and faculty assessments, and standards for the English curriculum. She also has developed an online Introduction to Literature course and has presented workshops on Writing Across the Curriculum and developmental education.

Bill Lewis graduated from the University of Colorado and subsequently pursued his interest in the Russian language at the Defense Language Institute, which led to a 14-year career in the intelligence community. After earning his MA in English from George Mason University, he began his association with the English department at Pueblo Community College, where he has taught developmental and college-level English composition, technical writing, and literature courses for the past 18 years. He has also served as the college's Director of Planning, Accreditation, and Effectiveness, and is currently serving his division as Assessment of Student Learning Coordinator.
