I actually wanted the spiral so I could carry it around, but I accidentally bought the hardcover. Nevertheless, this is an excellent guide for English majors. It's also great for college students in general since it helps with writing papers, research, and a whole lot more.

Anthony Mancuso is a corporations and limited liability company expert. He graduated from Hastings College of Law in San Francisco, is a member of the California State Bar, writes books and software in the fields of corporate and LLC law, and studies advanced business taxation at Golden Gate University in San Francisco. He has also been a consultant for Silicon Valley EDA (Electronic Design Automation) companies, most recently working on a C++ open-source integrated circuit database project team. He is the author of several Nolo books on forming and operating corporations (both profit and nonprofit) and limited liability companies. His titles include Incorporate Your Business, How to Form a Nonprofit Corporation (national and California editions), Form Your Own Limited Liability Company, The Corporate Records Handbook, and LLC or Corporation?. He wrote and programmed Nolo's LLC Maker and Incorporator Pro software programs, which generate state-by-state articles and other forms for organizing corporations and LLCs. Can't imagine many people need this book.

Generally I have to say I was a little disappointed with this book. To be fair it lives up to its claims that it will basically help you run LLC meetings and provides forms for most basic LLC functions EXCEPT creating one. It provides no business advice and no tax advice to help with serious beginning operation issues. I was hoping for a book that would offer advice and successful strategies for managing money in the LLC and discuss tax strategies and so on. Advice, that would help me operate an LLC with the legal documents to back up the advice. That is not what this book contains.
This book will not teach you how to begin running your own LLC business. But if you are an LLC member with two other members in your LLC it will tell you to use form 7 to formally announce the meetings and form 8 to guarantee that the announcement has been received and 9 to proactively declare that the meeting contents will be....
This book will not help you make tough decisions but it will tell you what to do if you have already made a decision. If that's really all that you want you have found your book.
What strikes me as odd is that the two most important documents as stated at the start of the book, the operating agreement and articles of organization, are not included in this book. For that topic they have written a whole SEPARATE BOOK for you to buy and they kindly point you in that direction.
My general feeling is that this 50-dollar book is too pricey for what it offers. They should drop the tear-out pages, that no one will ever use since the forms are on the CD, and the one or two pages for each states specific LLC rules, which could easily also be on the CD since you most likely only need the paragraph that pertains to your state, that make up HALF the content of the book and lower the price to 20.

Every LLC Owner Needs This Book

You file the LLC, pay the annual fee to the state and you're done right?

That's why I and I'm sure many other LLC owners thought until a lawyer friend was doing a review of my business one day and started asking me if I was keeping up with the necessary documentation--such as doing promissory notes for the loans I made to the business and resolutions for this and that. "Um, what?" pretty much sums up my response.

Nobody collects these forms from us but they're mighty good to have on hand if someone ever tries to contest your LLC protection, and they're often required by certain programs such as WBENC certification anyway.

She recommended this book which explains the various forms and when they should be used and even gives you a CD with them so you don't even have to type them in yourself. So it basically takes 5 minutes whenever you need to do one.

I'm not going to pretend that this book will keep you breathless on the edge of your seat all night--but it could certainly help prevent future sleepless nights if misfortune comes to call.

A thorough guide and templates for a full-blown LLC

I have a LLC which has only one member (myself). It is not a complex operation, and I was able to figure out everything from online resources.

This guidebook is GREAT for someone who has a medium sized LLC beyond one member. Forms and templates for almost any business need are included. Unfortunately for me the vast majority of those forms and instructions are for things that I'll never need.

Also, there are specifics that vary by state for LLC; this book is doesn't pertain to any one state, so you will still need to do additional research on operating your LLC within your state.

In summary, if you just need the LLC to protect assets and you are the only member, you probably don't need this book. But if you have a medium to large LLC with employees, meetings, etc, this guidebook and template (with CD-ROM containing templates), this is a great "operating manual".

All I need to make the change

All I needed to change my name in California was in this book, all my questions were answered and it's even a fun book to read. Well written and informative, my name change proceeding went smooth and easy. If only they would stop hiking up the price to change your name. Geez!!! Just make sure you always buy the latest edition of the book incase any laws change. But definitely buy this book if you're going to change your name.

Having used NOLO PRESS books over the years, this one is no different. It is a great help, and great for the lay person who wants to legally change their name. I highly recommend it. It is easy to read and understand. You do not need to hire an attorney. Get this book, read it, follow it, and do it yourself! Highly recommend! The price is more than worth it! (Call the County Clerk in your county to ask how long the process takes, just so you know, especially if you have any time problems, such as upcoming marriage, etc.).

Pretty good, needs some updating

This guide was used by my wife to change her name. The book overall is quite useful, however there are some challenges and I will attempt to delineate them below.

Pros:
- Gives a decent step by step process for you to navigate through the requirements to change your name in CA.
- Shows the forms and sites necessary.
- Attempts to let you know what to expect.

Cons:
- Several areas are vague. Not sure if this is due to differences in various counties, or what, however there are areas, such as dealing with the newspaper requirements, dealing with the clerks that could use some further detail to be completely helpful.
- Attempts to capture all possibilities, yet falls a bit short overall. Obviously not every situation will apply to every person, yet this book makes it challenging to determine which situations apply to your specific case and which do not.

Overall this was a heplful tool, certainly not perfect, contains some challenges to overcome. I suppose the bottom line is could we have done without the book? I think the answer is 'probably' in our specific case.

About the Author
John N. Gardner brings unparalleled experience to this writing partnership for American higher education's authoritative text for first-year seminar courses. He is the recipient of his institution's highest award for teaching excellence. He has 25 years of experience directing and teaching in the most respected and widely emulated first-year seminar in the U.S., the University 101 course at the University of South Carolina. Gardner is universally recognized as one of the country's leading higher educators for his role in initiating and orchestrating an international reform movement to improve the beginning college experience, a concept he coined as "the first-year experience." He is the founding executive director of two very influential higher education centers which support campuses in their efforts to improve the learning and retention of beginning college students: the National Resource Center for The First-Year Experience and Students in Transition at the University of South Carolina (www.sc.edu/fye), and the Policy Center on the First Year of College in Brevard, N.C. Jerome Jewler is a best-selling author, educator, and friend to students. A distinguished professor emeritus of the College of Mass Communications and Information Studies as well as codirector of the University 101 first-year seminar at the University of South Carolina, Columbia, Jewler has guided advertising students through the creative and writing processes and has helped hundreds of new students determine their goals. As University 101 codirector, he planned and conducted training workshops for first-year seminar instructors, won a Mortar Board award for teaching excellence, and was recognized as USC advisor of the year and as the Distinguished Advertising Educator nationally in 2000.

Betsy O. Barefoot is a writer, researcher, and teacher whose special area of scholarship is the first-year seminar. During her tenure at USC from 1988 to 1999, she served as codirector for research and publications at the National Resource Center for The First-Year Experience and Students in Transition. She also taught University 101 and graduate courses on the first-year experience and the principles of college teaching. She conducts first-year seminar faculty training workshops around the world and is frequently called on to evaluate first-year seminar outcomes. Betsy is codirector and senior scholar in the Policy Center on the First Year of College in Brevard, North Carolina, where she led a major national research project to identify "institutions of excellence" in the first college year.

She specializes in family law, including adoption, parentage issues, domestic partnership formation and dissolution, and divorce. i bought this because my girlfriend and i are thinking of purchasing some land together with friends. not only did it answer my questions, but it really got me thinking about how to share even more stuff. the authors seem to be incredibly knowledgeable about this subject, and i appreciate that there are some lawyers out there who care about the world. like they said, it's not just a financial benefit, but it also creates community.

I have always been interested in learning more about Cohousing. It's a growing movement that started in Europe. I have a few friends who have been discussing this as a possibility in our older years and I have never really understood the legalities. The sharing solution made it all clear.

The Sharing solution is a new book by Nolo Press that about....yes, Sharing. It's not just about Cohousing, it goes over many different ways you can share including household goods, sharing food, sharing child/pet care, sharing transportation & sharing at work. It gives detailed information about how to find sharing partners and what questions to ask and because of course it's a Nolo book, gives forms you can use in your sharing adventures.

This is such a timely book, and gives so many ideas on ways to share and save money. Another great Nolo book.

This Old Dog Learned Some New Tricks

I don't expect to embrace sharing as an entirely new way of life, but this book helped me see many new ways I can share more than I do now. It's causing me to think and consider how I can help myself, help others, and help the planet. The book gives me the tools I will need to forge new relationships that will endure and surmount the inevitable messiness of human interactions. Well researched and very readable. All in all, I think this book is a fresh breeze!
