About the Author
Lynn A. Sandstedt is a native of Colorado and a Ph.D. graduate in Spanish Language and Literature from the University of Colorado, Boulder. He taught at the University of Northern Colorado for 22 years and served as Chairman of the Foreign Language Department and the Department of Hispanic Studies. He was elected to serve on ACTFL Executive and later was elected to serve as president. He was elected president of the AATSP and several years later was selected to be the executive director. Sandstedt has received several prestigious awards for his work in Foreign Language Education.

Ralph Kite earned a Ph.D. in Ibero-American Studies from the University of New Mexico. He spent several years organizing and directing Peace Corps language training programs at New Mexico and the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. He continued to pursue interests in different teaching and learning approaches (film, computers, and theater) at the University of Colorado-Boulder, where he served as chair for 10 years.

Good Price, Prompt Arrival

It arrived on time and in good condition. The book does a great recap of beginning Spanish and covers some aspects of articles and adjectives that are very useful. I like that large parts are not dedicated to learning very specific vocabulary about sports, parts of the automobile, or computers etc.... At my current level (~B2), I find that the best words are those that can start and make an interesting conversation . The book does not overburden you with vocabulary or peripheral cultural facts about various peoples of the spanish-speaking world. The audio CD is helpful-- I just wish people spoke in a single Mexican accent. Adding Argentinian, Castillian, Puerto Rican etc.. makes it confusing.

About the Author

Robyn Blakeman (M.L.A. Southern Methodist University; B.A. University of Nebraska) is an Associate Professor at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. Professor Blakeman began teaching advertising and graphic design in 1987, first with the Art Institutes and then as an Assistant Professor of Advertising teaching both graphic and computer design at Southern Methodist University. As an Assistant Professor of Advertising at West Virginia University she developed the creative track in layout and design and was responsible for designing and developing the first Online Integrated Marketing Communication Graduate program in the country. At UTK, she teaches Advertising & Public Relations Design and Advertising Creative Strategy.

About the Author

Faye Z. Belgrave (Ph.D., University of Maryland) is Professor of Psychology at Virginia Commonwealth University and founder and director of the Center for Cultural Experiences in Prevention. Her programmatic and research interests are in the areas of HIV and substance abuse prevention. Her research focuses on the role of culture and context in preventive interventions and on issues of gender and women. Dr. Belgrave has published extensively and is an invited speaker on these topics. In collaboration with community partners, she has implemented several prevention programs targeting African American adolescents, women, and young adults. These programs have been beneficial in increasing cultural attributes and in preventing and/or decreasing drug use and associated negative behaviors. Dr. Belgrave serves as an expert advisor on several national committees and agencies including the American Psychological Association, the National Institute of Drug Abuse, the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Agency, and the Center for Substance Abuse Prevention. She is the recipient of many national awards for her work with African American populations including the Association of Black Psychologists Distinguished Psychologists Award and the American Psychological Association Minority Fellowship Program Dalmas Taylor Award for a distinguished career in psychology.

Kevin W. Allison is Senior Assistant to the President of Virginia Commonwealth University and a Professor in the Department of Psychology and the Wilder School of Government and Public Affairs. He completed his undergraduate degree in psychology at the University of Notre Dame and his graduate work in clinical-community psychology at DePaul University in Chicago. Prior to joining the VCU faculty, Dr. Allison worked at Pennsylvania State University and served as the Clincal Director of City Lights in Washington, DC. Dr. Allison's work has focused on understanding and addressing processes that support positive developmental outcomes for African American children and youth. This has included the examination of life skills and culturally informed interventions for youth and work with community-based human services providers.

I needed this book for school. I saved money by renting from this seller. The book gives you great information on the history of black psychology and it's founders. Additionally, it breaks down the important factors and different perspectives that contribute to black psychology.

About the Author
Lee Bauknight is an instructor at Louisiana State University, where he teaches courses primarily in the University Writing Program. Lee completed his MFA in fiction at the University of South Carolina in 2002 and was associate director of the First-Year English Program there for five years and director of the Writing Center for one. As associate director, Lee helped redesign the first-year English curriculum with a focus on analysis and argumentation and helped train, mentor, and evaluate instructors and graduate teaching assistants. He also designed and edited five editions of THE CAROLINA READER, one of the textbooks used in the FYE Program. Before pursuing his MFA, he worked for more than a decade as an editor at newspapers in South Carolina and Georgia.

Brooke Rollins, an Assistant Professor of Rhetoric and a member of the graduate faculty at Louisiana State University, teaches courses in rhetoric, composition studies, writing, and critical theory. She received her Ph.D. in English, with a focus on rhetoric and composition studies, at the University of South Carolina in 2007. While at South Carolina, she served as an Assistant Director of the First-Year English Program and taught courses in composition, advanced composition, business writing, and rhetoric. Her work has appeared in COLLEGE ENGLISH, RHETORICA SOCIETY QUARTERLY, and THE VELVET LIGHT TRAP. She is currently working on a book called GHOSTWRITING ETHOS: BEYOND CHARACCTER AND CHARACTER BEYOND, which explores the classical rhetorical concept of ethos in Plato, Aristotle, Lysias, and Isocrates.

Not Really A "Book"

Pros: Cheap, short and an easy read.

Overall:
This book helped me in class, which is the primary reason for getting it IMO. However, it is not worth the price that anyone asks for it. Only about half (if even that amount) of the book is actual text from the author(s), the rest is FREE articles used for analytical thinking. Yes free as in: already out there on various publications and the internet free. Why am I paying for a book that is virtually just articles slapped together by someone without any real work being done? I don't know. If you need this book for class, get it as cheaply as possible, because it will still be a waste of money. If you don't abosolutely need it, don't ever buy it.

GOOD STORY...BAD WRITING....BAD EDITING...

This is a book that on its face held a lot of promise. Any story in which a mother and her children, as well as faithful family retainers, are unjustly imprisoned in squalid conditions for twenty years for an ostensible crime comitted by the familial patriarch would certainly be of interest. Wrong! This is a tepid and disappointing book, poorly written and, most certainly, poorly edited. It is so filled with contraditions and inconsistencies, as to create somewhat of a credibility gap for the reader.

The story revolves around the Oufkir family, who were, at one time, a prominent, highly respected, and well known Moroccan family. Their story is told by Malika Oufkir, who is the eldest daughter of the late General Oufkir, who was executed in August 1972, immediately following an aborted attempt to assassinate King Hassan II of Morocco, for whom he was the Minister of Defense. General's Oufkir's treasonous action was the catalyst for the tragic turn of events that were to engulf his family.

After the aborted coup, the General's immediate family was placed under house arrest and four months later, along with two loyal family retainers who volunteered to share their fate, were whisked away to the first of several desert prisons that were to house them for the next fifteen years.

As Malika tells it, hers was initially almost a fairy tale story. Brought up in luxurious surroundings, she suffered early heartbreak when, at the age of five, she was separated from her family and "adopted" by then King Muhammad V, so as to be a live in playmate for the King's daughter. This adoption is never really explained, and one has no idea what her parents' thoughts were on this issue. Malika lived in the Palace in the lap of luxury for many years. As a teenager, however, she moved back with her family, where, there too, she continued to live a very privileged life, steeped in luxury and money.

After the Oufkirs' circumstances changed, theirs is truly a tragic story. There is little doubt that the conditions in their desert prisons were deplorable and squalid. With inadequate sanitation, insufficient food, no medical care, or educational provisions, the family was truly living a life of privation. Cutoff from the outside world, as they were, they truly were disenfranchised.

Their escape from their last desert prison, an escape that brought their plight to the consciousness of the public, was amazing. But for their escape, there is no doubt in my mind that they would still be languishing in a desert prison today, barely alive, if not already dead. I salute their determination and ingenuity in making a deperate break for freedom.

The problem lies in the telling of the story, which is so poorly told. Many things are left unexplained. No effort is made to ground the events that led to their family's downfall in a historical context. Whatever Malika said seems to have been what went into the final draft of this book, even if she contradicted herself a page or two later, which is the main problem with the book. There are so many inconsistencies with what Malika herself says, that the discerning reader is left to question much of what she represents.

Malika comes across as a somewhat self-absorbed, vapid woman to whom fate dealt a harsh and unusually cruel hand. Her self-absorption is most evident in that she barely acknowledges the sacrifice of the two faithful family retainers, who voluntarily shared their fate, nor does she discuss the impact that this had on them. It is also a little disconcerting that more does not come through about the perceptions the other family members had about this hellish experience. Their insight might have provided a little more balance and interest to the narrative. In the hands of a good writer and and excellent editor, this book might have withstood scrutiny and met expectations.

Sorry, Oprah, your book club selections are usually excellent. This one fails to make the grade.

A Life of Imprisonment Ended by Courage and Resilience

Stolen Lives is a story of wealth, entitlement, courage, resilience, tragedy, and love. Malika Oufkir, who is of Moroccan descent, was born in 1953. She was adopted at the age of five by King Muhammad V. She was to be brought up with his daughter, Princess Amina, who was also five. When the King passed away, his son, Hassan II continued to raise the two girls. She lived in the palace for eleven years. While she lived in such rich surroundings, she was living her life as a prisoner because she rarely left the confines of the palace.

Oufkir could no longer stand being away from her family. As difficult as it was for the King, her adopted father, he allowed her to return to her family where she stayed for two years. When she first returned, she realized that she had missed so many years with her family and she had to become reacquainted with them.

Malika's father, General Muhammad Oufkir, was the second most important man in the kingdom. He tried to assassinate King Hassan II in 1972 and when the plot failed he was executed. Five bullets killed him. The King punished the entire family - Fatima Oufkir, Malika's mother, and her brothers and sisters, the youngest of which was only three years old. The family was sent to the desert, presumably to die. They remained in the Moroccan gaols for about fourteen years when four of the Oufkir children brilliantly escaped. With only a gold bracelet, their strength, determination, and humor, they were able to travel across their country and share their story of injustice and human suffering to the French media and their extended family. It was because of their drive that the rest of the family was rescued and they believed that they were free. However, they wouldn't be freed and granted asylum for close to nine more years.

This story is an encouraging tale of the human will. During the family's incarceration, Malika became her siblings' mother, confidante, and protector. Her wisdom was well beyond her years. She taught them table manners and how to read and communicate. They told her things that they couldn't share with their mother. Even though the siblings were separated into four cells, they developed a `system' which worked for them and maintained their sanity during the long years in which they were prisoners.

Stolen Lives gives an honest look at one woman's journey from being a palace prisoner to a desert prisoner and how she finally achieved freedom. It also shows how a woman was able to reconcile how her father's attempt to murder her adopted father resulted in his own death and her family's inhumane treatment. This is a human story of suffering and human rights violations. And throughout this harrowing journey Malika never lost sight of her identity as a Moroccan despite how her country seemingly turned its back on the Oufkir family.

A Worth-While Book

This German-language reader is ideal for students of postmodern literature. Staying true to current literary drifts and inclinations, this reader focuses upon the relative everyday experiences as well as the nuances that help to establish and shape a unique perspective on many of today's German-language writers and their works.

Great!

This is a great book for the German language student. It has various stories (including a modern day version of Little Red Riding Hood) which are excellent, accompanied by a small glossary of vocabulary terms, and grammar lessons. After each story, there are also some questions that the student can answer, to be sure of a complete understanding of what was just read. There is also a cassette that is made to accompany this book (which unfortunately I don't have, so I can't rate it) and some of the stories are strictly on this cassette and can't be found in the book. There are questions and vocabulary terms that correspond to these listening exercises which are in this book as well. I really enjoy this book and I believe other German students will as well.

Good book, with some drawbacks

This book is certainly not for beginners, it is very advanced. I use this in my 3rd year German class (I am a German professor and native speaker), and it is *a little* difficult for them.

Here are the reasons I like this book:

1. It is almost 100% in German. The only English in the book is the translations in the glossary.
2. This book uses text in real German literature.
3. It challenges the students.

However, this comes with some drawbacks. If the students aren't at the appropriate level, they will fall behind quickly. The difficulty of the text can also discourage students if they aren't advanced enough to understand it. Also, because this includes much real-life German literature, some of the expressions are outdated; would never be used in conversation in German speaking areas.

Luckily there are *many* chapters in the book, and you (if you are teaching a class) could skip some of the stories that might provide little benefit or too great of a challenge!

A MUST HAVE for any therapist worth their cultural salt!

I actually have the 2nd Edition of Freddy's book in my library on treating culturally diverse clients, and more recently added the 4th Edition. I got it when I was early in my nursing career. I appreciate how Freddy has taken the different cultures and broken them down into their individual chapters specific to their needs and practices. I have had books on cultural diversity in the past, but they were mostly a "mish-mash" of all cultures together in one chapter; the chapters being divided by topic and not group. I have a much easier time teaching staff, students, and myself when I can just go to that chapter and have all of the info I need in one place. Freddy has updated information to demonstrate current practices and cultural aspects that have evolved since the previous editions' times, so I am able to give others accurate and current information for their practice. He asks specific questions related to treatment of different cultures, such as: "What should a practitioner do during the first meeting with ______ vs _____ culture?"; "Would a practitioner treat an ___ with the same therapeutic approach as a ____?"; and "What are some examples of cross-cultural skills a practitioner should display to minimize biases when assessing clients from different multicultural groups?" (Pg ix). He takes into account such topics as socioeconomic influences on each culture, levels of acculturation, family structure and generational impact, and religious and spiritual influences (very helpful to me as I work on my dissertation!). Each chapter also offers specific suggestions and evidence-based guidelines for interacting with and establishing the therapeutic relationship with the particular group in therapy. Freddy has provided appendices of assessment tools and DSM diagnoses that are culturally biased and/or based, which is very helpful when teaching clinicians and caregivers how to correctly assess and treat clients, especially clients from a culture different from their own. I am fortunate to have an early and later edition of his book so that I can see how things have changed since the past in therapy. Thank you, Freddy, for a wonderful resource in my library, office, and classroom!

I absolutely love this book. It is an excellent resource that every counselor should have. It gives you a greater understanding about others' culture and even about your own, if in some ways one might now know sufficiently about one's culture. A must have!

About the Author
: Mary McVey Gill has co-authored numerous books in Spanish including EN CONTACTO: LECTURAS INTERMEDIAS, and HABLEMOS ESPAÑOL. She worked in academic publishing for many years and co-authored TAPESTRY II: LISTENING/SPEAKING, a book for English language learners.

Brenda Wegmann received a Master's degree in Spanish literature from the University of Wisconsin and taught Spanish for seven years at Boston University and Northeastern University before moving to Canada in 1974. Since then she has lived with her family in Edmonton while teaching Spanish at the University of Alberta in the Department of Extension and writing Spanish and ESL textbooks, as well as trade books. Among her publications (written in collaboration with outstanding co-authors) are the following: PERSPECTIVAS, EN CONTACTO (for intermediate university Spanish), MOSAIC 1 & 2 (ESL readers), PRONTO Y PRÁCTICO (Practical Spanish for Canadians), STREETWISE SPANISH DICTIONARY / THESAURUS, LAUGH N' LEARN SPANISH (co-authored with cartoonist Lynn Johnston of "For Better or For Worse"), TUNE UP YOUR SPANISH, and most recently, THE RED-HOT BOOK OF SPANISH SLANG AND IDIOMS.

Teresa Mendez-Faith was born in Asuncion, Paraguay. She received her PhD at the University of Michigan in 1979. She currently resides in New England. An essayist, literary critic and college professor, she teaches Hispanic-American literature at Saint Anselm College, New Hampshire. She has authored several books including Paraguay: Novela y Exilio (1985) and Nuevos contextos: Doce cuentistas contemporáneos de Hispanoamerica (2002), and is co-author of four Spanish textbooks. Teresa Mendez-Faith has been awarded several academic distinctions, including two postgraduate scholarships from the National for Endowment the Humanities, the AAUP "Teacher of the Year" prize at her college (1990) and, also that same year, the "Sears-Roebuck Foundation Teaching Excellence and Campus Leadership Award".

About the Author
Bruce Carruthers Ph.D. University of Chicago 1991. Areas of interest include historical and comparative sociology, economic sociology, sociology of law and sociology of organizations. Carruthers has written three books, City of Capital Politics and Markets in the English Financial Revolution (Princeton University, 1996), Rescuing Business: The Making of Corporate Bankruptcy Law in England and the United States (Oxford, 1998), and Economy/Society: Markets, Meanings and Social Structure (Pine Forge Press, 2000). His current research projects are on the evolution of credit decision-making as a problem in the sociology of trust, and worldwide changes in bankruptcy law in the era of a globalized world economy. He has had visiting fellowships at the Russell Sage Foundation and the Radcliffe Institute for Advanced Study, and received a John Simon Guggenheim Fellowship. He is methodologically agnostic, and does not believe that the qualitative/quantitative distinction is worth fighting over.

Sarah Babb is a Professor of Sociology at Boston College. She specializes in the areas of Economic Sociology, Latin America, Political Sociology, Comparative and Historical Sociology, Organizations and Globalization. Her most recent book is Managing Mexico: Economists from Nationalism to Neoliberalism.

This book tells a sad tale of someone who failed economics. The book Serbs half used as the third chapter on seemed eerily unopened. Great condition would but again except I never ever wanna see it again after class.
