About the Author
Carolyn Chapman is an international educational consultant, author, and teacher who has taught in kindergarten to college classrooms. Her interactive, hands-on professional development training sessions challenge educators to use strategies that ensure success for learners of all ages. Chapman has written many books about differentiated instruction, multiple intelligences, multiple assessments, and the brain-compatible classroom. She is coauthor with Gayle Gregory of the landmark Corwin Press book Differentiated Instructional Strategies: One Size Doesn't Fit All.

Rita King has more than 20 years of teacher training experience and administrative experience as principal and director of Middle Tennessee State University's teacher training program in the laboratory school. Most recently, she was an adjunct professor in the Department of Educational Leadership at the university. She now consults internationally in the areas of multiple intelligences, practical applications of brain-based research, differentiated learning, reading and writing strategies, mathematics instruction, creating effective learning environments, and strategies for test success. She is the coauthor of Differentiated Instructional Strategies for Reading in the Content Areas, Differentiated Instructional Strategies for Writing in the Content Areas, and Differentiated Assessment Strategies: One Tool Doesn't Fit All.

Changing view on assessment

this book really worked to broaden my definition, view and understanding of assessment. as with another book by this author, the information did become repetitive, but remained helpful. I really enjoyed the variety of examples on how to formally and informally incorporate assessment in the classroom.

Great book - I recommend it!

This book covers many different types of assessment and tools that are comprehensive and useful in the classroom. The authors do a great job of breaking it down for the reader in an easy to follow way. They argue that assessment drives instruction, but that isn't a bad thing. From pre-assessing to informal assessments like thumbs up, cards, posters or group work that allows verbal assessment, there really is no limit to the creative ways the authors have compiled ways to assess what students know. My favorite part of the book was when the authors discuss assessing through student's talents and interests, knowing that when we get to act as experts, we learn better. This translates into comprehensive ideas and innovative ways to reach into a child's understanding to create assessment tools that get to the heart of the matter : learning.

Exciting journal entries are broken down so the reader can easily understand the how and why. Portfolios are made simple, and exciting. This book is wonderful for helping spark creative assessment thinking, as well as aiding in creating lessons from the assessment down. I never knew there were so many ways to creatively get accurate assessment data.

I would absolutely recommend this book to teachers, substitutes, student teachers... anyone who wants a little flavor in their classroom, a little variety, or anyone who feels like they are in an assessment rut. You won't be in a rut by the time you finish this book. And the ideas that you will get from the tools found in this book are priceless!
