Clear and concise -- great tips for writing in college

After looking at ten different writing texts, this one stands out as being so clear and to the point that almost anyone can understand how to craft a good, five paragraph, standard college theme. The student examples perfectly illustrate the priniples. The section on research is good. The section on punctuation and expression could be more detailed and use less jargon, but all in all, this is a user-friendly and worthwhile guide.

I have no hesitation in recommending this book as a preferred course text at post-graduate level or for in-house training.  It’s far superior to anything else on the market and sits nicely between Andres (2012) and Marsden and Wright (2010).  Whereas some  books tend to be more academic (and sometimes based on limited, if any, serious experience of actually doing surveys) this book is written by people who do surveys for a living, one of them for forty years. With its combination of accumulated wisdom and narrative skill, it’s easy (and fulfilling) to read, and you can barely see the joins. It has been written by very experienced fellow professionals used to dealing with operational practicalities, spiced with (just enough, but not too much) theory and thankfully few equations (formulae are immediately off-putting for students in sociology and similar areas). About the Author

Johnny Blair is an independent consultant. Previously, he was a principal scientist and senior survey methodologist at Abt Associates Inc., where he directed the Cognitive Testing Laboratory. He has conducted research on sampling rare populations, measurement error in proxy reporting, and cognitive interviewing for pretesting survey instruments. He is a member of the Design and Analysis Committee, which provides statistical advice for the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP), often referred to as The Nation’s Report Card. He has served on National Research Council panels to assess major government-sponsored surveys. His research publications include many book chapters, and over 50 articles in academic journals and in the Proceedings of the Joint Statistical Meetings of the American Statistical Association Section on Survey Methods. He served two terms on the editorial board of Public Opinion Quarterly and is a frequent peer reviewer for several other research journals. 

 



Ronald Czaja, associate professor (retired) of sociology and anthropology at North Carolina State University, taught courses in both undergraduate and graduate research methodology and medical sociology. His methodological research interests focus on sampling rare populations, response effects in surveys, and the cognitive aspects of questionnaire design. From 1969 to 1990 he was at the Survey Research Laboratory, University of Illinois at Chicago, as project coordinator, co-head of sampling, assistant director, and principal investigator.



Edward Blair is the Michael J. Cemo professor of marketing and entrepreneurship and chair of the Department of Marketing and Entrepreneurship in the Bauer College of Business at the University of Houston. He has been chair of the American Statistical Association Committee on Energy Statistics, which advises the U.S. Energy Information Administration on statistical matters, and previously served on the U.S. Census Bureau Advisory Committee. He has been a National Science Foundation panelist, national conference chair for the American Marketing Association, editorial board member for Journal of Marketing Research, Journal of the Academy of Marketing Science, and Journal of Business Research, and instructor in sampling and survey methods for the American Marketing Association School of Marketing Research. His research interests include survey sampling and cognitive aspects of survey methodology.

About the Author

David C. Wiley, PhD, MCHES, is a professor of health education and health education graduate coordinator at Texas State University in San Marcos, Texas. He is a lifelong health educator who has focused his professional career on addressing health issues of adolescents. He was the lead author on comprehensive studies on the status of sex education in Texas (Just Say Don’t kNOw: The Status of Sex Education in Texas Public Schools) and South Carolina public schools (A Sterling Opportunity: 25 Years After the Comprehensive Health Education Act), respectively.

Dr. Wiley is the past-president of ASHA and TSHA. He currently serves on the board of directors for CommuniCare, Inc. of San Antonio, Texas, a Federally Qualified Health Center, and in 2008 founded the Texas Campaign to Prevent Teen Pregnancy. The Texas Campaign is the only organization in Texas that addresses teen pregnancy prevention at a statewide level. He is also a former school board member for the Hays Consolidated Independent School District in Kyle, Texas.



Amy C. Cory, PhD, RN, is an assistant professor of nursing at Valparaiso University. Her area of expertise is in maternal child health with specialization in school health. Currently she serves as a child care health consultant in early care and education settings and as a school health consultant on several coordinated school health advisory councils. Dr. Cory has experience as a school nurse and as a pediatric nurse practitioner in school-based health centers.

Dr. Cory is editor of Staff Health in Caring for Our Children: National Health and Safety Performance Standards: Guidelines for Out-of-Home Child Care (3rd ed.). She has several published chapters and encyclopedic entries, most recently The Student’s Family in School Nursing: A Comprehensive Textbook as well as “Exercise Promotion and Fitness” and “Sexually Transmitted Diseases and the Family” in the Encyclopedia of Family Health.

Dr. Cory is an active member of Sigma Theta Tau, National Association of Pediatric Nurse Practitioners, American School Health Association, and American Public Health Association. For the American School Health Association, Dr. Cory serves on the board of directors as well as the advocacy and finance committees. For the American Public Health Association, she serves as the secretary for the School Health Education and Services section and represents the section on the Action Board. Dr. Cory has also served as a member of the board of directors at the Valparaiso Family YMCA where she chaired the Child Care Task Force. Her research interests are in community-based participatory action research in health in underdeveloped, developing, and developed countries.

Because there are so many health related wording and meanings, the authors of this book keep the text in simple terms that I could relate and understand. I especially appreciate the resources at the end of each chapter to enhance and explore even more areas of school health related issues. I am glad I purchased this book and not rent it for my studies!

About the Author
Dolores Burton is a Fulbright scholar and professor and chair of teacher education at New York Institute of Technology. She was a public school teacher, school district administrator, and author of instructional software. Dr. Burton designed, delivered, and supervised professional development for teachers in grades k-12 in mathematics, literacy, science, differentiated instruction, action research, instructional technology and inclusive practices. She has organized symposia for educators on research based strategies to close the achievement gap of the traditionally underserved populations; African American males, English Language Learners, students with special needs, and others at-risk for academic failure. Her research interests include Response to Intervention, teacher preparation, (elementary through college), Common Core standards, professional development, using data to drive instruction, and the use of technology to teach all students especially those who have traditionally been underserved. She has published in numerous journals and consulted regionally, nationally, and internationally.

Excellent resource for teachers, administrators, and parents

As a superintendent of schools for over 20 years in a large multi-ethnic community, I constantly needed strategies that would work and that would win the support of our teachers an the community. This book is one that really works. It presents a comprehensive account of the RTI process - lt provides the basic points that a professional or a parent needs to know as they introduce the program to their school. It gives clear descriptions of academic and behavioral interventions that are appropriate and easy to implement. I particularly liked the short scenarios that begin each chapter. Each one gives the reader a picture of an actual problem that teachers may encounter and shows how RTI can help to alleviate the difficulty. But the authors come across as more than ivory tower academics. They have clearly "walked the walk" in introducing RTI to the schools they describe. They know how to avoid the pitfalls of implementing a program in an actual school setting and what it takes to bring both the teachers and parents on board. They know how to move an RTI program from design to success Any teacher, and school administrator any parent, wild benefit from reading this book.

Great Resource

This is a perfect book for introducing RTI to both teachers and parents. It also goes into unusual detail about how to use progress monitoring to measure a student’s growth or regression. I would recommend this book to any practicing teacher or anyone thinking about becoming a teacher. But what gives this book its greatest advantage over the others I’ve seen is its focus on the role that parents need to play in an effective RTI program. This is the only RTI study I’ve seen that recognizes that education is not an exclusively a school-based process: it requires the expertise of everyone who interacts with the child, especially the parents. I do agree with the earlier comment that a DVD containing classroom illustrations and/or supporting materials would be a big asset to this outstanding book.

About the Author
Jay Parini is a poet, novelist, and biographer. He is Axinn Professor of English at Middlebury College in Vermont. Among his books are THE LAST STATION (Holt, 1990), BENJAMIN'S CROSSING (Holt, 1997), THE ART OF SUBTRACTION: NEW AND SELECTED POEMS (Braziller, 2005), and WHY POETRY MATTERS (Yale, 2008). He has written biographies of John Steinbeck, Robert Frost, and William Faulkner. He has edited numerous books, including THE OXFORD ENCYCLOPEDIA OF AMERICAN LITERATURE (Oxford, 2004) and THE WADSWORTH ANTHOLOGY OF POETRY (Wadsworth, 2006).

the best anthology

The Norton or the Wadsworth: that is the question. Actually, it's not a question at all - the Wadsworth is the better choice by far. For many years now the Norton has been the major poetry anthology in many colleges and universities throughout the country, as ubiquitous as Wal-Mart and Wendy's. No doubt it has certain virtues, but its numerous vices, I think, tip the scales in the opposite direction. Basically, the Norton is just a chronological roster of famous poets and famous blurbs, a who's who directory rather than a real textbook; it treats individual artists separately, as if they wrote in total isolation of each other. A few pages on Milton, a few pages on Wordsworth, but it doesn't say (or show) how, for example, the former influenced the latter.

The Wadsworth Anthology of Poetry (ed., Jay Parini) is a different matter altogether, totally worth its small wad of cash. Instead of enumerating poets simply because they happen to be famous, the Wadsworth focuses on the relationships between various texts and the continuity of poetic traditions. Parini takes us on a wild ride through the history of the elegy, the sonnet, blank verse - you name it. Texts talk to each other, chatter, argue, scream. Each and every section is prefaced by an informative and easy to understand introduction, so that the whole book makes a wonderful teaching tool for intro level English courses; it is also an indispensable companion for every serious poet. Footnotes are clear, concise, and kept to a minimum. My personal favorite is the last section, "Poets in Dialogue", where you can read, for example, Andrew Marvell's "Picture of Little T.C. in a Prospect of Flowers" together with Ashbery's "Picture of Little J.A. in a Prospect of Flowers." Awesome!

The CD is also a small treasure. It includes short biographical sketches, some great video from slam poetry contests, and mp3s of poets reading their own poems (Yeats, Heaney, Frost, Williams, etc.)

Definitely the best anthology out there.

Seeing Poetry Steadily and Seeing It Whole

Parini's anthology is a teaching book and should turn silent classroom hours into moments quick with thought and interest. Unlike so many anthologies broken by the constraints of time periods, this book is organized along lines of influence. As a result students can trace the evolution or non-evolution of form and techinique, for example, the sonnet and free verse. The possibilities of lively jutapositions should make classes hum. Additionally, the selections are right up to date. For example Heaney's fine BEOWULF appears. Introductions to the sections are concise and bright. In short this is a book that students and teachers will enjoy and from which both will learn.

Fresh, Marvelous, and Vibrant

The Wadsworth Anthology of Poetry is a fresh, marvelous, vibrant anthology which has particular value as a college text for general introductory literature courses or a more specialized class devoted to poetry. Because the book organizes poetry into three sections that include: form (ranging from elegies and odes to narratives and stanzas), theme (ranging from family and love to war and nature) and context (alliterative, meditative, and dialogue), the reader is encouraged to see the poetry from a variety of perspectives. Moreover, in the introductions to each section, poetry from other sections is cited, demonstrating how the anthology works to free the poems instead of confine them within strict interpretation. There are valuable juxtapositions too such as Thomas Hardy's "Snowfall" which follows Ralph Waldo Emerson's "The Snow Storm," allowing any one subject multiplicity. The variety and scope of the poetry, the largesse of the anthology, in turn, allows a teacher many possibilities within a pedagogical approach.

About the Author

Steven Katz is a director with the research and evaluation firm Aporia Consulting Ltd. and a permanent faculty member in Human Development and Applied Psychology at the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education (OISE) of the University of Toronto. He is an associate member of the School of Graduate Studies and is the coordinator of the Psychology of Learning and Development initial teacher education program component.

Katz has a doctorate in human development and applied psychology, with a specialization in applied cognitive science. His areas of expertise include cognition and learning, teacher education, networked learning communities, and the design of data-driven systems for organizational accountability, planning, and improvement. He has received the Governor General's medal for excellence in his field, and has been involved in research and evaluation, professional development, and consulting with a host of educational organizations around the world.



Lisa Ain Dack is a senior associate at Aporia Consulting Ltd. and an instructor of Developmental and Educational Psychology in the Initial Teacher Education program throughout the University of Toronto. Lisa has a doctorate in Developmental Psychology and Education from the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education of the University of Toronto (OISE/UT), with a collaborative degree in Developmental Science. Lisa leads many research projects investigating within-school professional learning communities and cross-school networked learning communities, and has been involved in research projects on assessment and evaluation. She also undertakes program evaluations at both the primary and secondary levels. In addition, Lisa leads workshops for administrators and teachers throughout Ontario on within-school professional learning communities and cross-school networked learning communities, as well as on data-driven decision making.
